Healthcare Associated Infections (HCAI) and Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) impact hundreds of millions of patients worldwide each year. They cause prolonged hospital stays, long-term disability, significant mortality as well as huge financial losses for healthcare systems and high costs for patients and their family.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) estimated that 4,131,000 patients are affected by approximately 4,544,100 episodes of HCAI every year in Europe. Of every 100 hospitalized patients at any given time, 7 in developed and 10 in developing countries will acquire at least one health care-associated infection (WHO report, 2011). Annual financial losses are estimated at ~€7 billion in Europe, including direct costs only and reflecting 16 million extra days of hospital stay, and at about US$ 6.5 billion in the USA. To overcome these challenges, also to manage unexpected pandemic situations like Ebola (2014) and COVID-19, there is a greater need to improve surveillance and infection-control practices worldwide. Many infection prevention and control measures demand high level of maintenance and extensive labour time.
