EASTER SUNDAY – APRIL 4, 2021

Last line on next page.
Throughout the bulletin, assembly responses are printed in bold type. GREETING
Alleluia! Christ is risen!
Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia!
Th e grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
And also with you.
PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray.
God of mercy, we no longer look for Jesus among the dead, for he is alive and has become the Lord of life. Increase in our minds and hearts the risen life we share with Christ, and help us to grow as your people toward the fullness of eternal life with you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
WORD AND PRAYER
First Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:1-11
1Now I would remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which
you in turn received, in which also you stand, 2through which also you are being saved, if you hold
fi rmly to the message that I proclaimed to you—unless you have come to believe in vain. 3For I handed on to you as of fi rst importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died
for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, 4and that he was buried, and that he was raised
on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, 5and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the
twelve. 6Th en he appeared to more than fi ve hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of
whom are still alive, though some have died. 7Th en he appeared to James, then to all the
apos-tles. 8Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. 9For I am the least of the apostles,
unfi t to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10But by the grace of God
I am what I am, and his grace toward me has not been in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them—though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. 11Whether then it
was I or they, so we proclaim and so you have come to believe. After the reading:
Th e word of the Lord Th anks be to God.
Psalm 118 Choral Setting Croushurn
Gospel: John 20:1-18
Th is is the holy gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord.
1Early on the fi rst day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and
saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. 2So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the
other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “Th ey have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” 3Th en Peter and the other disciple set out
and went toward the tomb. 4Th e two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and
reached the tomb fi rst. 5He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he
did not go in. 6Th en Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen
wrappings lying there, 7and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen
wrap-pings but rolled up in a place by itself. 8Th en the other disciple, who reached the tomb fi rst, also
went in, and he saw and believed; 9for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise
11But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the
tomb; 12and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at
the head and the other at the feet. 13Th ey said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said
to them, “Th ey have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14When
she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” Supposing
him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in
Hebrew, “Rabbouni!” (which means Teacher). 17Jesus said to her, “Do not hold on to me, because I
have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ” 18Mary Magdalene went and announced to
the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”; and she told them that he had said these things to her. After the reading:
Th e gospel of the Lord. Praise to you O Christ.

STATEMENT OF FAITH • NICENE CREED
Let us now confess our faith, using the words of the Nicene Creed.
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucifi ed under Pontius Pilate; he suff ered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorifi ed, who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION
Alive in the risen Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit, we bring our prayers before God who promises to hear us and answer in steadfast love.
A brief silence.
Praise to you for your power revealed in the resurrection! Fill your church around the world with the power of your love that is stronger than death. Send us to tell the good news wherever death holds sway. Hear us, O God.
Praise to you for your life at work in the resurrection! Fill all of creation with your life. Bring it to blossom and fl ourish; use it to remind us of your persistent grace. Cultivate our care for what you have made. Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.
Praise to you for the peace made possible in the resurrection! Fill the nations with your peace. Give protection to those who live or work in danger. Grant wisdom to those who lead nations and com-munities. Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.
Praise to you for the hope of the resurrection! Fill all in need with hope: those who are afraid or confused, those who are sick or suff ering, those who are dying, and those who grieve, especially those we name now in our hearts... Give strength to medical personnel and caretakers. Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.
Here other intercessions may be off ered.
Praise to you for your faithfulness revealed in the resurrection! Fill us with trust, that we join with all who have gone before us in proclaiming: “your mercy endures forever!” Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.
In the hope of new life in Christ, we raise our prayers to you, trusting in your never-ending good-ness and mercy; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Let us pray now as Jesus has taught us:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

CARING CONVERSATIONS
Discuss in your home, small group, or use for personal reflec ons:
x What event have you experienced that le you speechless?
x What do you think it was like for Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James to stand before an angel at the empty tomb and receive awesome yet unbelievable news?
x The women le the tomb and said nothing to anyone. Why do you think they were afraid?
DEVOTIONS
Read: Mark 16:1-8.
Which is harder to believe: that Jesus rose from the dead or that the Gospel of Mark ends with the words, “they said nothing to any one, for they were afraid”? In fact, later Scripture text copiers were so dismayed by the original ending that they added more verses. It just didn’t make sense that the original text seemed so bleak. Instead of saying to the world, “Christ is risen, alleluia,” they leave commi ed to say nothing for they were afraid. Perhaps part of the Gospel message is the realiza on that our human frailty will always get in the way. What is evident is that the message did get out. We are reflec ng on that message now. In the midst of human frailty and failures what we celebrate on Easter Sunday is that God wins and con nues to win by delivering on God’s promises no ma er what. Alleluia, we as Jesus’ followers have a ministry to do for the world because Jesus rose from the dead. Yes, we may be imperfect workers, but the promise s ll holds true and we s ll have good news to tell the world. Alleluia, Jesus has been raised, is loose in the world, and is out ahead of us now. “[Jesus] is going ahead of you to [name your own des na on]; there you will see him, just as he told you” (v. 7). How does knowing that Jesus goes ahead of you wherever you go impact your life as a follower?
Pray: God of glory and might, we give you thanks for the resurrected Christ who walks with
us daily. Amen. Alleluia.
