Summaries in Interlingua

B EGINNING with this issue of PEDIAiiucs

the Executive Board of the Academy

and the Editorial Board have authorized a

trial use of Interlingua as a medium for pro-viding abstracts of articles in Pimimics for the benefit of those of our readers not famil-ian with English. At the present time there are more than 500 subscribers to PErnAmIcs

in the Latin American countries and an

equal number in all other foreign countries.

Of course the journal is read by many

per-sons in foreign countries who are not

sub-scribers, but make use of library copies. In

view of the steady growth of the number of

subscribers in countries which do not use

the Spanish language and because Spanish

is not employed in a uniform and universal

fashion in the Latin American countries, we

have felt that Intenlingua might be more

serviceable for the purpose of preparing

abstracts for all of our foreign readers. Interlingua is a planned pan-Occidental

language. Its material is drawn from

pre-cisely the source on which Occidental

sci-ence has always relied most heavily in form-ing its technical terms. This is not a

refer-ence to Greek and Latin as such, even though many learned neobogisms seem to be

constructed of elements taken over bodily

from those classical languages. The point

to be stressed is rather that such neologisms

are viable only because they join up in all

our national tongues with a vast stock of

congenial forms. Indeed, all the occidental

languages consist of 2 layers of elements:

the one popular, autochthonous,

idiosyn-cratic; the other learned, resulting from the

supranational homogeneity of occidental

culture, and shared by its neighbors. Span-ish hombre, French chaleur, English house, German Druck might exemplify the

idiosyn-cratic layer; Spanish homicida, French

Impres-sionismus are terms shared potentially or

actually by all neighboring tongues.

lan-guage, the terms common to the languages

ger-of the Western world constitute Interlingua which owes its extra-Occidental usefulness to the fact that science and technology have

carried its concepts and forms to the four

corners of the globe.

Interbingua was evolved in the linguistic laboratories of the International Auxiliary

Language Association in New York City.

After the publication of a fundamental

Interlingua-English Dictionary and a

com-pbete Interlingua Reference Grammar, this

Association entrusted the task of promoting

the practical utilization of Interlingua to

Science Service which organized for the

purpose its Interlingua Division with offices

at 80 East 11th Street, New York 3, New

York.

The Interlingua Division of Science

Serv-ice began operations as of April 1, 1953. It

publishes a monthly Interbingua bulletin of

scientific news reports and supplies editorial assistance in the preparation of every kind

of occasional Interlingua publication. Its

major interest, however, is concentrated in

the utilization of Interlingua in summaries of the kind now being tested in PEDIATRICS.

In the course of 2 years the Interlingua

Division of Science Service has introduced

its plan of Interlingua summaries in 12

medical journals. These include Blood,

Cir-culotion, American Heart Journal, Archivos

Peruanos de PatologIa , ClInica, Diabetes,

Annals of Internal Medicine, Clinical

Or-thopaedics, and others.

The theory underlying the plan of Inter-lingua summaries is simply that the shared

pan-Occidental character of the language

gives it simultaneously the appearance of an

“internationalization” of each one of the

contributing languages. By agreeing to a

very slight inconvenience scientists of van-ous native speech forms and varied linguis-tic education have in it a common language capable of giving them access to identical

Pro iste fin Science Service organisava su

Division de Interlingua con bureaus a 80

Le Division de Intenlingua cornenciava su activitates le 1 de april 1953. Ilbo publica in interlingua un bulletin mensual de novas

totaling in each some 90,000 words. A simi-lan plan was followed with a considerably

smaller number of papers at the Symposium

on Adrenal Function in Infants and

Chil-dren at Syracuse in November, 1954.

Intenlingua will be judged by the practi-cal services it can perform. If at this early

date a summary of its reception can be

given, it seems that especially in Latin

America its objectives have been clearly

understood.

The present arrangements provide for the

use of abstracts in Interlingua in PEDIATRICS

through the October issue of this year. We

shall be anxious to learn of the reaction of

our readers to the use of Interlingua and

of their desire for continuation of abstracts in this medium. It is particularly important

that we hear from those who wish this use

of Interlingua to be continued, as we will

not have to urge those who object to express

themselves. Some means shall be sought for

collecting a representative expression of

opinion.
