LEARNING JOURNEY – PROGRAM FOR EXECUTIVE DEVELOPMENT
WHAT
As a functional manager, you’ve already successfully overcome the first difficult transition in your career – going from being an individual contributor to managing a team. But are you prepared for the second difficult transition of stepping into a business leadership position, where you move out of your area of expertise to manage multiple functions, or a number of countries, or a number of businesses?
Overnight the level of complexity you face will dramatically increase. As an emerging global leader, you’ll need to navigate increasing complexity and engage a wider scope of stakeholders to make positive change happen in your organization. You’ll need to go from providing answers to extracting answers from others. You’ll go from benchmarking others doing similar activities to extrapolating principles that you can apply from activities, companies, countries and even industries far from your comfort zone.
IMD’S PROGRAM FOR EXECUTIVE DEVELOPMENT WILL HELP YOU:
»
Acquire the key concepts and capabilities needed to manage the difficultand challenging transition to business leadership
»
Understand how to provide a guiding vision, how to pull together variousfunctions, businesses or country teams to create value
»
Leverage the strengths of the different members of your teamIn addition to being the second-most difficult transition, this career evolution is also the gateway to senior global leadership responsibilities. If you don’t excel at making the step to business leader, you may not be offered the chance to move into executive positions.
WHO
IMD’s Program for Executive Development is for experienced functional managers who have recently transitioned or will soon transition into business leadership positions. Participants generally have 10 or more years of relevant management experience.

LEARNING JOURNEY
PREPARATION
You will use IMD’s virtual program platform to complete the required pre-readings and a 360 assessment designed specifically for the program.
MODULE 1
Understanding the business leader role – During this module, you will receive feedback and coaching from highly experienced executive coaches based on the 360 assessment completed in the pre-program preparation. You will explore the capabilities leaders need to run business units and create a plan for your personal development. You will learn how to assess the competitive environment and create a vision and strategy for a complete business. You will explore how to manage multiple stakeholders such as governments, regulators, customers, suppliers, NGOs and employees – and learn to diagnose the architecture, structure, systems, capabilities and talent of business units. You will also focus on developing the executive presence necessary to be effective as a business leader.
INTER-MODULE DISTANCE LEARNING
You will put into practice the personal and organizational insights gained in Module 1, and will receive follow-up consulting support from your executive coach. You will also engage in discussions with your peers about your change project, and track each other’s progress through use of the IMD virtual program platform.
MODULE 2
Leading change – In this module you will learn to lead change in organizations and develop your capabilities to influence, negotiate, communicate and manage conflict. In the process, you will apply these new learnings to advance your organizational change project. Finally, you will experience the full complexity of leading a business and integrating multiple functions to deliver business results through participation in a comprehensive business simulation. By the end of the program, you will have created a plan for undertaking a substantial change project in your current organization and a personal leadership development plan, which you will implement after Module 2.
POST-PROGRAM DISTANCE LEARNING
The real return on investment comes as you put what you have learned into practice. To ensure this, you will have a follow-up with your executive coach on your progress with your personal development action plan and with IMD Faculty on your organizational development plan.
DIPLOMA
The Program for Executive Development may seem like a serious amount of time and commitment, and it is. But even though you have spent 10 or more years building up successful patterns to this point in your career, unfortunately,
what got you here will not get you there. Letting go of old patterns and acquiring new capabilities is not accomplished overnight.
You can earn a Program for Executive Development diploma by successfully completing proficiency exams taking place after both Foundations for Business Leadership (FBL) and Transition to Business Leadership (TBL).
Contact your Program Advisor to find out more at: +41 21 618 07 00 or
IMD’s PED program will help you make a
smooth transition from a ‘specialist’ to a
‘generalist’ role by unlocking innovative and
courageous business leadership approaches
in sync with times and business needs.
Completing the diploma through exams after
each part of the program, helps you assess
and consolidate what you have learned.
