Mobile Admin Deployment Guide
This document is provided to help you best deploy Mobile Admin within your network infrastructure. The diagram below represents a possible deployment of Mobile Admin. The Mobile Admin server is typically deployed centrally within the network you wish to administer.
Hardware Selection
Once you know how Mobile Admin is to be deployed, the next step is to determine your hardware requirements for the Mobile Admin server. Depending on the number of users, Mobile Admin can either be installed on an existing system or VM, or can be installed on its own box. If fewer than 20 users will be accessing Mobile Admin, the server can be installed on a system/VM with the following suggested minimum system requirements: • Intel Pentium 4 CPU, minimum • 1 GB RAM • 20 GB available disk space If Mobile Admin will be accessed by 20‐50 users, the server should be installed on a DMZBlackBerry Enterprise Server or VPN

Pre-requisites for server types
Some server types have pre‐requisite elements that need to be installed in order for them to be managed by Mobile Admin. For more information about these server types, please refer to the “Software Environment” section below.
Software Environment
General considerations The Mobile Admin server requires at least a Windows 2000 SP4 (Windows 2003 is recommended) server running MSI v3.1 and .NET 2.0. Server-specific considerations Specific configurations are required for the following server types: • “VMware Virtual Infrastructure” on page 2 • “BlackBerry Enterprise Servers (BES)” on page 3 • “IBM Lotus Domino” on page 3 • “Microsoft Exchange” on page 3 • “Microsoft SQL Servers” on page 4 • “Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS)” on page 4 • “Microsoft Domain Name System (DNS)” on page 4 • “Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007” on page 4 • “Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager” on page 4 • “Novell eDirectory” on page 4 • “Citrix servers (MetaFrame, Presentation servers, XenApp)” on page 5 • “Symantec Backup Exec servers” on page 5 • “HP iLO servers” on page 5 VMware Virtual InfrastructureTo enable Mobile Admin to manage VMware VI servers, Microsoft Powershell and the VMware Toolkit (for Windows) must be installed on the same system as Mobile Admin. Note If Mobile Admin is deployed in an environment with high levels of concurrent users,
BlackBerry Enterprise Servers (BES) BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5
The BES 5 API and the BlackBerry Administration Service must be installed on the same system in order for Mobile Admin to manage the BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.
BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.0 or 4.1 for Microsoft Exchange Servers/ Lotus Domino servers/ Novell GroupWise Servers
The BlackBerry Enterprise Server Resource Kit must be downloaded (from www.blackberry.com); the Blackberry Enterprise Server User Administration service can be installed on the same computer as the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server User Administration service must be tested to ensure that the install was successful. To test the installation, run the following command on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server:
BESUserAdminClient -p yourpassword -stats -servers
BlackBerry Enterprise Server 2.2 for Lotus Domino Servers See “IBM Lotus Domino” on page 3.
IBM Lotus Domino
To use Mobile Admin to manage IBM Lotus Domino 5.0 or later (partitioned or unpartitioned servers) the Mobile Admin Server software must be installed on the same computer as an IBM Lotus Domino 6.0 (or later) server. It is strongly recommended that you install the Domino server first, then install the Mobile Admin server on the same computer. Do not install the Mobile Admin Server on a partitioned Domino server or a computer that has the Domino Client installed. Microsoft Exchange To enable Mobile Admin to manage Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Exchange System Management Tools and the Windows Administration Tools must be installed on the same computer as the Mobile Admin Server. Use the corresponding version—2000, 2003, 2007—to your Exchange server.
To manage Microsoft Exchange 2000/2003, the following must be installed: • the Microsoft Exchange System Management Tools (available on the Microsoft
Exchange 2000/2003 installation CD)
• the Windows 2000 or 2003 Administration Tools are available on the Windows 2000 or 2003 Server CD under: “...\I386\ADMINPAK.MSI”.
To manage Microsoft Exchange 2007, the following must be installed:
• the Microsoft Exchange Management Tools (available on the Microsoft Exchange 2007 installation CD)
Note For information about common errors encountered when installing the BES User Administration Service, go to:
For more information on managing Microsoft Exchange 2007, go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555841.
Microsoft SQL Servers
To enable Mobile Admin to manage Microsoft SQL Servers, you will be prompted to install any necessary management tools by following the Microsoft SQL setup process. Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS)
To enable Mobile Admin to manage Microsoft IIS, install the IIS Common Files component on the same computer where you installed the Mobile Admin Server.
Microsoft Domain Name System (DNS)
To enable Mobile Admin to manage a Microsoft Windows 2000 DNS server, you must install the Microsoft DNS Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Provider on the DNS servers you want to manage.
Download and install the DNS WMI Provider included in the Windows 2000 resource kit, or from Microsoft at: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/reskit/win2000/dnsprov.zip
Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007
The System Center Operations Manager 2007 SP1 Client Tools much be installed on the same system as Mobile Admin to manage SCOM servers with Mobile Admin.
Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager
Citrix servers (MetaFrame, Presentation servers, XenApp)
To manage your Citrix servers (MetaFrame, Presentation, XenApp) with Mobile Admin, you must install the Citrix WMI Provider on the Citrix MetaFrame or Presentation servers that you want to manage.
Symantec Backup Exec servers
