Developing our employees and leaders in times of transition has never been more important. Our Corporate Learning Centre is dedicated to fostering a culture of learning that inspires and supports engagement, growth and development for you, your team and the public we serve. We recognize that learning takes place in the classroom, online and in your teams. The sharing of knowledge, ideas and experience is critical to our success. In the coming year, we are excited to be making greater use of the many options for learning that are available. We also recognize that the challenge of leadership has changed in significant ways. Orientation Programs
We want to get you off to the best start! Orientation builds pride in public service, and an understanding of how Govern-ment best serves the citizens of Nova Scotia. Orientation quickly allows you to become a contributing member of your new team. Additionally we recognize that new managers (and experienced managers who are new to government) re-quire additional skills and knowledge specific to the govern-ment context in order to successfully lead their teams. We are pleased to offer our employees three programs to assist you with your transition:
CORPORATE NEW EMPLOYEE ORIENTATION PROGRAM gives you an overview of the workings of government along with specific information to assist anyone who is new to government. This program incorporates a blend of online and classroom learning.
MANAGER QUICKSTART PROGRAM is just in time learn-ing which provides you with basic information about your responsibilities as a manager. This program is a blend of e-learning and interactive webinars to ensure you can get key information early in your new role and participate from wherever you may be located. See page 31 for more detailed information.
MANAGER ORIENTATION AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM is an in-depth certificate program where you gather to meet colleagues in similar roles and hear important information from government experts. You will build essential skills and knowledge in core management functions such as recruit-ment, labour relations and much more. This program uses a classroom format to allow you to share your experience and promote relationship building with your peers. See page 35 for more detailed information.

In today’s complex and ever-changing world, it has become necessary to manage your own career. Yet how do you do this? And where do you start? Designed as a series of interconnected modules with practical exercises between sessions, the Self-Managed Career Program provides valuable tools, guidance and time dedicated to developing your career. You will engage in self-assessment to identify your interests and strengths, and discover new ways to develop your career in a meaningful way. You’ll also learn how to create an effective development plan with attainable action steps, and to illustrate your skills and experience through a portfolio. By completing this program, you will gain a clearer vision of your career goals and the skills to take ownership of your career journey.

Retirement Planning

This two-day course is for employees of the Nova Scotia Government who wish to effectively plan for retirement to ensure financial security, maintain a comfortable lifestyle, and prepare for a period of adjustment that should not be underestimated. Many retirees may live one third or more of their lives in retirement. Therefore, it’s important to understand your options and make informed decisions about your future. This seminar is a ‘must’ for those too busy to think about tomorrow but believe that good planning is the key to a successful retirement.

Successful communicators are efficient and effective. They get the job done quickly and well. Effective communication, whether in writing or orally, must be understandable, relevant, and concise. This course will look at how you can write and speak in a way that commands both attention and interest. It will explore how to engage and motivate readers and listeners while helping to achieve your communication goal and build goodwill.
The seven principles of effective communication will be reviewed and discussed within the context of the provincial government. Recommended templates for the four types of communication done in the workplace – routine news, good news, bad news, and persuasive communication – will be provided. Participants will also try their hand at an elevator pitch.

Effective Facilitation
Skills For Work Groups

Facilitation is an art, science, craft and profession. It has been called the “core competency of the 21st century” and is often the skill most directly linked to team and organizational success. This one-day course is designed to give those who facilitate meetings, problem solving sessions and community engagement sessions the opportunity to develop important facilitation skills – from designing good group process to facilitating the process and transcribing the results. Beyond Conflict

Most of us deal with problems and conflicts at least some of the time in ways that do not produce optimal results. The causes of organizational conflicts vary, but they generally stem from basic differences in the way individuals and their work teams perceive their relationships and carry out their work. You can learn skills to achieve better outcomes with short and long term decision making, problem solving, and resolving conflict. This skill set enhances your ability to work well with others and to more easily reach agreement with the people working around you.

Regardless of our roles, we all have a responsibility to encourage and create a more inclusive workplace culture. This includes developing an understanding of key concepts and experiences related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) communities. You will learn about the language of the LGBTIQ communities. Learners will delve into different ways of looking at sex, gender and gender identity, and sexual orientation leaving with a new understanding of old concepts. People taking this course should expect to explore and challenge assumptions and privileges and leave with a different understanding of how this affects experiences in the workplace and at home. Whether your goal is to provide better service to a growing and diverse public, or to interact in a more affirming manner with colleagues and the public, expect to leave with greater understanding of LGBTIQ communities.

Becoming an Ally is part of the Positive Spaces Initiative training for those who are interested in leading and inspiring change in their workplaces to provide safe, inclusive, and affirming spaces and experiences for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ) employees and the public. This course challenges learners to go beyond recognizing oppression and inequality and to examine and develop collaborative ways of challenging and changing these issues. Learners will explore what it means to be a Positive Spaces Ally and how to put the knowledge, skills, and attitudes into practice.

The Duty to Consult
With the Mi’kmaq of
Nova Scotia

As a result of Supreme Court of Canada decisions released in 2004 and 2005, Provincial and Federal governments have a duty to consult with Aboriginal peoples when contemplating decisions that may adversely impact established and asserted Aboriginal or Treaty rights. The Office of Aboriginal Affairs is offering an intensive, one-day training session on The Duty to Consult with the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia. The training will include a historical overview; consultation from a legal and practical perspective;
explanation and application of the Nova Scotia Consultation Terms of Reference; best consultation practices; and concludes with a hands-on, practical consultation screening exercise on real-life cases involving consultation.

COURSE LENGTH: 4 days PRICE: $1250
This course will provide participants with an understanding of the role of evaluation in program and public sector management and the ability to construct and undertake an evaluation. Participants will leave with an evaluation framework ready to be implemented. In previous works, the evaluations produced by participants have been used internally by government departments or as the bases of RFPs for external evaluation. This knowledge will enable participants to engage in internal evaluation or provide oversight for external evaluation contracts.
CONTENT
• Learn the foundational aspects of an evaluation: Program Description, Program Theory; Logic Models, Theory of Change and Performance Measure
• Instruction and discussion on all components of an evaluation framework – the evaluation question, various approaches that can be taken, data sources, design for data collection, data collection methods, analysis, the legislative context, scheduling, budgeting, and a communication plan (possibly an implementation plan)

These courses range from introductory level orientation and training for staff who are new to procurement activities in Government to advanced courses for individuals who spend themajority of their time planning, executing and managing procurement strategies and contracts. The procurement website provides an outline of the training that is
recommended, and in some cases required, for individuals involved in various levels of procurement activities. Many of these courses are self-directed and available on-line. However, some of the courses, particularly those that are advanced, will be delivered in person. Every effort will be made to provide courses on a regular basis to interested staff. FOUR KEY TYPES OF TRAINING COURSES

• Intermediate: intended for all staff of procurement services to create a solid foundation from which to work, however can also be for staff outside of procurement services.

We all have a role to play in creating a Respectful Workplace. In this engaging course, participants will develop the skills they need to keep their workplaces free from offensive behaviour. The course is available in two formats. Participants can choose either a half-day classroom session incorporating hands on exercises and concrete examples, or an online module that allows you to learn at your own pace. Participants will learn how to identify offensive behaviour and what options are available to them if they witness or experience it. By the end of the session, participants will have the skills they need to help maintain a Respectful Workplace.

• Understand how to recognize offensive behaviour • Learn how to identify the three types of offensive behaviour: harassment, sexual harassment and discrimination
