The Eucharist
Trinity 10
Welcome to Bradford Cathedral
The seat of the Bishop of Leeds and a Centre of Worship and MissionOne of three Cathedrals in the Anglican Diocese of Leeds
Our purpose is serving Christ and transforming lives through welcome, worship and encounter.
❖ Please join in at home, and in the Cathedral, by saying or singing the words in
bold type in this order of service
❖ We apologise that the Hearing Enhancement Loop is not currently operational.
❖ This service will be broadcast on YouTube and available for the following two weeks. The hymn-singing is also being recorded today for broadcast on Premier Christian Radio.
❖ There will be no collection taken during the service but you are invited to make a donation to the Cathedral, as part of your worship, using the donations box by the door, or online, through the Cathedral website.
❖ For those at home, unable to receive Holy Communion: The term ‘Spiritual
Communion’ has been used historically to describe the means of grace by which a person, prevented for some serious reason from sharing in a celebration of the Eucharist, nonetheless shares in the communion of Jesus Christ. The Church of which we are members is not defined by the walls of a building but by the Body of Christ of which we are members. In making our communion spiritually, we are joining with Christians everywhere to be nourished by the one who tells us, ‘I am the Bread of Life’.
❖ The flowers today have been given by David and Sally Runton "with thanks for all the family".
❖ Members of the Cathedral Choir leads this morning’s worship. The choral settings are the Gloria from David Thorne’s Trinity Mass and the Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei from C. Wood’s Mass in the Phrygian Mode.

Hymn
In Christ there is no east or west, in him no south or north,
but one great fellowship of love throughout the whole wide earth. In him shall true hearts everywhere their high communion find;
his service is the golden cord, close binding humankind.
Join hands, then, children of the faith, whate’er your race may be;
who serves my Father as his child is surely kin to me.
In Christ now meet both east and west, in him meet south and north;
all Christlike souls are one in him, throughout the whole wide earth.
Prayers of Penitence
God so loved the world
that he gave his only son Jesus Christ to save us from our sins,
to be our advocate in heaven, and to bring us to eternal life.
Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, firmly resolved to keep God’s commandments and to live in love and peace with all.
Silence
Almighty God, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour
in thought and word and deed,
through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault.
We are truly sorry
and repent of all our sins.
For the sake of your son Jesus Christ, who died for us,
forgive us all that is past
and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name.
Amen.
Almighty God,
who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you,
pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

New Testament Reading
Ephesians 4.25 – 5.2 read by John WhithamSo then, putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbours, for we are members of one another. 26Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go
down on your anger, 27and do not make room for the devil. 28Thieves must give up
stealing; rather let them labour and work honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the needy. 29Let no evil talk come out of your mouths,
but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear. 30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you
were marked with a seal for the day of redemption. 31Put away from you all
bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all
malice, 32and be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in
Christ has forgiven you. 51Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, 2and
live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Gospel Reading
John 6.35, 41-51 Read by Canon Rod Anderson, Cathedral ChaplainHear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.
Glory to you, O Lord
Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
41Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, ‘I am the bread that
came down from heaven.’ 42They were saying, ‘Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph,
whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, “I have come down from heaven”?’ 43Jesus answered them, ‘Do not complain among yourselves. 44No one can
come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me; and I will raise that person up on the last day. 45It is written in the prophets, “And they shall all be taught by God.”
Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me. 46Not that
anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. 47Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48I am the bread of
life. 49Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50This is the
bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 51I am
the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.’
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

The Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn
Break thou the bread of life, dear Lord, to me,
as thou didst break the loaves beside the sea;
beyond the sacred page I seek thee, Lord; my spirit pants for thee, O living Word!
Thou art the bread of life, O Lord, to me,
thy holy word the truth that saveth me.
Give me to eat and live with thee above;
teach me to love thy truth, for thou art love.
O send thy Spirit, Lord, now unto me,
that he may touch my eyes, and make me see:
show me the truth concealed within thy word,
and in thy book revealed I see thee, Lord.
Great Thanksgiving Prayer
The Lord is here.
God’s Spirit is with us.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give thanks and praise.
It is always right to give you thanks, God our Creator, loving and faithful, holy and strong.
You made us and the whole universe, and filled your world with life.
You sent your Son to live among us, Jesus our Saviour, Mary’s child. He suffered on the cross;
he died to save us from our sins; he rose in glory from the dead. You send your Spirit
to bring new life to the world,
and clothe us with power from on high. And so we join the angels
to celebrate and sing:
Choir Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of Thy glory. Glory be to Thee, O Lord most High.
Blessed is he that cometh in the Name of the Lord. Hosanna in the Highest.
On the night before he died,
Jesus shared a meal with his friends. He took the bread, and thanked you. He broke it, and gave it to them, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this to remember me.
After the meal, Jesus took the cup of wine. He thanked you, and gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you.
This is my blood,
11
Great is the mystery of faith:
Christ has died. Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.
As we bring this bread and wine,
and remember his death and resurrection, send your Holy Spirit,
that we who share these gifts
may be fed by Christ’s body and his blood. Pour your Spirit on us
that we may love one another, work for the healing of the earth, and share the good news of Jesus, as we wait for his coming in glory. For honour and praise belong to you, with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit: one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer
Being made one by the power of the Spirit, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray:
Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
Breaking of the Bread
We break this bread
to share in the body of Christ.
Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
Giving of Communion
The body of Christ given for you.
Amen.
The blood of Christ shed for you.
Amen.

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: grant us Thy peace. Please stand in your place if you would like to receive the bread of Communion
Please indicate if you’d like a gluten-free wafer
If you would like to make an Act of Spiritual Communion, you may wish to use the following prayer, after Richard of Chichester:
Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits you have given me,
for all the pains and insults you have borne for me. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day.
Amen.
Communion Motet
Oh most merciful! Oh most bountiful! God the Father Almighty!
By the Redeemer’s sweet intercession hear us, help us when we cry!
13
Prayer after Communion
God of our pilgrimage,
you have willed that the gate of mercy
should stand open for those who trust in you: look upon us with your favour
that we who follow the path of your will may never wander from the way of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hymn
Jesus shall reign where’er the sun does his successive journeys run;
his kingdom stretch from shore to shore, till moons shall wax and wane no more. People and realms of every tongue dwell on his love with sweetest song, and infant voices shall proclaim
their early blessings on his name. Blessings abound where’er he reigns: the prisoner leaps to lose his chains; the weary find eternal rest,
and all the sons of want are blest. To him shall endless prayer be made, and praises throng to crown his head; his name like incense shall arise
with every morning sacrifice. Let every creature rise and bring peculiar honours to our King; angels descend with songs again, and earth repeat the loud Amen.
Dismissal
God the Holy Trinity make you strong in faith and love, defend you on every side, and guide you in truth and peace; and the blessing of God almighty
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always.
Amen.
Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
In the name of Christ. Amen.
