 Understanding and implementing equitable opportunities for both men and women.

 Recognizing that excellence in intercollegiate athletics may bring local, regional and national exposure to the University.  Displaying a high level of ethics, integrity, fairness, and respect for diversity.

 Student-athletes being leaders when involved in an extra-curricular activity and in all behaviors on and off campus.  Student-athletes being courteous and well-mannered when representing the student-athlete's activity and the university.

Davenport University Athletic Affiliation

Davenport University is currently affiliated with the NAIA for all varsity athletic programs. The NAIA, headquartered in Kansas City, Mo., is a governing body of small athletics programs that are dedicated to character-driven intercollegiate athletics.

Since 1937, the NAIA has administered programs and championships in proper balance with the overall college educational experience.

The student-athlete is the center of all NAIA experiences. Each year more than 60,000 student-athletes have the opportunity to play college sports at NAIA member institutions.

Davenport University’s conference affiliation for our varsity sports is the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC). The WHAC was formed in 1992 and currently is home to 12 member schools with institutions from Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. Davenport University joined the conference in 2005.

As noted earlier, Davenport is in the process of applying for membership in NCAA Division II. NCAA Division II is a collection of 300 NCAA colleges and universities that provide student-athletes the opportunity to compete at a high level of scholarship athletics while excelling in the classroom and fully engaging in the broader campus experience. This balance, in which student-athletes are recognized for their academic success, athletics contributions and campus/community involvement, is at the heart of the Division II philosophy and aligns with Davenport’s mission and vision for athletics.

Davenport has been invited to join the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) as a provisional member upon acceptance into the NCAA Division II Membership process. Full GLIAC membership will be awarded upon acceptance into the NCAA Division II membership process. The GLIAC, founded in 1972, has been a leader in the advancement and promotion of intercollegiate athletics for men and women for 44 years. It is the athletic department’s expectations that all student-athletes use this time effectively and act in a manner that positively reflects our athletic department and your team.

All student-athletes must complete their mandatory study tables each week and assume all responsibility if hours are not complete. Exceptions may occur in unique circumstances designated by the Associate Director of Athletics and/or athletic administration. Coaches and athletic administrators will be notified on any failure to comply with study table policies. Disciplinary actions will be taken as a result of any single or a combination of violations of study table policies. The following are study table policies:

 All student-athletes with a cumulative GPA below a 3.0 must attend 3 hour per week (two 90-minute sessions). No exceptions will be granted to this rule.

 A week begins on Sunday and ends on Friday. All study table hours must be completed by Saturday.

 Student-Athletes must attend their arranged study table time unless approved by Director of Tutoring after approval by team (athletic) coach.

 All freshman are required to attend for their entire first year.

 All transfers must attend for the first semester only assuming they have a cumulative GPA above a 3.0 after their first semester.

Only active work with a tutor is considered as a replacement for study table time. The student-athlete must be actively engaged with a tutor for the time to count.

 Study table hours will be allowed at a maximum of 90-minute increments. Anything above 90 minutes in one sitting will be counted as 90 minutes towards study table requirements.

 Personal computers will be allowed but may only be used for academic purposes (no Facebook, Twitter, instant messaging, etc.)

 You will respect all staff, academic coaches and tutors, their requests, and any disciplinary decisions. Phones must be turned off and out of sight. All academic coaches have the authority to ask the student-athlete to leave at any time due to violation of study table policies.

(9)

9 Disciplinary Actions for Violation of Study Table Policies:

Academic Integrity

Student-Athletes experience additional academic pressures in their pursuit of maintaining a balance between academics and athletics. Even so, academic honesty is fundamental to the activities and principles of a university. All members of the academic community must be confident that a person’s work has been responsibly and honestly acquired, developed and presented. The assumption is that a student-athletes work is a fair representation of his/her actual ability, knowledge and skills that form the basis of institutional quality and the quality of its graduates.

Davenport University recognizes the principles of honesty and truth as fundamental to ethical business dealings and to a vibrant academic community of faculty and students. All members of an academic community shall be confident that each person's work has been responsibly and honorably acquired, developed and presented. The work that a student submits shall be a fair representation of his/her ability, knowledge and skill. The university expects students to respect and exhibit these principles as they form the basis of the quality of the institution and the quality of Davenport’s graduates. As stated in the Student Code of Conduct the university may discipline a student for academic dishonesty. Academic dishonesty is defined as any activity that tends to undermine the academic integrity of the institution.

For more information on the academic integrity policy listed in the Student Code of Conduct, visit Academic Integrity.

Attendance Policy

Davenport athletics follow the university policies for attendance. Regular attendance and active participation in classes are essential elements in the learning process. Students are expected to attend all class sessions beginning with and including the first class session. This practice has been shown to increase the success levels and retention of Davenport University students. For this reason, in all Foundations of Learning and 100 level courses, attendance will be reported on a daily basis until the last day to drop with a “W” grade for every semester and session.

If there is a conflict with a class and a scheduled competition, it is up to student-athlete to:

 Inform the professor one week in advance and provide an approved letter from the athletic department with details of absence.  Request from professor any work or assignments in advance.

 Be accountable for all work and/or assignments.

 Make arrangements for taking any examination affected by team travel.

 Provide both coaches and faculty with any last minute changes as soon as possible. Student-Athletes should avoid notifying the faculty and/or coaches during class or practice.

If there are any questions or concerns regarding class attendance, examinations or assignments, it is the responsibility of the student-athlete to contact their advisor or the Faculty Athletics Representative.

G. Champions of Character

Davenport University aligns itself with the NAIA Champions of Character Program and its five core values.

“The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character program is designed to instill an understanding of character values in sport and provide practical tools for student-athletes, coaches, and athletic administrators to use in modeling exemplary character traits. The NAIA developed the Champions of Character program in response to the growing problem of deteriorating standards of integrity in sports and society. At a time when all of sport has experienced increasingly inappropriate behavior by athletes, coaches, and fans, NAIA Champions of Character raises the standards for positive student-athlete development in athletics and academics. The NAIA Champions of Character program has established five core values that stretch well beyond the playing field. The NAIA identifies those core values as: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership. These character values help student-athletes and those associated with their development, make good choices in all aspects of their life and reflect the true spirit of competition.”

Champions of Character provides training for student-athletes and professional development for coaches and staff. The values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership are put into play and accounted for at NAIA schools.

H. NCAA Division II Strategic Positioning Platform

The NCAA Division II approach provides growth opportunities through academic achievement, learning in high-level athletic competition and development of positive societal attitudes in service to community. The balance and integration of these different areas of learning opportunity provide Division II student-athletes a path to graduation while cultivating a variety of skills and knowledge for life ahead.

The focal point of the NCAA Division II Philosophy is “Life in the Balance,” where student-athletes are recognized for their academic success, athletic contributions and community engagement. The following attributes, as highlighted in the Division II Strategic Positioning Platform are similar to the core values of the Champions of Character program::

Learning: Multiple opportunities to broaden knowledge and skills Balance: Emphasis on collective knowledge, integration of skills

Resourcefulness: Versatile skill set drawn from broad range of experiences Sportsmanship: Respect for fairness, courtesy; ethical conduct toward others Passion: Enthusiastic dedication and desire in effort

Service: Positive societal attitude through contributions to community

As an applicant for NCAA Division II membership, Davenport has embraced the NCAA Division II Philosophy and the Division’s Strategic Positioning Platform.

(13)

13 I. Drugs and Alcohol

The athletic department recognizes the use of alcohol and illegal drugs as a significant problem on college campuses and for many student-athletes. Their use results in negative effects on behavior, relationships, academic performance, and the overall learning environment. The use and misuse of these substances also affect athletic performance and team morale. Although we realize that problems with alcohol and other drugs are not confined to student-athletes, they are of special concern to us because of the high visibility and additional social pressures athletes often face as representatives of our institution.

Drug Policy

Student-Athletes must comply with applicable laws and rules related to controlled substances. Substance abuse includes but is not limited to the following and is prohibited: marijuana, cocaine, heroin, medical marijuana, prescription drugs, etc. In the best interests of student-athletes, coaches, staff and the university, abuse of "performance enhancing" drugs (steroids, human growth hormones etc.) are also prohibited. If there are questions or concerns regarding the use of any drug or medication, please contact the athletic trainers office prior to using such substance. Additional information can be found at NCAA Drug Testing website.

Drug Testing Policy

All student-athletes are required to sign a Drug Testing Consent Form before being allowed to participate in athletics at the university. This form allows for the Director of Athletics, Associate Director of Athletics, Assistant Director of Athletic(s), athletic trainer(s), or head coach(s) to request that a student-athlete be tested for alcohol and drug use at any time during the school year. A decision to conduct a non-random student-athlete alcohol or drug screen will be based on the university’s assessment of the overall circumstances that prompt consideration of whether to administer a screening test.

During each academic year, the university reserves the right to randomly select student-athletes from any team for drug testing at its discretion. Student-Athletes chosen for random drug testing will be notified by the head coach and must report to the designated test site at the assigned time. When called upon for drug testing, the student-athlete must provide his/her student ID and verify his/her presence, by signature, to the test administrator.

An alcohol or drug screen will presumptively involve a urine or saliva sample however, the university reserves to itself the right to collect blood, oral fluid, or hair follicle samples to determine compliance with this policy. All tests will be paid for by the university.

The submission of a compromised urine sample, as determined by the test administrator, is strictly prohibited.

Regarding insufficient quantity or temperature out of range:

After first attempt donor must stay and will be required to drink a maximum of 32 oz. of water or submit a saliva sample. If the donor cannot provide a sufficient amount of urine (30 ml) within 1 hour after the first attempt they will be required to visit the lab. If tampering is suspected the program administrator may order an observed test.

A student-athlete who refuses to take a drug test when requested or fails to show up on time for a scheduled drug test will be declared ineligible to participate in all athletics at the university until a specimen is collected and may be subject to further discipline. Once a student-athlete has submitted a specimen, he/she will remain eligible to participate in athletics at the university until the confirmed results of the drug test are secured by the athletic department. All results will remain in the student-athletes permanent file, except as otherwise required by law. The following university staff will be the only ones contacted about the results of the drug test in addition to the student-athlete/donor: the athletic training staff, the head coach of the specific sport, Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance, Director of Athletics and the Associate Director of Athletics.

Negative Results:

The student-athlete will be contacted by the athletic department about the results and remain eligible to participate in athletics at the university. Even if a student-athlete tests negative for a drug test, he/she may be tested again during the academic year.

Positive Results: If a student-athlete tests positive, the following steps will be followed: a) A confirmation test will be administered at the university’s expense.

(14)

14

c) The student-athlete may, upon discretion of the Director of Athletics, be deemed ineligible to participate in his/her given sport until results are received from the confirmation test and MRO.

d) The student-athlete will be notified of his/her results following receipt of the results from the confirmation test and the MRO.

e) Results from the confirmation test and MRO will be deemed final and sanctions will be imposed as deemed appropriate by the athletic department.

f) If results are negative from the confirmation test and MRO, the drug test will be considered negative. Despite the negative result, the student-athlete may be subject to additional tests during the academic year.

Following are minimum sanctions that may be imposed by the athletic department for any violation of this drug policy. J. Financial Aid

Athletically Related Financial Aid

Athletic scholarships are not entitlements. They are initially awarded based upon athletic ability and on the condition that the recipient satisfy requirements of the letter of intent (LOI) and participate in the sport for the entire award period. Athletically related financial aid is typically offered in combination with other available financial aid components (e.g., academic merit awards, state and federal grants). After fulfilling the award period, an athletic scholarship may be renewed, non-renewed, or reduced based upon the recommendation of the head coach. Non-athletics scholarships are awarded conditionally and renewed only after the student has satisfied specific criteria established by the awarding agency. It is consistent and reasonable to expect that student-athletes be required to meet minimum athletic standards before athletics aid is renewed for subsequent years.

Award Period

Athletic scholarships shall not be awarded or guaranteed for a period longer than one academic year, but may be renewed on an annual basis so long as the student-athlete is athletically and academically eligible. Athletic scholarships may be awarded on a less than academic year basis (i.e., for one semester) if the student-athlete will be enrolled, or athletically or academically eligible for less than the full academic year.

Eligibility Exhausted

Student-Athletes who have exhausted their eligibility may continue to receive athletically related financial aid (not to exceed ten semesters of aid) so long as they are continuing their earnest pursuit of an undergraduate degree, subject to the standards for non-renewal and cancellation, discussed above. Such student-athletes may be required to work within the athletics department as a condition of continued aid.

(16)

16

Non-Athletically Related Institutional Aid

As noted previously, the complete financial aid package for most student-athletes will include other components, along with their ‘athletics scholarships’. Student-Athletes are encouraged to pursue any financial assistance available to them and particularly any awards which might enhance their academic profile or professional resume (e.g. academic merit awards, Honors Program scholarships, etc.). It is important, however, that the student-athlete notify the financial aid office of any outside financial assistance they are considering.

Renewal Procedure

The head coach will initiate the renewal process. The Letter of Intent (LOI) will be delivered to the student-athlete and the student-athlete will need to return the LOI to the Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance not later than July 1. A new LOI is required each year by all varsity student-athletes.

Reduction/Cancellations

It is Davenport University’s policy that institutional aid, based on any degree on athletic ability, may not be reduced or cancelled unless one of the following applies. Institutional aid may be reduced or canceled during the period of the award if the recipient:

 Renders him or herself ineligible for intercollegiate competition or

 Fraudulently misrepresents any information on an application, letter of intent or financial agreement or  Engages in serious misconduct warranting substantial disciplinary penalty or

 Voluntarily withdraws from a sport at any time for personal reasons  Violates any other conditions in the Letter of Intent (LOI)

Non-Renewal/Reduction – Right to Appeal. All non-renewal (or reduction) recommendations are to be reviewed by the Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance and personally communicated by the head coach to the student-athlete. Promptly thereafter, and in any event, no later than July 1, the Director of Athletics shall notify, in writing, the

Executive Director of Financial Aid, and the student-athlete of the decision not to renew (or to reduce) the athletics scholarship. The notification shall inform the student-athlete of their right to request an appeal of the decision. The request must be made within two weeks after notification.

NCAA Note: The institution’s regular financial aid authority shall notify the student-athlete in writing, within 14 consecutive calendar days from the date the student-athlete has been notified of the decision to reduce or cancel aid during the period of the award or the reduction or nonrenewal of aid for the following academic year, of the opportunity for a hearing when institutional financial aid based in any degree on athletics ability is reduced or canceled during the period of the award, or not renewed. The notification of the hearing opportunity shall include a copy of the institution’s established policies and procedures for conducting the required hearing, including the deadline by which a student-athlete must request the hearing. The institution shall conduct the hearing within 30 consecutive calendar days of receiving a student-athlete’s request for the appeal and shall not delegate the responsibility for conducting the hearing to the university’s athletics department or its appeals committee.

Reduction or cancellation of aid as outlined above will be approved only if such action is taken for proper cause and written documentation is submitted to the Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance and the Director of Athletics. All steps relative to the appeals procedure cannot be covered in a document such as this. Therefore, any additional questions should be forwarded to the Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance.

17 K. Gambling

Davenport University Athletics opposes all forms of legal and illegal sports wagering on college sports. The NCAA has developed a Don’t Bet On It web site to educate student-athletes, coaches, athletic administrators and the general public about NCAA rules about sports wagering (www.dontbetonit.org). Davenport University will adhere to the rules of the Don’t Bet On It guidelines which can be found at Don’t Bet on It.

NCAA NOTE – Student-Athletes at NCAA member schools shall not knowingly participate in sports wagering activities or provide information to individuals involved in or associated with any type of sports wagering activities concerning intercollegiate, amateur or professional athletics competition. Prospective or enrolled student-athletes found in violation of the provisions of this regulation shall be ineligible based on the application of bylaw 10.3.1 (a) or (b).

The above is a NCAA Division II policy that we will adopt in the event that we are accepted into the NCAA Division II Membership process.

L. Hazing

The Anti-Hazing Collaborative defines hazing as “any action or situation, with or without the consent of the participants, which recklessly, intentionally, or unintentionally endangers the mental, physical, or academic health or safety of a student.”

This includes, but is not limited to any situation which:  Creates a risk of injury to any individual or group  Causes discomfort to any individual or group  Causes embarrassment to any individual or group  Involves harassment of any individual or group  Involves degradation of any individual or group  Involves humiliation of an individual or group  Involves ridicule of an individual or group

 Involves or includes the willful destruction or removal of public or private property for the purpose of initiation or admission into, affiliation with, or as a condition for continued membership in an organization.

It includes physical injury, assault or battery, kidnapping or imprisonment, intentionally placing at risk of mental or emotional harm (putting “over the edge”), degradation, humiliation, the compromising of moral or religious values, forced consumption of any liquid or solid, placing an individual in physical danger (at risk) which includes abandonment, and impairment of physical liberties which include curfews or other interference with academic endeavors.

Hazing is strictly prohibited and violations will be dealt with severely at the discretion of university leadership. Consequences may include immediate dismissal from athletic team, suspensions, community service and loss of participation, as determined by university leadership and the athletic department. As with other violations of the Student Code, hazing incidents may also result in sanctions under the Student Code and criminal prosecution.

M. Social/ New Media Policies for Student-Athletes

Social and new media are defined as media designed to communicate electronically through social interaction using highly accessible public publishing forums and other social media platforms. Third parties including the media, faculty, future employers, and athletic conference officials can easily access student-athlete social media profiles and view all personal information. This accessibility includes all pictures, videos, comments and posters. Inappropriate material found by third parties affects the perception of the student, the athletic department, and the university. This may also be detrimental to a student-athlete’s future employment opportunities.

(18)

18

If information from a “private” student-athlete posting is brought to the attention of the university, the university is obligated to review the incident and will take the corrective and disciplinary action consistent with the Athletic and Student Codes of Conduct. The following rules and guidelines apply to student-athletes use of social media:

 Do not post information about other student-athletes from Davenport University or other institutions, unless it is related to congratulations for receiving an award or honor.

 Don't post about internal matters in the department, the DU campus, the conference, or the NAIA/NCAA and/or any other affiliation. Practice generosity. Find something good to say, or don't say it. Don't bash the competition. Common sense and courtesy should always prevail.

 All photos, podcasts, videos, news stories or other information not authored by an account manager should be used only in compliance with copyright laws. Do not engage with a poster who desires confidential information. If in doubt, ask you Assistant Director of Athletics for Communications or the Director of Athletics.

Disciplinary actions may include but are not limited to the following:  Written warning

 Meeting with the athletic department staff  Suspension or termination from athletic team

For your own safety, please keep the following recommendations in mind as you participate in social networking websites:

 Set your security settings so that only your friends can view your profile.

 You should not post your email, home address, local address, telephone number(s), or other personal information as it could lead to unwanted attention, stalking, identity theft, etc.

 Be aware of who you add as a friend to your site – many people are looking to take advantage of student-athletes or to seek connection with student-athletes.

 Consider how the above behaviors can be reflected in all social media applications.

If you are ever in doubt of the appropriateness of your online public material, consider whether it upholds and positively reflects your own values and ethics as well as Davenport University and the athletic department. It is imperative as a student-athlete to present a positive image and don’t do anything to embarrass yourself, the team, your family or the university.

N. Student-Athlete Surveys

Athletic Department Surveys

The athletic department conducts an annual online student-athlete survey. The survey is developed through Survey Monkey and is distributed with a link that is emailed directly to all student-athletes. Student-Athletes have thirty days to complete the survey and are sent several reminders while the survey is open. Results of the survey are shared with university leadership, athletics

administration, respective coaches, Athletic Advisory Board and SAAC. Feedback both positive and negative is shared with the respective coaches to enhance the program and student-athlete experience. Student-Athletes who would like to meet with the athletic administration about their student-athlete experience are encouraged to set up an appointment with either the Director of Athletics or Associate Director of Athletics.

Athletic Training Exit Interviews

Exit Interviews will be performed by the DU athletic training staff with all student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility. All student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility are required to report all injuries to the DU athletic training staff at this time.

O. Sportsmanship

Student-Athletes bear the responsibility of displaying good sportsmanship during games and competition. Behavior at all times must reflect the high standards of honor and dignity that should characterize participation in competitive intercollegiate sports. Student-Athletes shall conduct themselves in a manner reflecting positively on the reputation of the university both on and off the "field of play," in pre-game and post-game comments to media, and when traveling and participating at other institutions.

(19)

19

Student-Athletes are expected to maintain an attitude of dignity and respect toward opponents. The following are examples of unsportsmanlike behavior: fighting opponents, fans or officials; taunting opponents; inappropriate "celebrations" with the intent to demean opponents, disrespectful attitude toward opponents; inciting crowd hostility toward opponents in an unsportsmanlike manner; or profane or vulgar language.

As a member of the NAIA, we are committed to establishing sportsmanship and developing healthy environments for competition through the "Champions of Character" program. The five core values include integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and leadership. These character values help young people and those associated with their development make good choices in all aspects of their life and reflect the true spirit of competition.

Student-Athletes displaying unsportsmanlike behavior will be subject to disciplinary action, as determined by the coaching staff and/or athletic department staff.

P. Student-Athlete Employment

On-campus employment opportunities are available to all students through the campus jobs web site or in person at the department where you would like to work. Hiring is done by the department supervisor and is based on your interests, qualifications, and available work schedule. Since many students will be looking for work at the same time, prompt and persistent application will give you the best chance to get the job you want. We cannot guarantee that each student-athlete who is eligible to work will be able to earn as much as she/he wants.

NCAA NOTE -Under NCAA Division II legislation a new process will be adopted for monitoring student-athlete employment. Prior to employment, all student-athletes will be required to complete the student-athlete employment Internship form. This form can be accessed through the Front Rush website. Earnings from a student-athletes on or off campus employment that occurs at any time is not included when determining a student-athlete’s full grant-in-aid or the institution’s financial aid limitations. Compensation may be paid to a student-athlete:

1. Only for work actually performed and

2. At a rate commensurate with the going rate in that locality for similar services

3. When ensured that an employer does not use the athletics reputation of a student-athlete employee to promote the sale of a product or service

The above is a NCAA Division II policy that we will adopt in the event that we are accepted into the NCAA Division II Membership process.

Q. Team Travel

All athletic travel to and from competition sites will be via approved travel methods. Most travel is provided by bus, with some trips by air, minibus, van or car. The Director of Athletics/Associate Director of Athletics approves all athletic transportation. All student-athletes are required to travel with their team. Under unique circumstances a student-athlete may travel separately to his or her residence once the contest or tournament is finished, the student-athlete must submit a completed Student-Athlete Travel Waiver Formto the head coach prior to the team’s departure. For student-athletes under the age of eighteen, his or her parent or legal guardian must sign the Student-Athlete Travel Waiver Form which can be obtained from the Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance and/or appropriate head coach. If a student-athlete leaves the team travelling for any reason without notifying his or her head coach and submitting a Student-Athlete Travel Waiver Form, the student-athlete will be subject to disciplinary action, which may include suspension from the team.

In instances where permission is granted and the Student-Athlete Travel Waiver Form is completed, the university will be released by written statement from any responsibility in case of injury and/or accident. In addition, university and athletic insurance will not be applicable.
