In addition, three elective credits must be in foreign or Native American languages, fine arts, or career and technical education courses.

Schedule Requirements

A. To be classified as a sophomore, students must have earned at least five (5) credits at the end of the freshman year.

B. To be classified as a junior, students must have earned at least ten (10) credits at the end of the sophomore year.

C. To be classified as a senior, students must have earned at least seventeen (17) credits at the end of the junior year.

Please note:

Sophomores and juniors must carry a minimum of six (6) hours of class each semester, of which two (2) can be a music performance class.

Seniors are required to carry a minimum of five (5) hours of classes each semester of which two (2) can be a music performance class.

Students can apply no more than one and one half (1½) credits of Weight Training toward the minimum graduation requirements.

Students can apply no more than two (2) credits of weight training and fitness/aerobics combined toward the minimum graduation requirements.

Students can apply only five (5) credits of music performance toward the minimum graduation requirements.

Students can apply only four (4) credits of journalism toward the minimum graduation requirements.

Students enrolled in any cooperative work program must carry six (6) hours -- sophomores and juniors -- or five (5) hours -- seniors -- of class work in addition to this course.

College Athletic Eligibility

Sports is big business, and outstanding athletes are often offered large scholarships. To ensure that all athletes are prepared for college level work, the NCAA and NAIA have strict eligibility requirements that athletes must meet before they can receive a scholarship or play a sport in college. It is important for athletes to meet with their guidance counselors as early as possible to discuss academic requirements and to make sure that they are taking the right courses. North Dakota University System (NDUS) Admission Requirements

Four credits of English

Three credits of mathematics, Algebra I and above Three credits of laboratory science

Three credits of social studies

The NDUS strongly recommends that high school students intending to enroll in four-year universities take Algebra II and two credits of a single classical or modern language. Many out of state colleges require two or more credits of the same language, a credit of fine arts, or other requirements. Check with college websites for specific college requirements.

North Dakota University System Admissions Policies – Student Placement Into College Courses

The following placement scores are required for admission to MATH 103 (College Algebra). An ACT mathematics sub-test score of 22 or higher is required for a student to enroll in MATH 103 (College Algebra) at Dickinson State University, Mayville State University, Minot State University, North Dakota State University, University of North Dakota or Valley City State University. An ACT Mathematics sub-test score of 21 or higher is required for a student to enroll in MATH 103 (College Algebra) at Bismarck State College, Dakota College Bottineau, Lake Region State College, North Dakota State College of Science or Williston State College. Students without qualifying ACT scores must successfully complete a developmental mathematics course before enrolling in Math 103 (College Algebra).

Effective Fall 2012, the following placement scores are required for admission to English 110 (College Composition I). An ACT English sub-test score of 18 or higher is required for a student to enroll in English 110 (College Composition I) at Dickinson State University, Mayville State University, Minot State University, North Dakota State University, University of North Dakota, Valley City State University, Bismarck State College, Dakota College Bottineau, Lake Region State College, North Dakota State College of Science or Williston State College. Students without qualifying ACT scores must successfully complete a developmental English course before enrolling in English 110 (College Composition I).

North Dakota University System Admission Policies-Admission Scores

The graduating class of 2015 will use the following mathematical formula to generate an admission score that indicates automatic admission at Dickinson State University, Mayville State University, Minot State University, North Dakota State University,

University of North Dakota or Valley City State University. Admission scores will be implemented along with an available online tool to allow students to calculate their readiness.

*(3 x ACT) + (20 x GPA) + (5 x High School Core) + (10 North Dakota Residency)

High School Core will be capped at 15 courses.

North Dakota State University and University of North Dakota Automatic Score shall be: 210 Minot State University Automatic Score shall be: 190

Dickinson State College, Mayville State University, Minot State University, and Valley City State University Automatic Score shall be: 180

If a student does not meet the score for automatic admission they will be reviewed individually by admission staff on each campus.

Community Colleges (Bismarck State College, Dakota College Bottineau, Lake Region State College, North Dakota State College of Science or Williston State College) remain open access for high school graduates.

*North Dakota University Systems will pilot this new admission formula in 2014 for data gathering purposes. The formula will be used to determine eligibility for admission, for the first time, with the graduating class of 2015.

North Dakota State Scholarship Opportunities

Any resident student who graduates from high school and meets the criteria is eligible to apply for a North Dakota Academic Scholarship or a North Dakota Career and Technical Education Scholarship in the amount of $750 per semester or $1,500 for the academic year based on full-time enrollment in an accredited higher education institution in North Dakota, both public and private.

The scholarships are renewable provided the student maintains a 2.75 GPA based on a 4.0 scale, reviewed each semester. Students may be eligible for up to $6,000 within six academic school years (do not have to be consecutive). Application deadline will be June 7 of each year with high school graduates not of their eligibility for either scholarship by June 30. Applications will be available online beginning March 1.

ND Academic Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

Graduate from high school in North Dakota.

Obtain a grade of at least a C in each course required for the diploma and scholarship and earn a cumulative grade point average of B (3.0).

Course requirements:

o 1 credit of Algebra II

o 1 credit of mathematics for which Algebra II is a prerequisite*

o 2 credits of same foreign language, Native American language, or sign language o 1 credit of fine arts** or career and technical education***

o 1 credit of fine arts**, career and technical education***, or foreign, Native American, or American Sign language

1 credit of an AP course and completion of the AP exam in that course or either ½ credit or 1 credit in a dual credit course****

Receive a composite score of at least a 24 on an ACT no later than the February ACT test date of your senior year. For more information go to www.actstudent.org

North Dakota Career and Technical Education Scholarship

Graduate from high school in North Dakota.

Obtain a grade of at least a C in each course required for the diploma and scholarship and earn a cumulative grade point average of B (3.0)

Course requirements:

o 1 credit of Algebra II

o 2 credits of a coordinated plan of study recommended by the Department of Career and Technical Education. Please see your counselor for a copy of the coordinated plans of study or visit the website (under scholarship opportunities) or the CHS website for more information.

o 2 additional credits of CTE

o 1 additional credit of CTE, foreign language, or fine arts.

Receive a composite score of at least a 24 on an ACT or a score of at least a 5 on each of the three WorkKeys assessments (Locating Information, Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics). WorkKeys will be given at Bismarck State College. Call the BSC Testing Services Office at 224-5658 to register 24 hours in advance. Deadline for taking WorkKeys assessments is the February ACT test date of your senior year. For more information on the WorkKeys assessments go to:
