Cameron Willis Self-Contained
Emergency Shutdown Systems
C
ameron Willis Self-Contained Emergency Shutdown (ESD) Systems are used to hydraulically actuate gate valves in remote locations. As the nameimplies, these systems are totally self-contained and operate as ESD to automatically shut-in production in an emergency situation. Such systems
are ideal for use in on production well-heads or pipelines in remote locations such as deserts, rain forests, arctic envi-ronments, jungles or any area where supervision is minimal or no additional power source is available.
Cameron Willis Self-Contained ESD Systems feature reliable, field-proven Cameron Willis Saf-T-Gard™ hydraulic actuators mounted on Cameron FLS gate valves. The Cameron Willis con-trol system contains the sensors and hydraulic power source necessary to close the valve when an abnor-mal condition detected. For example, when the system is in automatic mode and flowline pressure increases above or below the pres-sure sensors “high” or “low”
set-tings, the system automatically closes the valve and shuts in the well.
Or, if a fire occurs, the eutectic on the fusible plug melts and the system automatically closes the valve and shuts in the well. The system can also be operated in manual mode where simple operation of a needle valve opens or closes the valve.
Cameron Willis Self-Contained ESD Systems are available in 1-13/16” through 7” nominal
valve sizes and work-ing pressures up to 15,000 psi. Two
ver-sions are available, a single pump and a double pump type which can be used when control of a master valve and subsurface safety valve (SSV) is required from
one control box. Options include actuator-mounted or stand-mounted installation, enclosed panel or non-enclosed
panel, anti-theft shroud, panel-mounted or field-mounted pressure sensors, electric position indicators and first-out indicators. In addition, fusible plugs are available in temperature ranges 160°F, 212°F and 283° F. Solar
powered pneumatic and solar powered hydraulic systems are also available.
Features and Benefits
•System incorporates reliable, field-proven Cameron FLS gate valves, Cameron Willis Saf-T-Gard actuators and control panel from a single source.
•Automatic control for master valves and subsurface safety valves provides safety in remote locations. •Self-contained power source is ideal for remote areas,
wells without power, or sites with minimal supervision. •Available in single-and double-pump configurations to
control a single gate valve or a gate valve and SSV. •Closed loop hydraulic circuitry ensures
contaminant-free, long lasting supply of operating fluid.
•Field-proven in extreme warm and cold environments.
•High/low pressure sensors provide flowline pressure monitoring to preset values.
•Hydraulic accumulator accommodates temperature induced volume changes of the fluid contained in the closed circuit.
•Fusible plug ensures shutdown in case of fire.
•All components housed in secure stainless steel enclo-sure which meets the requirements for operation in hazardous locations without the need to purge the box. •Control panel can be mounted to the actuator or to
a nearby stand to accommodate a variety of field situations.

Operating Procedure
Place (K-1) the hydraulic dump valve in bypass, by turn-ing the handle in the bypass position. Hand pump (B-1) to the required actuator operating pressure. This pressure can be seen on pressure gauge (E-1). When the flowline pressure is between the low (F-1) ad the high (G-1) pressure sensor set points, the 100 regulated pressure from (C-1), which can be seen on pressure gauge (D-1) will flow through the low sen-sor (G-1) and high sensen-sor (F-1) allowing the 100 psi to hold (K-1) hydraulic dump valve closed. Now take (K-1) out of bypass by turning the handle to the in-service position. The system is now in service. If an ESD, fire, or PSHL occurs, the pilot pressure from (K-1) dump valve will be removed, allowing (K-1) to dump the fluid from the actuator back into the reservoir, closing the surface safety valve (SSV).

SSV Control Panel
The control system for a typical Cameron Willis Self-Contained ESD System is incorporated into a 316 stain-less steel enclosure with a mounting bracket. Connectors are mounted on the side of the panel for ease of installa-tion in virtually any field layout.
A typical controls system enclosure includes the fol-lowing components: Hydraulic hand pump to provide the
necessary output pressure to the actuator. Closed loop hydraulic circuitry for maintenance of hydraulic pressure. Hydraulic accumulator with 900 psi nitrogen pre-charge for thermal expansion. Relief valves on both high pres-sure and low prespres-sure hydraulic circuits. ESD valve for emergency shutdown. Pressure gauges to monitor output pressures for the high pressure and low pressure circuit.
