The Dog Days of Summer...Well it seems that with the beginning of another school year and the end of summer in our sights, we should all think back and asks ourselves… What Did I do on My Summer Vacation? A questions most commonly asked by our teachers when returning from school….but not having been a student of formal education for some time, I can’t say I’ve been asked that question all that much, as of late….But that doesn’t diminish the question. For Rotarians this question could be answered in many ways. I fed the poor in Mexico. I gave Polio vaccinations to villagers in India. I provided clean drinking water to tribesmen in Africa….I worked hard to raise money for our Rotary Club and honored more than seventy High School All-Stars.
After listening to our speaker this week, Caryn West, it is clear to me that near or far we can make a difference. That is the essence of Rotary…We are an organization without borders and without limitations. To me, Caryn’s presentation served as a reminder of how much work we have to do. It also reminded me that through our organization we have the ability to help people in far away lands.
It is my thought that the Almaden Rotary Club doesn’t just consist of a bunch of people that like hanging out on a Friday afternoon. We are there because we want to make a difference. We want to make our community a better place to live. It is my hope that when each one of us is asked….What Did I do on My Summer Vacation? We can say, I busted my butt to help others and had a hell of time doing it. Thanks to Caryn West for your hard work and inspiration!!! Cheers,
Ken

Rotary Day @ the A’s
Angie & Roger Hassler’s Day at the A’s on Saturday, 15 August: Rotary day at the A’s not only is social event for clubs, it also can be a
Los Gatos Morning Club sold close to 200 tickets!
Each year, thousands of young people take part in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program worldwide. Young people ages 14-18 chosen for their leadership potential attend an all-expenses-paid seminar camp and workshop to discuss leadership skills and to learn those skills through practice. Rotary clubs and districts select participants and facilitate the event's curriculum.
RYLA aims to:
* Demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for youth;
* Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders; * Encourage leadership of youth by youth; and
* Recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities.
RYLA was officially adopted by Rotary International in 1971, and is one of the most significant and fastest-growing programs of Rotary service. RYLA programs often lead to the formation or strengthening of Rotaract and Interact clubs. RYLA participants often go on to become Youth Exchange students or Ambassadorial Scholars.
Roger and Angie attended the tailgate as well as the game and at the tailgate had the opportunity to taste pulled pork sandwiches, chicken or vegetable shish kebob, tri tip, a variety of sausages, an abundance of salads, lots of watermelon, corn on the cob (even with chocolate sauce on those ears), homemade peach cobbler, cookies, margaritas…..the list goes on and on.
Well, the A’s lost but our kid’s didn’t. The Interactors had a lot of fun and I know quite a few of them will be RYLA candidates, if not participants.
