There have been 117 George J. Mitchell Scholars 91% responded to a ten-year survey on the program 100% said they would recommend the Mitchell Scholarship

30% are part of a ‘protected class’

25 Mitchells on the basis of race/color/ethnicity 10 on the basis of religion/creed

6 on the basis of gender identity/sexual orientation 4 with disabilities

8 have served in the US military

33% are of either Irish or Scots Irish heritage.

56% had no connection whatsoever to Ireland before becoming a Mitchell Scholar.

The most popular areas of study in Ireland and Northern Ireland are Human Rights/International Studies/Peace & Conflict with the Arts being second most popular. For specific fields of study, bios on every Mitchell Scholar is found on our website at www.us-irelandalliance.org under the scholarships section.

Internships or Volunteer activities

More than half the Mitchell Scholars held internships or volunteered. While this is not required, the Alliance encourages internships as a way to meet people in the community and become an active participant in Irish life, often outside the university setting. 70% of have already returned on a visit to Ireland or Northern Ireland since their year as a Mitchell Scholar.

48% say their Irish or NI friends have come to visit them since they’ve returned to the US.

While in Ireland virtually every Mitchell Scholar received numerous visits of friends and family from the US.
