This month’s goal is to spend some time cleaning, decluttering and

organizing your organizing systems. You might not realize it but you

most likely have organizing systems in place in your home. This

month’s goal is to evaluate what is working and figure out your pain-

points or the systems that aren’t working. Summer is a great time

to do this for a couple reasons – hopefully things are a little more

laid back and these types of organizing projects are more fun than

deep cleaning your bathrooms. I’m going to share my three favorite

organizing systems with you – use them for inspiration and to get you

started thinking about what you can put into place in your home. Most

importantly, don’t think that an organizing system has to be difficult

– an organizing system can be as simple as a strategically placed

laundry hamper where the pile of clothes usually ends up.

Try these tips for getting motivated to

create organizational systems.

P A P E R

Use the summer months to get a handle on incoming paper.

Start with an in and an out basket. Incoming mail or paperwork

goes in the IN basket and outgoing mail OR items to shred go in

the OUT basket. Once you have one paper problem solved, find

another to fix.

C O M M A N D C E N T E R

A command center can be located anywhere you can easily see

and use it. We have ours on a small counter in the kitchen by the

phone. This works well for us, but you might prefer to put yours

in a mud room or office area. The command center is where we

keep our wall calendar, phone, address file, pens, pencils and three

essential family file folders (school, in process, invitations). I found

an organizer for the files and it has room for pens and pencils - it’s

handy and looks nice - two essentials for this organized space.

S I N K S I D E T R AY S

This idea is really simple but if you’re dealing with lots of items

scattered on bathroom and kitchen counters, this is a great

system to implement. Why? Creating a home for the items will

help you put them back and it also makes cleaning counters a little

easier. This can be a plate, a small tray, even a cake plate

can be used. Place your soaps and other items on the tray and

start getting in the habit of putting things away right away and the

next time you wipe down the counters simply move the tray,

spray, and wipe.
