We, the people of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Faith Community, Baptized into Jesus Christ, formed by Word and Sacrament, and Empowered by the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Seek to be a visible sign of God’s love.
We seek to build the Kingdom of God by: Using our unique gifts to minister to one another, Welcoming all and caring for those in need, Teaching our faith to others and Uniting in worship as a family with the Body of Christ.
Dear St. Paul Family and Friends,
In the Gospel this Sunday, we see how Jesus values rest and retreat. The apostles gathered together with Jesus and reported all they had done and taught, and Jesus said: “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” Even when people, in great numbers, were coming and going they had no time to eat, Jesus insisted that they go to a deserted place. The Gospel says: “So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place.” Jesus did not only ask his disciples to retreat, he insisted that they do so.
Retreat is a break from our oftentimes routinary calendar. It is as important as active work. It is an encounter with God often characterized by prayer, silence, meditation and reflection. It seeks to re-evaluate our lives, renew our faith, and refresh our souls, so we can resume our daily lives with clearer resolution, vision and direction. It seeks to bring about inner transformation, that is, being transformed into the likeness of Christ, so we can bring about necessary transformation in the world. I hope to see more retreats and spiritual encounters happening in our parish – for families, couples, men and women, ministers, employees, and many others.
But the purpose of retreat is not simply to break away and escape from the world. It is meant to make us more sensitive to the needs of our loved ones and the people around us; needs that are oftentimes not articulated but can be discovered only in silence. It is meant for us to have a better appreciation of work, just as how God rested on the seventh day, and he looked at His creation and found it very good. By doing so, we gain a renewed passion and energy to continue our good works. More importantly, it is meant to open our eyes to who our true God is – it is not our work but only the one true God we call Father. The purpose of rest, Pope Benedict emphasizes, is to teach us that we do not worship work but we worship God and Him alone.

We are grateful to all who have continued to support the Ministry Center Building Fund. Fr. Romy and the Finance Council have approved a temporary change in how the funds received are to be used.
Since the start of the pandemic we have experienced lower donations. In response to this shortfall, we are temporarily diverting the Ministry Center collections to the church account to fund ongoing parish operations.
Thank you for your understanding.

No, we’re not speaking about that dreaded sound one may hear in a parking lot. Rather, this is the acronym for a new opportunity here at St. Paul’s:
Welcome
Hospitality, and Assistance Ministry
This new opportunity to participate in the life of the parish, is a combination of several parish ministries: Usher, Hospitality, Internal
Guidance Ministry (IGM) and External
Guidance Ministry (EGM). This unique, new ministry takes the best elements of these four ministries and combines them into one new opportunity to serve the people of God here at St. Paul’s during our liturgical celebrations.
In the Gospels, Christ calls each of us to be bound one to another, in both love and service.
This call is echoed in many of the Scripture passages found in the New Testament (e.g., the Letters of St. Paul (Ephesians, Galatians, etc.), the First Letter of St. Peter, etc.). As we move toward that full, active parish life,
especially our parish liturgical life that we had longed for during the months of the pandemic.
We find that we are now in need of many new ministers to attain a full and active liturgical life.
So, we ask you to prayerfully consider just how God is calling you, to place your own unique gifts and talents at the service of the wider community of faith.
We do ask that you be in good health, at least 18 years of age and be willing to serve where and when needed. As the Holy Spirit of God prompts you to participate in this new
opportunity to build up the kingdom of God within our parish community, we ask that you contact Teresa Dang at 559-281-8346 or via email at [email protected]
Thank you and may God continue to bless you and your loved ones.
Fr. Mike

T
he great Italian poet Dante Alighieri begins the Inferno, the first part of his masterpiece the Divine Comedy, with the image of being lost in a dark wood. Somewhere along the way, he lost sight of his true destination. Like Dante, we are all travelers on a journey which will end in either Heaven or Hell. We all long to see God in Heaven, but we encounter so many distractions, as well as legitimate needs and desires, along the way.If we aren’t careful, these things can make us lose our way and forget the greatness of our calling.
When that happens, we end up living an empty life that pales in comparison to the things we are made for. Our true hunger and loneliness can’t be filled by this world. But God hasn’t left us alone to wander in the dark wood—he sent us his only Son to lead us home to him. Jesus is our true compass. He is our Good Shepherd. He is the way, the truth, and the life.
D
ISCUSSION: Please watch this week's Opening the Word video at sptacc.formed.orgBefore this week’s Gospel Reading, Jesus had sent the Apostles to preach the Gospel, heal the sick, and cast out demons. As the Apostles returned and told Jesus about their experiences, he invited them to go to a quiet place to rest. But the people had started to receive God’s love through his Apostles, and they followed them. Here our Gospel ends, with Jesus’s heart moved with pity for these people who are seeking his truth and life.
Have you ever experienced the compassion of Christ as the crowds did in this week’s Gospel?
Do you really believe that he is waiting just for you?
When Jesus feels compassion on the crowds as sheep without a shepherd, his first action is to teach. This seems to show that the primary way that he leads his sheep is by giving them the gift of the truth.
What has been your experience with learning the truth of your own Catholic Faith? Where has your education taken place? Do you feel like you’ve received a good education on the truths of the Faith or not? Do you have a curiosity to learn more? What do you think about the truth being such an important part of what Jesus came to give us a Good Shepherd?
D
IGGING DEEPER:Evangelization and Catechesis.
These are two words that have been used in many different ways but should be defined well so that we understand our role as
Christian leaders. Evangelization must include a moment when we explicitly proclaim the Gospel with a call to conversion. Catechesis educates beyond that first proclamation and continually nourishes and matures the Christian. In many churches, there has been a lot of catechesis without actually evangelizing the parishioners— they have not had a conversion moment when they’ve said “no” to the world and
“yes” to Christ.
If we never evangelize people and definitively invite them into relationship with Jesus, then the truths they do learn are outside of the relationship they are intended for. As we teach, it’s very important to constantly pray for our participants’ conversions and look for moments to invite them into relationship with Jesus so that the teaching truly takes hold.
