Lasok Law Library
• Law collections are shelved in the Lasok Law Library on level -1
Finding books in the Law Library
• The Law Library uses a different classification scheme to the rest of the Library
• Moys classification scheme is designed
specifically for law libraries and is based on Library of Congress
• All classmarks use letters (K, KA-KW) + numbers + author letters
• Journals, law reports and statutes are not

• KB General & comparative law
• KC International law
• KL Common law: general
• KM Public law
• KN Private law
• KV Law of European countries
Electronic books
• A number of law books are available online
• Search the library catalogue – e-books are marked Online version
• Click on the link in the catalogue entry to read online
• Halsbury’s Laws of England is available on Lexis – click on Commentary
• Click on Books on Westlaw for ebooks
Law journals
• All law journals or periodicals are shelved in
the Lasok Law Library at the start of the rolling shelves
• Exeter has online versions of most journals but also has print version of major titles
• All appear on catalogue as K 1, but are not labelled
Finding Law journals
• Use the orange folders to find where they are shelved – this only includes journals in the
Law Library so students should also check in the library catalogue
• The catalogue links to online versions
• Use lists of abbreviations in the folders or Cardiff Index to Legal Abbreviations
Electronic journals
• To find articles by subject or title you can use our electronic journals collections via the
Electronic Library but to find articles by subject use Law databases, especially:
• Lexis and Westlaw – these law databases include many major law journals
• HeinOnline (mainly US law journals but with many major UK and European titles)
• Main reference work is Halsbury’s Laws,
shelved at end of fixed shelves – also on Lexis
• Reprints of historic law reports – pre-1865 (English Reports and Revised Reports) are also shelved here
• All other series follow law journals on rolling shelves – for shelf locations see orange folders
• Most are online – see databases

• Main reference work is Halsbury’s Statutes, shelved at end of fixed shelves
• To find old legislation use chronological series
• All statutes (legislation) on Lexis & Westlaw
• Free source is legislation.gov.uk
Law databases – Lexis Library
• Lexis Library has the full text of UK case law, legislation and core journals published by
Butterworths
• You can search by subject, author or citation
• Access to full text in most cases
• You can also read reference works like Halsbury’s Laws of England
Law databases – Westlaw UK
• Westlaw UK has the full text of UK case law, legislation and core journals published by Sweet & Maxwell
• Indexes all UK law journals and has many in full text
• You can search by subject, author or citation
• You can also read many major reference works online
Law databases – JustCite
• JustCite is a legal referencing system which
links up with Lexis, Westlaw and wide range of other sites
• Quick way of finding law reports and legislation
• Links with Justis Statutes – only online collection of historic legislation
Law databases – Hein Online
• Hein Online is a US database which works on a similar principle to JSTOR
• Has complete archives of over 2,000 (mainly US) journals but generally doesn’t have the most recent issues
• All titles are linked to the catalogue and included in Journal Article Search
Free law databases
• No walk-in access to legal databases
• All UK legislation (statutes and SIs) in force on Legislation.gov.uk (free site – useful for visitors with no access to legal databases
• Large collection of free law reports on BAILII http://www.bailii.org/
• All EU law and official documents free on Eur- Lex http://eur-lex.europa.eu/en/index.htm

• Books on economics (with classmarks from 300-339) are on level -1 in the Forum Library

• To find a journal by title use Journal search on the catalogue – this shows if it is in print and links to electronic versions on Business Source Complete, JSTOR, etc.
• To find articles by subject or title use Business Source Complete or ABI/INFORM (via
ProQuest Business Collection)

• Use Article search on Library catalogue for a quick preliminary search of full text resources
• Results always show JSTOR first
• Click on EBSCO to find results in EBSCO journals & Business Source Complete
