The Great Gatsby
Skeleton Essay: Due Tuesday, April 8
that 11:59 PM
essay question:
How can we see F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel
The Great Gatsby
as a commentary on the American
Dream? In other words, how is Jay Gatsby’s quest to win the heart of Daisy a metaphor for the
ultimate downfall of one’s dreams of success?
background & context:
alcolm Gladwell and Russell H. Conwell, separated by nearly 100 years, offer up an interesting commentary on the plausibility of achieving the American Dream. Gladwell, in chapter one of his book Outliers, argues that one’s success is practically pre-determined by their up-bringing. Conwell, meanwhile, discusses in his speech “Acres of Diamonds” the causes and effects of becoming obsessed with a single dream.
Use these sources to examine how Gatsby’s dream is truly a metaphor for the demise of the American Dream.
prompt vocabulary:
commentary: an expression of opinions or offering of explanations about an event or situation.
quest: a long or difficult search for something.

Create a complex argument (thesis) that will guide your body paragraphs.
Develop a claim for each body paragraph that connects to your thesis and advances your argument.
Select and synthesize (combine) evidence from appropriate sources to meaningfully support your ideas.
Blend all quotations into your own writing and use proper MLA parenthetical citations.
Explain your reasoning for each piece of evidence in such a way that you provide strong analysis/commentary that examines and elaborates on the ideas stated in your proof.
