It is necessary to know what multimedia is despite the fact that it is commonplace. As the name implies, multimedia is the multiple forms of media integrated together. This includes text, graphics, audio, video, drawings, still and moving images, animations, and other forms of media.

The significant exposure to these forms of multimedia can encourage you to use the available sources of information that provide a myriad of facts on different topics. In effect, multimedia can help you improve your knowledge as a student. The use of multimedia in assignments or projects allows you to present your newly attained knowledge through images, audio, and video instead of just using plain texts.

This module is put together to clearly grasp the types, elements, and importance of multimedia.

In this module, you are expected to:

a. Use correct and appropriate multimedia resources when orally giving information, instructions, making explanations, and narrating events in personal or factual recounts (EN7OL-IV-e-3.10)

b. Define multimedia;

c. Classify the types, elements of multimedia; and, d. Give the uses of multimedia.

FIVE COMPONENTS OF

MULTIMEDIA

Multimedia is an interactive media and provides multiple ways to represent information to the user. It provides an interaction between users and digital information as a medium of communication. Multimedia is used extensively in education and other areas like education, training, reference material, business presentations, advertising, and documentaries.

Multimedia is a representation of information attractively and interactively using a combination of text, audio, video, graphics, and animation. In other words, multimedia is a method of presenting information by combining textual data, audio, visuals (video), graphics, and animations. Any information we can get our hands on can be categorized as multimedia. Anything from magazines, television, computers, and the Internet is a form of multimedia as it employs various inputs from multiple sources to bring synthesized content to any users.

Do Young People Still Watch News on TV?

Young people in the Philippines are watching less and less news on television. This comes as no surprise as young people become increasingly addicted to their smartphones. Youth opt for online sources like YouTube videos, social media, and games rather than switch on a TV and watch a news program. The country's youth are more likely to get their day's news about the world from social media, particularly from Facebook newsfeeds. According to Datareportal, there were 73 million social media users in the Philippines in January 2020. The number of social media users in the Philippines increased by 5.8 million (+8.6%) between April 2019 and January 2020. It has been observed that young people are increasingly using social media as their primary news source. As of the third quarter of 2019, Facebook and YouTube were the most popular social media platforms in the Philippines. Within the same period, Filipinos

spent nearly four hours each day on social media.

In 2020, Facebook's user population was over 800 million in Asia. Furthermore, it held nearly 93 percent of the country's social media market share as of 2020. With this figure of social media users, Filipinos rely on social media app as a primary source of news and other platforms.

What Is It

Multimedia has five major components such as text, graphics, sound, video, and animation. They are explained in detail below:

1. Text- Text is the most common multimedia element. All multimedia productions contain

some amount of text. The text can have various types of fonts and sizes. Text is seen as probably one of the most frequently combined mediums in the colorful world of multimedia. It is usually combined with photographs and video presentations to augment these other forms of communication and give a detailed multimedia description.

2. Graphics- Graphics make the multimedia application attractive. Graphics represent

non-text information, such as drawings, photographs, charts, tables, graphs, etc. Graphics are used more often than text to explain a concept and to present background information, etc. The graphic medium can be combined with the text medium. There are two types of Graphics:

o Bitmap images- Bitmap images are real images that can be captured from

devices such as digital cameras or scanners. Generally, bitmap images are not editable. Bitmap images require a large amount of memory.

o Vector Graphics- Vector graphics are drawn on the computer and only

require a small amount of memory. These graphics are editable.

3. Audio- A multimedia application may require the use of speech, music, and sound effects.

These are called audio or sound element of multimedia. Audios are sounds that can be added and combined with all other media types in so many ways. An audio can function as a musical background to images and photographs, and even texts. Audio can either be analog and digital types. Analog audio or sound refers to the original sound signal. Computer stores the sound in digital form. Therefore, the sound used in the multimedia application is digital audio.

4. Video- The term video refers to the moving picture, accompanied by a sound like a

television picture. The video element of multimedia applications gives a lot of information in a small duration of time. Digital video is useful in the multimedia application for showing real-life objects. Videos have the highest performance demand on computer memory and the bandwidth if placed on the internet. Digital video files can be stored like any other files on the computer, and the quality of the video can still be maintained. The digital video files can be transferred within a computer network. The digital video clips can be edited easily.

5. Animation- Animation is the process of making a static image look like it is moving. The

animation is just a continuous series of still images that are displayed in a sequence. The place where images and photographs meet video material is where animation begins. The animation can be used effectively to attract attention. Animation also makes a presentation light and attractive. The animation is very popular in multimedia application. Animation files are small, compact, and easily transferable, which is one reason why they dominate the world of the Internet today.
