Short Answer
1. Explain five of the shared interface features of productivity applications in the Office 2010 suite. Answers will vary.
• The application workspace—the area that displays the document which you are currently orking on.
• The document—any type of product you create with the computer, including typewritten work, an electronic spreadsheet, or a graphic.
• The title bar—the top bar of each program interface that includes the program icon, the name of the application, and the name of the file you are working on.
• The three window control buttons—located on the right side of the title bar, they enable the user to minimize, maximize, restore, or close the application’s window. The left button enables you to minimize thewindow so that it is cleared from the screen and reduced down to a button on the task bar. The right button is used to close the window once you finish with the document. The middle button toggles between two functions, depending on whether the program is occupying the entire screen (known as full screen) or is a smaller size.
• The window border—a thick line that encloses the window.
• The status bar—located at the bottom of the application interface, it displays information about the application and the document, such as the current page number and the total number of pages.
• The scroll bars—located at the right and bottom of a document, they allow you to see different parts of a document by using a mouse and dragging the rectangular button that is located on the bar.
• The scroll arrows—appear on the scroll bar and can be clicked to scroll the document line by line.
• The Ribbon—a band located across the top of the application window and below the title bar. It consists of tabs with icons assembled into groups based on their function. Each application has a Ribbon with tab options that match the activities performed by that application.
• A tab—a segment of the Ribbon that contains category titles of tasks you can accomplish within an application.
• A contextual tab—a tab, or tabs, that appears on the right side of the Ribbon, but only when specific objects are selected.
2. What is a codec? Why are they used?
Codec is the technical name for compression/decompression or code/decode algorithms. Codecs are used to reduce file size and thereby reduce file download time.
3. Explain the different between bitmap and vector graphics and list an application program that works with each.
Bitmaps are composed of tiny dots, each corresponding to one pixel on the computer’s display whereas vector graphics images generated by the use of points, lines, curves, polygons, and basically any shape that can be generated by a mathematical description or equation. The final product in a vector graphic can be independently edited and resized, by a change in an
equation, without introducing edge distortion, the curse of bitmapped graphics. 4. Explain the difference between spyware and adware.
Spyware is Internet software that isinstalled on your computer without your knowledge or consent. It may monitor your computer or online activity, relay information about you to the spyware’s source, or allow others to take control of your computer. Spyware usually enters your system through the Internet, sometimes when you open seemingly innocent e-mails and sometimes when you download software—especially shareware and freeware. Some types of spyware, known as keyloggers, can record every keystroke you type and every Internet address you visit. Adware is like spyware, only it’s created specifically by an advertising agency to collect information about your Internet habits, or encourage you to purchase a product.
5. Define the acronyms MUD and MMORPGS as they relate to gaming applications. Provide an example of a popular game that falls into each category.
MUD (multiuser dungeon) is an acronym that refers to online role-playing games; MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role-playing games) are online games that allow a large number of players to interact with one another in virtual worlds. Dungeons and Dragons is an example of a MUD, and EverQuest and World of Warcraft are examples of MMORPGs.
