Remote access is the ability to

do business outside the office.

• Explore and demonstrate:

– VPN – Virtual Private Network – RWW – Remote Web Workplace – RDS – Remote Desktop Services – Citrix – XenApp

– VDI – Virtual Desktop Interface – XenDesktop

Remote control products allow you to take control of one computer from another computer remotely.

remote control such as:

The advantages of Remote

Control software include:

• Easy to use

• Easy to manage for the person initiating the connection

• Good for small offices without a network

• Good for small businesses connecting to many clients

• Allows remote printing and file transfer • Can be used with tablets

The disadvantages of Remote

Control software include:

• Security of the firm is bypassed creating a new attack surface for a hacker

• Requires installation of an agent

• May not work at all source locations

• If there is an issue with Host PC access is lost • Limited ability for IT to support

• Antivirus software may see the application as a threat • Remote user has access to entire computer

VPN software allows for a connection between one computer or network and another. The connection is basic and is oriented around carrying traffic.

A VPN is the simplest form of

remote access but its

implementation is complex.

• Cost-effective

• High level of security

• Applications can be prioritized over the link • Useful for connecting multiple offices

• Can be combined with other technologies

• May not be able to access target system from some locations (ex. Hotels)

• Multi-vendor technologies may not work well together • Difficult to troubleshoot connectivity issues

• Risk of transferring virus to the internal system

• May block access to local resources (ex. Printers, Browsing)

• High bandwidth utilization

• Does not support Mac computers or Tablets • Redirection of printing sometimes fails
