1 Introduction
This document describes how to download a Redwood Engine software update from the Redwood SFTP server and install it on the Redwood Engine. Instructions for Mac OS and Windows are provided.
Software updates are downloaded as an image file (.img) from the Redwood SFTP server to a local computer, such as a laptop. After you upload the image file, the software is activated and the Redwood Engine reboots.
To finalize the upgrade, you must reboot the Engine, which temporarily turns off the lights. To minimize the impact, complete the upgrade after work hours. However, you can download the software and back up your existing configuration at any time.
Only upload image files provided by the Redwood Systems Technical Support team.
Note: If are running a version earlier than 2.0.0, you cannot upgrade to 3.1.0. You must first upgrade your system to 2.0.1 (or later) and then upgrade to 3.1.0.
1.1 Backing Up the Redwood Engine Configuration, Statistics, and Log Files
The configuration file specifies how the fixtures are grouped in locations, the policies for those locations, as well as network configuration information. The statistics file holds the statistical information pertaining to power, motion, and temperature readings. The log files contain global system and software messages essential for troubleshooting if a problem occurs.
To back up the Redwood Engine configuration, statistics, and log files:
1. Open the Tech Support web page on the Redwood Engine by using
https://<redwood_IP_address>/support.html on the engine you are updating. If you are directly connected to the secondary port of the Engine, the address is
5. Under Statistics, click Download Statistics to download the statsBackup.tar.gz file. The file is compressed as a Linux archive.
6. Under Other, click Download Support Data to download the supportData.tar log file. The file is compressed as a Linux archive.
2 Checking for Custom PIDs
If your site has fixtures that were installed with custom PIDs, the PIDs might not be included in this release. That may cause specific light fixtures to not be operational after the upgrade. Hence, prior to upgrading, check whether you have custom PIDs on your engine. Note that information down and the same can then be relayed to Redwood Systems Technical Support team if those fixtures are not operational post upgrade.
To check for custom PIDs in your installation:
1. On the Redwood Engine, Open a web browser, enter the URL of the Engine that you are updating, plus /support.html. If you are directly connected to the secondary port of the Engine, the address is https://192.168.1.1/support.html.
2. Under the Configuration section, click List Adapter/Fixture Configuration. 3. If you have custom fixture PIDs, they are listed at the bottom of the
/redwood/conf/adapter/config/fixture folder under the Custom Adapter and
3 Downloading the Update
Use Secure FTP (SFTP) to download the image file. You can use your own method or the following directions for Mac OS or Windows.
Note: The instructions use the most recent release: 3.1.0 build 16208 (rle-image-rel-3.1.0.16208-final.img).
3.1 Using Your Own SFTP Method
If you are familiar with Secure FTP, use your own method to retrieve the image file. The information you need is:
Hostname: 198.135.207.192 Port number: 37625
Username: redexchange Password: q77@Nard
The username and password are case-sensitive. When you are logged in, navigate to the download directory and download this file:
rle-image-rel-3.1.0.16208-final.img
After the file is downloaded, go to “Backing Up the Redwood Engine Configuration, Statistics, and Log Files” to complete the upgrade.
3.2 Using SFTP with Mac OS
1. Open a terminal window.
2. Change to the directory where you want to download the image file. 3. Enter the following command:
sftp -oPort=37625 [email protected]
[email protected]'s password: q77@Nard Connected to 198.135.207.192.
sftp>
5. At the sftp prompt, issue the get command to download the image on to your local computer.
sftp> get /xfer/rle-image-rel-3.1.0.16208-final.img 6. Exit the SFTP server.
sftp> exit
3.3 Using WinSCP with Windows
The following instructions assume that you are using Windows XP or Windows 7. WinSCP is a free SFTP and FTP client for Windows. To download WinSCP, go to http://winscp.net.
If you are installing WinSCP as part of this process, you can choose either the side-by-side view or a single view. We recommend using the side-by-side view because it is easier to drag files between applications.
1. Launch WinSCP on your computer.
2. On the WinSCP Login page, enter the following information: Hostname: 198.135.207.192
Port number: 37625 Username: redexchange Password: q77@Nard File protocol: SFTP 3. Click the Login button.
4. In the right pane, expand the xfer folder.
5. In the download folder, click the file rle-image-rel-3.1.0.16208-final.img and drag it to the desired location on your PC in the left pane.
6. To transfer the file, click the Copy button. The progress of the transfer is shown.
7. When the transfer has completed, verify that the image file on your local PC is in the correct location.
8. Close the WinSCP application by pressing F10. 9. Proceed to Installing the Redwood Software Update
To install the software update on the Redwood System Engine:
