Hydration for senior citizens How to Prevent Dehydration - AgingCare.com Dehydration can be a serious risk for anyone but older adults are at a greater risk of dehydration. As temperatures raise so
does the risk of dehydration.
Why are we at a greater risk as we age?
• As we age and have health issues we are more susceptible to fluid and electrolyte imbalance
• Our body also has more difficulty conserving water
• Our sense of thirst diminishes
• Medical conditions affect our body’s ability to retain fluids
• Those with dementia my forget to eat or drink
• Medications can cause frequent urination and deplete water levels (diuretics, antihistamines, laxatives, antipsychotics and corticosteroids can put you at risk)
• Those with incontinence will refuse or limit fluid intake to avoid accidents
What are signs and symptoms of dehydration?
• Headache • Constipation • Muscle Cramps • Dry mouth • Dry tongue • Sleepiness • Lethargy
• Urine color very dark
Picking up on early symptoms can help to prevent severe dehydration. Urine should be clear or light yellow. Thirst is not always a good indicator because someone who is thirsty may already be dehydrated. Severe dehydration that goes un-checked can cause severe health consequences and can lead to shock, kidney failure, heat injury or even coma and death.
Signs and symptoms of severe dehydration
• Little or no urination
• Dark, amber colored urine
• Dry skin that stays folded when pinched
• Irritability, dizziness or confusion
• Low blood pressure
• Rapid breathing and heartbeat
• Weak pulse
• Cold hands and feet
Preventing Dehydration
For most, drinking plenty of fluids or eating food with a high water content is great. Drink 64 ounces of fluids per day and increase that when it is hot and humid (aka Northwest Ohio!)
• Flavored water
• Fruit infused water
• Popsicles
• Smoothies

Auxiliary and YOUR Generous Donations I remember when...by Charlie Lade
I remember when...before COVID-19 shut everything down... that everyday of the week from Monday through Friday I would go to the Senior Center and play pool with the friends. Some days I would go into the activity room and play cards with a number of people and that was fun. We all had a good time! Friendships were made and people would come into the room and talk. We would play that crazy game that of cards and have six people around the table! Then, I remember every day going to lunch and having a good time there too! We would see room being full of people who came to eat and to socialize. It was a fun time. A time of getting together! There were the days when they had special holidays and they had meals in the auditorium. I believe it was Christmas the last time and the gym was full of people and we had a good meal there! What a good time that was.
After Covid-19 closed the center, everyday I would take Benny, my dog, and walk around the senior center and stop by and see Sheri. I would tap on her window and she would come out and we could talk. I'm getting off the subject a little but the other thing that happened that was so special was the senior health fair. They had people from various organizations and nursing homes and hearing aid center and types of businesses. They'd have a big show and we'd get pick up all kinds of pens and little items and talk to the businesses. That was a fun time too!
I sure miss that. Those were the good times to remember and you probably have good times to remember about the senior center, too. Before Covid-19. I just thought I would give a little remembrance to the times before Covid-19. I am sure I am not the only one that can’t wait to get back to going into the Senior Center, hoping to see you all soon!!
