Venezia Sport - Cable Cardigan

This shape flattering cardigan is worked from the bottom-up, in separate pieces that are seamed together. The button bands are worked simultaneously with the cardigan fronts.

Instructions are included for two different front neckline options, one that is smaller (as pictured in the main pattern photo) and a second one that is wider (see photo below).

The bodice features pretty cables that accentuate the waist.

Sizes: S (M, L, XL, 2XL)

Chest Measurement: 34 (38, 42, 44, 48)inch actual chest measurement. The cardigan has zero ease around the chest, however, the cable ribbed construction has some stretch and gives up to 2-4” of additional ease.

Gauge: 24 sts & 28 rows – 4” in stockinette st on larger sized needles

Materials: Cascade Venezia Sport (70% Merino/30% Silk; 281 m/307 yds per 100 g/3.53oz) – 3 (4, 5, 5, 5) skeins

Needles: 1 US # 5 (3.75 mm) –32” circular needle or use needle size to obtain gauge

1 US # 3 (3.25 mm) - 16” & 32” circular needle & DPN

Optional: 1 set of US #1 (2.5 mm) – 32” circular needle to pick up neckband stitches

Notions: Round & Removable Stitch Markers, Tapestry Needle, Cable Needle Stitch Holder/Spare Needle or Scrap Yarn to hold stitches.

DIRECTIONS: BACK

With larger sized needles, CO 110 (114, 126, 132, 144) sts. Starting with a WS row, work 11 rows in garter st. Next RS Row: K all sts.

Next WS Row: P all sts.

Repeat last two rows – 25 (29, 29, 29, 33) more times. Total stockinette rows worked – 52 (60, 60, 60, 68) rows.

Fitting Tip: If a longer length cardigan is desired, work more rows in the stockinette portion.

Start working Cable pattern:

Row 1 (RS): P1 (3, 9, 12, 18), (P4, K9) - 8 times (all sizes), P5 (7, 13, 16, 22). Row 2 (WS): K5 (7, 13, 16, 22), (P9, K4) – 8 times (all sizes), K1 (3, 9, 12, 18). Row 3(RS): P1 (3, 9, 12, 18), (P4, C6F, K3) - 8 times (all sizes), P5 (7, 13, 16, 22). Row 4 (WS): K5 (7, 13, 16, 22), (P9, K4) – 8 times (all sizes), K1 (3, 9, 12, 18). Row 5 (RS): P1 (3, 9, 12, 18), (P4, K9) - 8 times (all sizes), P5 (7, 13, 16, 22). Row 6 (WS): K5 (7, 13, 16, 22), (P9, K4) – 8 times (all sizes), K1 (3, 9, 12, 18). Armhole –after 7 (7, 8, 8, 8) cable repeats have been worked, start armhole shaping, continue working the 8-row cable repeat.

Next RS Row: BO 3 (3, 6, 6, 8) sts, work rest of sts in pattern. Next WS Row: BO 3 (3, 6, 6, 8)sts, work rest of sts in pattern. Repeat last 2 rows – 1 more time (all sizes).

Next RS Row: BO 3 (3, 4, 4, 6) sts, work rest of sts in pattern. Next WS Row: BO 3 (3, 4, 4, 6) sts, work rest of sts in pattern. Next RS Row: BO 1 sts (all sizes), work rest of sts in pattern. Next WS Row: BO 1 sts (all sizes), work rest of sts in pattern.

Repeat last 2 Rows – 3 (2, 1, 4, 2) more times.

Total of 13 (12, 18, 21, 25) sts dec. for each armhole. 84 (90, 90, 90, 94) sts remaining on needles.

Continue working in pattern until piece measures 7 (8, 8.5, 8.5, 9)” from beginning of armhole shaping, end-ing with Row 4 or Row 8 of cable pattern. BO all sts.

LEFT FRONT

With larger sized needles, CO 67 (69, 75, 78, 84) sts. Starting with a WS row, work 11 rows in garter st. Next RS Row: K all sts until 10 sts remain, PM, K10 (all sizes).

Next WS Row: K10, SM, P to end of row (all sizes). Repeat last two rows – 25 (29, 29, 29, 33) more times. Total stockinette rows worked – 52 (60, 60, 60, 68) rows.

Fitting Tip: If a longer length cardigan is desired, work more rows in the stockinette portion.

Row 5 (RS): P1 (3, 9, 12, 18), (P4, K9) - 4 times all sizes, P4, SM, K10. Row 6 (WS): K10, SM, K4, (P9, K4) – 4 times, K1 (3, 9, 12, 18).

Row 7 (RS): P1 (3, 9, 12, 18), (P4, K3, C6B) - 4 times (all sizes), P4, SM, K10. Row 8 (WS): K10, SM, K4, (P9, K4) – 4 times, K1 (3, 9, 12, 18).

Repeat Rows 1 – 8 -- 6 (6, 7, 7, 7) more times.

Next WS Row: BO 25 sts (all sizes for smaller neckline shaping) or BO 34 sts (all sizes for larger neckline shap-ing), continue working the rest of the row in pattern.

Continue working in pattern until piece measures 7 (8, 8.5, 8.5, 9)” from beginning of armhole shaping, end-ing with Row 4 or Row 8 of cable pattern.

RIGHT FRONT

With larger sized needles, CO 67 (69, 75, 78, 84) sts. Starting with a WS row, work 11 rows in garter st. Next RS Row: K10, PM, k all sts to end of row.

Next WS Row: P all sts to marker, SM, K10.

Repeat last two rows – 25 (29, 29, 29, 33) more times. Total stockinette rows worked – 52 (60, 60, 60, 68) rows.

Start working Cable pattern:

Important:

Buttonholes are worked starting with RS Row 5 of cable pattern. Continue working buttonholes every second cable on RS Row 5, as follows:

RS Row 5 - K3, K2tog, YO, SSK, K rest of sts to marker.

Continue working in pattern until piece measures 7 (8, 8.5, 8.5, 9)” from beginning of armhole shaping, end-ing with Row 4 or Row 6 of cable pattern.

BO remaining 29 (32, 32, 32, 33) sts.

SLEEVES (work two)

With smaller sized needles, CO 42 (46, 46, 50, 50) sts. Starting with a WS row, work 11 rows in garter st. Next RS Row: Change to larger sized needles, increase 10 (all sizes) sts evenly.

52 (56, 56, 60, 60) sts on needles.

Continue working sleeves in stockinette st for 12 (all sizes) rows. Increase Row (RS): K2, M1, K to last 2 sts, M1, K2.

Repeat last 6 (6, 6, 4, 4) rows – 6 (7, 15, 16, 21) more times. 66 (72, 88, 94, 104) sts on needles.

Work sleeves in pattern until piece measures 9.5 (10, 10.5, 10.5, 11)” from CO edge.

Shape Sleeve Cap:

BO 4 (4, 4, 4, 6) sts at beginning of next 2 rows.

BO 2 (2, 2, 2, 2) sts at beginning of next 2 rows.

54 (60, 76, 82, 88) sts on needles.

Decrease Row 1 (RS): K1, ssk, work in pattern to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. Decrease Row 2 (WS): P all sts.

Repeat last two rows – 20 (23, 29, 32, 34) more times.

End with a WS Row – BO remaining 12 (12, 16, 16, 18) sts on next row.

FINISHING (part 1)

Block pieces, sew shoulder seams, fronts and back side seams together. Sew together sleeves and sew sleeves onto cardigan.

NECKLINE

Using smaller sized needle, pick up and knit 25 sts (all sizes) from the right front band, pick up 3 sts for every 4 rows worked for the right front vertical neckline,

pick up 1 stitch per bound-off stitch for the back neck,

pick up 3 sts for every 4 rows worked for the left front vertical neckline, pick up 25 sts (all sizes) from the left front band.

Work 3 rows in garter st.

Next Row (RS - Buttonhole row): K3, K2tog, YO, SSK, K to end of row. Next Row (WS): K to YO, kfb into YO, K to end of row.

Work 5 more rows in garter st.

BO all sts in next row, make sure not to bind off too tight.
