About Covilhã
Located on the south-facing slope of the Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain range in mainland Portugal – the only place in the country with a ski resort – Covilhã has steep streets with unique characteristics, preserving aspects of historical architecture. At approximately six hundred metres above sea level, the town is around thirty minutes by car from the highest point of the mountain range, where wonderful walking routes and unspoilt countryside abound.
Known as the “Portuguese Manchester” due to its growth being associated to the woollen industry, the city has a vast and rich industrial heritage, often housing companies, museums and schools. UBI itself has refurbished several of these buildings to accommodate its various facilities.
Covilhã is a medium-sized town that owes much of its dynamics to the presence of UBI. It offers a high quality of life, together with safety and a significantly lower cost of living than in the large cities on the coast of Portugal. The population is diverse, in terms of age and cultural aspects.
Covilhã has a range of leisure establishments such as bars, restaurants, pubs and a shopping centre in the so-called “new town”. However, local commerce is still active, including the traditional fairs in the municipal market.
This region offers a wide cultural variety, from the built heritage to activities in the fields of music, theatre and other forms of art.

Courses are taught in Portuguese and are specified in the following table, also showing the curricular units taught in English. International students can also turn to lecturers – most of whom have skills in English – and bilingual students. Bibliographic material is provided above all in English. These advantages make the international student’s experience easier and more pleasant.
At UBI there are various associations or groups in which the student can become involved to make academic life more productive and enriching.
These are occasions for personal and collective development and an opportunity for another type of experience,
such as learning to coordinate, work in a team, manage and perform activities, form relations with a variety of bodies in society, or simply to show solidarity, expecting
nothing in return. Standing out among the associations are the UBI Academic Association (AAUBI), Former Students’ Association (AUBI), AIESEC in UBI and the Young People’s Association for Humanitarian Action (AJAS).
The Erasmus Student Network Covilhã (ESN Covilhã), a non-profit international student organization, has the mission to represent international students, thus provide opportunities for cultural understanding and self-development under the principle of Students Helping Students.
The students’ associations cover all degree courses at UBI and in the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences there are seven: UBINEEC (Economics Students’ Association), UBIGEST (Management Students’
Association), MKTUBI (Marketing Students’ Association), PSICUBI (Psychology Students’ Association), NE CPRI-UBI (Political Science and International Relations Students’ Association), CESUBI (Sociology Students’ Association) and DESPUBI (Sport Sciences Students’
Association).
