National Research Centers of Excellence

Asia Pacific Ocean Research Center (APORC)

NSYSU’s “Aim for the Top University Research Project” framework is divided into two groups composed of the two Top University research centers of excellence.

NSYSU is the only top university in the country to establish the College of Marine Sciences. Since the commencement of “Aim for the Top University Plan” in 2006, Ministry of Education has supported NSYSU to establish APORC as a center of excellence in ocean research. The APORC has engaged in researches in global change, marine biodiversity, ocean acidification, marine drugs and biotechnology, marine industry applications and marine affairs and governance.

1. APORC outranks all major Asian Universities in marine chemistry and ranked 4th in marine natural products globally.

2. AsTheAPORC leads in the country in marine instrument design and manufacture, with strong industrial application. With undersea capacity, the APORC Scientists extracted successfully methane hydrate samples from the Taiwanese coastal water. 3. As the portal of the South China Sea research, the

Dongsha Atoll Research Station”, which is affiliated with the APORC, has been established to devote to marine biogeochemistry and biodiversity. A program to restore the giant clam in Dongsha has been carried out.

Key Research Centers

Massive MIMO Antenna System Research Center (MMASRC)

 MIMO array techniques in the smartphone,

 RF techniques for beamforming and related key components, and

 baseband techniques for simple MIMO signal processing solutions.

The research publications by the center has gained recognition as world class and ranked first in number of publications and citations in the period from 2004-2014.

CFCNC is a research center comprising of several established laboratories including the Taiwan consortium of emergent crystalline materials laboratory, disorder metallic glass laboratory, crystalline and non-crystalline memory device laboratory, and order soft matter laboratory. Led by National Chair Professor Jacob Huang, the center includes national award-winning and academics and nationally recognized scholars from NSYSU’s Physics, Chemistry, Materials and Optoelectronic Science and Mechanical Engineering departments.

The center’s current research is divided into three research groups: 1) preparation of crystalline and non-crystalline complex, 2) characterization of crystalline and non-crystalline complex, and application of crystalline and non-crystalline complex.

This world-leading research center in the field of mobile antenna is involved in the cutting edge research of the next generation (5G) mobile communication technologies. Using the Massive MIMO antenna system as a key research focus, the center’s research topics include:

Center of Humanities Innovation and Social Practice

Translational Medical Science and Technology Center (MSTC)

The core value of our center is “social practice.” Viewing from the angle of native cultures, this center aims to collaborate with the local community, understand the changes in culture, and explore innovative future social lives; these activities can hence fully implement the university’s social impacts on the society and further facilitate social justice. The center comprises of three interdisciplinary projects: Deep Economy and Social Entrepreneuring, Marginal Communities, and Migrancy and Material Culture.

The Center established a core research theme of “Advanced Molecular Detection” with four focus areas (as indicated in the graph below). The Center supports multidisciplinary collaboration with professional experts from fields of marine sciences, biomedicine, chemistry, mathematics, electrical engineering, information, mechanics, and physics.

Key Research Centers

Pressing attention is placed on early prevention, early carcinoma diagnosis, early virus infectious inspection, and food safety detection. In pursuit of a comprehensive research plan, the Center collaborates internationally in translation medicine, drug development, clinical instrumentation and life simulation, food safety detection, and high-speed screening.
