TABE Testing Centers
WHAT IS THE TABE TEST?
The Test for Adult Basic Education, commonly known as the TABE, is an academic exam used to test a person's competency in mathematics (mathematic computation & applied mathematics, reading, language and spelling). These categories, which cover the basic skills used in everyday life, were developed to measure and score your
abilities at the high school level.
The Hollywood Police Department requires that all applicants score a 12.9 in each of the listed testing categories (equivalent to a 12th grade high school education). Please note that some testing centers grade Math Computation
and Applied Mathematics separately and then combine the two for an overall score. Your combined score in these two math categories must be 12.9.
Frequently asked questions: 1. How long is the test?
a. The Survey Version is 90 minutes. There is also a Full Battery Version, which is longer. Either is acceptable as long as all the categories are included.
2. Can I take the test more than once?
a. Yes, you may take the full test as many times as the testing center will allow. If you score less than 12.9 in all areas except for one or two, you may retake just those categories.
3. If I have a college degree, prior military or law enforcement experience, do I still have to submit TABE scores to apply?
a. Yes, every applicant must submit TABE scores of 12.9 regardless of experience or higher education. 4. Is there a study guided available?
a. Yes, McGraw-Hill developed the TABE and an accompanying study guide. It can be found for sale on line and in many college book stores. Be sure to get the Level A study guide.
