2.5 Lords and Ladies During Feudal Times

What responsibilities did lords have in the feudal system?

Lords were responsible for managing and defending their manors and acting as judges. Some lords held posts in the king’s government. In times of war, lords fought for

their own monarchs (and higher lords) in or at least supplied them with soldiers.

What was the role of noblewomen in the feudal system?

Besides fighting, noblewomen had all the duties lords had: running estates, sitting as judges on manor courts, and sending their knights to war. Noblewomen

were responsible for raising and training their children (and of other noble families). They were also responsible for

2.6 Knights During Feudal Times

What responsibilities did knights have in the feudal system? Knights were expected to be loyal to their church and lord, to be fair, and to protect the helpless.

What was the code of chivalry? What stages did a boy go through to become a knight?

The code of chivalry was the set of rules of behavior that all knights were expected to live by, including bravery, loyalty, and respect for women. A boy started training for knighthood by becoming a page, where he learned skills such as how to ride a horse and how to sing. After seven years, he became a squire and learned how to fight as a warrior. A deserving squire was made a knight in his early 20s at a special ceremony.

Clergy’s (Monk or Nun) Tasks

You are one of the very few people who can read and write!! You must write a sermon to share with the peasants. You must write your sermon in cursive on a scroll. The sermon should be a lesson about one of the following:

being kind to enemies

to be selfless and share your wealth with the church

– to work hard in the fields because hard work a way to dedicate yourself to God

(12)

Serfs’ Tasks

You will work the fields to produce food for the manor. Sit under the table to work

- Serfs, you are not free – you must hold on to the table leg at all time because you “tied” to your manor!

- Peasants, you are free – you do not have to hold on the table leg. You must color each food token – each must have at least two colors

Tradesperson's

Tasks

Once you receive a food token, it must

be skillfully cut out. Luckily, you will be

allowed modern-day scissors, not

traditional medieval tools.

Knight’s Tasks

• Consult with your Lord/Lady about your manor, and then create your heraldry (your manor’s coat of arms)!

Google “heraldry symbols and meanings” and select the option called “Heraldry Symbols & Meanings, Coat of Arms Symbols A-D” (near the top)

• Then, you will need to practice your fine fighting skills to prepare for battle and for festivals to celebrate the Kingdom and monarch. Practice your

Nobles’ (Lord or Lady) Tasks

Come to court and speak with the Monarch (Mrs. Gray)

regarding taxes (in the form of food) that your Manor must

pay to the kingdom. You will roll the dice to determine your

tax amounts. You will return to your manor and retrieve the

payment from the food produced by the serfs and bring it

back to the Monarch. Tardy payments could result in extra

taxes as determined by the Monarch.

(17)

Festival Day

To honor the Monarch, all the manors will come together to watch the

knights compete in games of skill.

Before the festival, the clergy (monk or nun) must read their sermon

for inspiration!

Each noble (lord/lady) will bring their taxes and a gift of food (or serfs)

to win the favor of the monarch and get the best seats at the festival – the leftovers go back to your people.

When the knight from your manor is competing, cheer them on! Serfs

(and everyone else) from the attack!

You may use your tables and chairs to create a

be careful).

KNIGHTS ONLY:

use your history textbook to protect the

people from the manor from the attack – make sure to

protect your Noble first! ONLY knights can fight back.
