China’s Hebei province bars people from leaving city after it became hotbed of recent

COVID-19 outbreak

The capital of northern China’s Hebei province has barred people from leaving the city after it became the hotbed of the recent COVID-19 outbreak. With Hebei reporting a total 310 COVID positive cases including 183 asymptomatic cases in the past week, capital Shijiazhuang accounted for most of it.

The worst-hit Gaocheng District in Shijiazhuang has been classified as a high-risk area for COVID-19 and another 17 areas in Shijiazhuang and Xingtai have been classified as medium-risk areas.

US President-elect Joe Biden names two Indian Americans in National Security Council of White House

In the United States, the President-elect Joe Biden has appointed two Indian-Americans to the National Security Council of the White House. Biden has named Indian-American Sumona Guha as senior director for South Asia and Tarun Chhabra as senior director for Technology and National Security.

Sumona Guha is currently serving as senior vice president at Albright Stonebridge Group. Tarun Chhabra, who has been appointed senior director for Technology and National Security, is a senior fellow at the Centre for Security and Emerging Technology at Georgetown University.

Biden has also named Shanthi Kalathil as Coordinator for Democracy and Human Rights in his National Security Council. She is currently senior director of the International Forum for Democratic Studies at the National Endowment for Democracy.

Japan Commits Rs 2,113 cr Loan Pact to India to Support COVID-19 Relief Efforts

A loan agreement was signed between India and Japan for JPY (Japanese yen) 30 billion (Rs 2,113 crore) to support India’s efforts at providing social assistance to the poor and

vulnerable households severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

It is named as Covid-19 Crisis Response Support Loan for Social Protection.

Lt. Gen. Konsam Himalay Singh Authored a Book Titled ‘Making of a General & A

Himalayan Echo’

Dr Najma Heptulla, Governor of Manipur released a book titled ‘Making of a General & A Himalayan Echo’ through a virtual mode at Durbar Hall of Raj Bhavan, Imphal, Manipur. The book is authored by (Redt) Lt. Gen. Konsam Himalay Singh and is published by Konark Publishers Pvt Ltd.

It is a memoir of Lt Gen (Dr) Konsam Himalay Singh who discovered his journey from a small village in Manipur to becoming the 1st Lieutenant general from North East India. He is also the first military officer from Manipur to reach the ranks of Brigadier and Major General.

Cornelius Mahoney ‘Neil’ Sheehan, an American journalist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author passed away at the age of 84 in Washington D.C., United States (US) due to complications from Parkinson’s disease.

He gained popularity when he obtained Pentagon Papers for New York Times and became the first to do so.

High Level Committee to commemorate 125th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose

A High Level Committee, headed by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been constituted to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in a befitting manner.

Union Culture Ministry has said that the High Level Committee will decide on the activities for a one year long commemoration, beginning 23rd January 2021.

The Members of the Committee include distinguished citizens, historians, authors, experts, family members of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, as well as eminent persons associated with Azad Hind Fauj.

The Committee will lend guidance to the commemoration activities in Delhi, Kolkata and other places associated with Netaji and Azad Hind Fauj, both in India as well as overseas.

DGCA issues guidelines for Airlines to transport COVID-19 vaccines

India's civil aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has issued guidelines to airlines and other aircraft operators for transportation of Covid-19 vaccines.

"All scheduled operators who have been currently authorized to carry dangerous goods may carry COVID19 vaccine packed in dry ice, meeting the regulatory requirements," DGCA said in a circular.

"Non-scheduled operators, including aircraft engaged in general aviation, that are required to participate in the carriage of COVID 19 vaccines packed in dry ice shall seek specific

approval before commencing such operations," it added.

As per DGCA directives, authorised airlines can carry vaccine in dry ice in passenger cabin or cargo cabin. Passengers won't be allowed on board if vaccines are being transported in the passenger cabin.

The Standing Committee of National Board of Wildlife (SC-NBWL) in its 60th meeting has approved the advisory for management of Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC) in the country to expedite effective inter-departmental coordinated actions.

The advisory envisages empowering gram panchayats in dealing with the problematic wild animals as per the section 11 (1) (b) of WildLife (Protection) Act, 1972.

EESL, NHAI sign MoU to Establish Clean & Energy Efficient Interventions at NHAI Establishments

Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish Clean &Energy Efficient Interventions at NHAI Establishments.

EESL will set up Solar Power Projects, energy efficient LED lighting and EV Charging stations at NHAI establishments.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Rajeev Sharma, Chairman, EESL &RK Pandey, Member-Projects, NHAI.

Union Minister for Earth Sciences, Harsh Vardhan launched Coastal Research Vehicle (CRV) ‘Sagar Anveshika’ at the Chennai Port. The vehicle will be used to carry out environment indexing and bathymetric (mapping underwater features) in both coastal and offshore waters. It will be used for research purposes by National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) and has been built by Titagarh Wagons, Kolkata, West Bengal.

Anveshika has been built under Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass) and is a DP (Dynamic Positioning)-Capable vessel.
