Thunderbird Executive MBA

(2)

In today’s interconnected world, it is critical for successful business leaders to not only know how globalization affects their business, but also to have the specialized skills to take full advantage of global opportunities.

The Thunderbird Executive MBA program is designed with the modern business leader in mind – one who seeks to be as successful in the Silicon Valley as in Shanghai or as effective in Helsinki as Hyderabad. The Thunderbird Executive MBA, with its unique global curriculum, exceptional faculty and collaborative environment, allows students to acquire knowledge and develop skills from both their peers and their instructors that can be applied immediately on the job. The return on investment begins on day one.

“ Since its founding in 1946, Thunderbird’s focus has

been on teaching international management

— the

intricacies of doing business in a multicultural marketplace — and

preparing you for the challenges of globalization. Classes are taught by

faculty adept in working across cultures, fostering the global mindset

needed to be a leader and a responsible corporate citizen of the world.”

“ Based purely on ratings for skills, the top program

belonged to Thunderbird School of Global Management.

Graduates gave it high marks for instruction in strategic thinking, general leadership

and the ability to work across multiple functional areas.”

Global isn’t a class. It’s a mindset.

Thunderbird is a member of the Executive MBA Council and is accredited by:

North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA), the primary accrediting agency granting institutional accreditation for schools in this region of the United States.

The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB-International), the accrediting association for schools of business.

One program. Two cohorts.

Thunderbird’s Executive MBA program is global in both concept and practice, and consists of two student cohorts. One is based in the United States at Thunderbird’s fl agship campus in Phoenix, Arizona. Switzerland is home to the other cohort and operates in cooperation with The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Thunderbird’s partner institution in Geneva. The two cohorts follow the same curriculum, with shared learning courses interspersed throughout the program, providing ample opportunities for collaboration, networking and partnership. This feature is unique, as most working professional programs tend to be more local in focus.

Truly global cohorts

On average, Thunderbird’s U.S.-based Executive MBA cohort consists of students from at least 14 different countries. In the three most recent U.S.-based cohorts, students’ countries of citizenship or expatriate assignment included:

Worth the commute

Thunderbird’s unparalleled program and delivery model make it an appealing option for commuters. In fact, approximately 30% of Executive MBA-US students commute from across the country to attend this top-ranked program. Students in the last three U.S. cohorts commuted from the following states:

2 • Belgium • Brazil • Bulgaria • Canada • Chile • China • Colombia • Ecuador • Egypt • France • Germany • Ghana • India • Italy • Jordan • Malaysia • Mexico • Mongolia • Pakistan • Panama • Poland • Russia • S. Korea • Taiwan • Ukraine • Venezuela • Vietnam • United States

“There are many great business schools in the DC area. Despite this, I chose to commute

cross-country to Thunderbird.

Actually, there are certain effi ciencies that come with being a commuter student.

I was able to take advantage of my travel time by catching up on homework, reading and preparing for tests. I have

never regretted my decision to commute for my Executive MBA and would do it all over again in a heartbeat!”

Ideal for today’s busy global executive

For the busy executive, embarking on an MBA program mid-career is an exciting prospect. At the same time, such a goal requires planning, personal motivation and an optimal program design – one that allows the student to fully participate without radically interrupting his or her personal or professional life in the process. The Thunderbird Executive MBA delivers on this promise and is delivered in a format that minimizes and optimizes each student’s time away from work or family to ensure an incomparable and manageable learning experience.

Designed around your work. Designed around your life.

• Enjoy program formats designed to be convenient for working professionals and commuters* from beyond our locations: alternate weekends (Friday and Saturday) in the United States; week-long modules every 6-8 weeks in Europe. • Complete the U.S.-based program in 21 months or the Europe-based program

in 19 months (delivery method accounts for difference in program duration). • Experience one common global curriculum delivered in sequential format, so

each course builds on the next to enrich and reinforce the experience. • Gain senior-level exposure to business trends and best practices in core

business disciplines – accounting, fi nance, marketing, strategy, leadership, entrepreneurship – each framed within a global context.

• Learn “soft skills” for successful engagement in global business such as cross-cultural negotiations and communications, nuances of regional business environments and even foreign-language skills.

• Enjoy multiple opportunities for cross-cohort learning, including a joint online class and shared fi eld seminars in a variety of global locations, which provide exposure to local leaders, business trends, best practices and expanded networking opportunities. Field seminars are currently held in Brazil, Russia, India and China, but destinations are subject to change.

• Experience outcomes-based learning delivered by Thunderbird’s global thought leaders – internationally acclaimed faculty who are at the forefront of their respective disciplines, both consulting and conducting research worldwide.

* Accommodations are included for students during orientation week, international fi eld seminar trips and the fi nal module on Thunderbird’s Arizona campus. For U.S. cohort members, affordable, on-campus accommodations are available at the Thunderbird Executive Inn during regular class weekends.

cultural, economic and

Collaborate to graduate

Global business today, especially at the executive level, is characterized increasingly by cooperative and team-based management across cultures and borders. There is no more ideal place to prepare for this reality than at Thunderbird. In fact, over time, our executive cohorts have coined the phrase “collaborate to graduate” as an apt description of how the program seamlessly promotes both individual achievement and collective successes within a supportive and team-based program.

The world is your classroom

With Thunderbird’s Executive MBA program, we bring the world into your classroom and your classroom into the world. Students in both the U.S.- and Europe-based cohorts have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel together on two international fi eld seminars. Destinations for the fi eld seminars are currently offered in the emerging markets of the BRIC nations (Brazil, Russia, India and China),* the growth markets of today and tomorrow. Paired with our location in Geneva, the epicenter of NGOs and

International Organizations, we offer students hands-on exposure in the most relevant global areas. These travel seminars are designed to provide students with a broad business, economic, political and cultural overview of various important regions of the world, and include industry visits, top-level speakers and vital cultural exposure. During the degree program, the two cohorts also visit one another’s home campuses (in Arizona and Geneva) for joint courses and further cross-cultural and professional interaction.

* Field seminar locations are subject to change.

Real-world curriculum for real-world leaders

Thunderbird’s Executive MBA program features a comprehensive “tripartite” curriculum designed to provide broad, thorough instruction in core business components as they apply in the global context – as well as cross-cultural, political, economic and regional business studies. The curriculum includes:

Executive MBA classmates network during a shared module in Geneva, Switzerland

“One of the unique aspects of the Thunderbird Executive MBA is the

diversity in the classroom - not just among the cohort, but among the faculty.

Thunderbird’s faculty are from around the world and have lived and worked in countless nations.

They bring their cultural and professional experiences into the classroom —

and, as a result, students leave with real, applicable insight into global business.“

— Anne Stringfellow, Ph.D.

Associate Professor of Global Marketing and Academic Director, Executive MBA Programs

Global Business

Thunderbird’s renowned faculty bring their real-world and academic experience and contacts into the classroom to teach the fundamentals of global business – the hard skills that enable leaders to graduate with a fi rm foundation in accounting, fi nance,

management, strategy, leadership, entrepreneurship and marketing. All courses are taught from a truly global perspective, providing students with the knowledge and skills to put these fundamentals to work in any setting worldwide.

International Studies

Conducting business in a global setting requires more than traditional business skills. It takes a broad understanding of the political, economic and social environments in any given culture – and Thunderbird’s Executive MBA program provides students with that solid background. Professors who have lived and worked in global locations share their knowledge with students, offering unparalleled insight into how business operations and international relations go hand in hand.

Culture and Language

Thunderbird’s language and culture curriculum gives students an extraordinary competitive edge in today’s challenging global environment. Not only do students emerge with the hard skills and international relations experience to lead successfully, but also with the cultural sensitivity and awareness to interact in diverse situations with dexterity. To further under-score the value of cross-cultural understanding, Executive MBA students must demonstrate a profi ciency in a second language to be eligible for graduation.

“ I don’t know of many institutions other than Thunderbird

that provide engagement with so many different

cultures and countries...

I have been a part of culturally and

academically diverse groups my whole life - but being among my

Thunderbird classmates I felt as though maybe I hadn’t really seen

— Islamshah Amlani ’ 11, Ph.D., Business Consultant

Students praise the transformational nature of the Thunderbird Executive MBA program and experience. They enter the program as distinguished and successful professionals and leave as broadened business leaders and globally skilled practitioners.

Thunderbird’s Personal Leadership Development Program plays a major role in this transformational journey. This unique program is designed to enhance each student’s leadership skills and optimize their Executive MBA experience through directed introspection, self-assessment, peer feedback and coaching. As a result of these activities, students discover and learn to articulate their short- and long-term

professional goals, as well as create a personal leadership development plan that will guide their path forward after graduation.

With the personal growth that comes from earning a Thunderbird Executive MBA, students are optimally positioned to take full advantage of opportunities for professional advancement. Whether graduates wish to advance within their current organization or change direction, the Thunderbird Executive MBA program prepares them to stand above the competition.

To allow graduates to fully leverage these skill sets, Thunderbird partners with students to provide comprehensive career development services during their program and beyond. In addition to personal coaching sessions, students receive a wealth of support, information and resources in the areas of career management and professional development, allowing them to successfully grow and manage their careers.

Instant worldwide connections

The world is made even more accessible to Thunderbird Executive MBA students thanks to the school’s international alumni network of more than 40,000 professionals in over 145 countries.

From day one, students become a part of this far-reaching global network, providing them with professional and personal contacts in virtually any location they choose to engage. In 2010, Thunderbird’s robust and far-reaching alumni network earned the school The Economist’s

#1 “potential to network” ranking.

Return on investment

Pursuing an MBA as a mid-career professional is a strategic investment of time, resources, personal energy and engagement. While each student’s reasons for pursuing an MBA degree are as varied and diverse as the cohort members themselves, a return on investment – however it may be defi ned by the individual student – is consistently deemed of critical importance.

Here Thunderbird delivers remarkable and measurable value. Our executive students fi nish the program as stronger, more enlightened and skilled leaders with an enhanced capacity to affect the overall business of their organizations – and to make a difference. This return on investment begins after the very fi rst class where skills learned can be applied immediately.

A further testament to the strength, quality and value of the program – and the esteem in which it is held by its graduates – lies in our recent ranking. Thunderbird was ranked the #3 Executive MBA program in the

world by The Wall Street Journal in 2010, with our alumni and management

skills scores ranking #1 against our global competition.
