(19) CLASS 10 | 1st IEO - 2010. Scientists have been using Conservation Canines in their research since 1997. These dogs have enabled them to non‐invasively access vast amounts of genetic and physiological information which is used to tackle conservation problems around the world. Such information has proved vital for determining the causes and consequences of human disturbances on wildlife as well as the actions needed to mitigate such impacts. The ideal detection dog is extremely energetic with an excessive play drive. These dogs will happily work all day long, motivated by the expectation of a ball game as reward for sample detection. The obsessive, high‐energy personalities of detection dogs also make them difficult to maintain as pets. As a result, they frequently find themselves abandoned to animal shelters, facing euthanasia. (20) CLASS 10 | 1st IEO - 2010. Passage 5 Interviewer: Maya Angelou: . What other qualities do you think made him an effective leader? Intelligence, a very profound intelligence. Now, that does not always go hand‐in‐hand with intellect. With Dr. King, it did. But I point out that intelligence is a separate gift, for the benefit of students, so that they may think of themselves as intellectual and not very intelligent, or intelligent and not very intellectual. One hopes, of course, that they try to bring the two virtues, the two elements, into their lives at the same time. Dr. King was profoundly intelligent. That is to say, he was able to see, to examine, to analyze, to evaluate, to measure the climate of the times, the expediency of his calling, of his ministry. That's intelligence. Now intellect, of course, helped him to be able to explain what he saw with grace and eloquence and wonderful quotations, whether from Paul Laurence Dunbar or Longfellow. That was out of the virtue of his studies. . 39. The question in the first line is one that A. the interviewer has asked Dr. King. B. Maya Angelou has asked Dr. King. VI You are going to read some information for gardeners living in the hill stations. For the questions that follow choose from the plants (A), (B), (C), or (D). Some of the plants may be chosen more than once. (a) Dahlias are sturdy plants bearing showy flowers in a wide range of rather gaudy colours. Sow in a frame in April and plant the seedlings out when frosts are over. Dahlias flower throughout the summer and into autumn. When autumn frosts begin to make them look unhappy, you should dig up the tuberous roots and save them. A shed or garage that is frost free is the ideal place. The following season you can plant the tubers instead of sowing seeds again. (b) Lupins are hardy perennials. This means that the plants will stay in your garden and carry on flowering year after year. Seeds sown in April will usually give you some spikes of colour in the first summer, and year after year the plants get bigger and the flowering stems get taller and grander. Selective breeding has led to the introduction of some fine, bicoloured varieties in some dazzling shades. The short-lived flowers make a real midsummer spectacle. (c) Like dahlias, busy lizzies need to be started off under glass, as they cannot stand frost, and planting out is best done in May. Outdoor flowering ends in September, but beat the frosts and bring your favourite specimens indoors to give your home some winter colour! Indoors they will carry on flowering indefinitely, though you may like to plant them out again when spring returns. Like pansies they do well in sun or shade, but the soil must be moist. Most varieties grow to a height of only 20 cm or so. (d) Pansies have a good long flowering season year after year, and some varieties can be sown in spring to give truly splendid results the first autumn. Unlike dahlias and lupins, which can grow a meter tall, pansies grow no higher than 10 or 20 cm. Their soil, position and moisture requirements are just like those of busy lizzies but pansies differ in being hardy. Give them a try.. Copyright©2015. Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF).

Thick, black, smoke curling out of smokestacks, horrible – tasting chemicals in your drinking water, pesticides in your food – these are examples of pollution. Some obvious kinds of pollution are air, soil, and water. Some less obvious, or less well-known kinds of pollution are radioactive, noise, light pollution, and green-house gases. Air pollution can be caused by particles, liquids, or gases that make the air harmful to breathe. There are two main types of air pollution – primary and secondary. Primary pollutants enter the air directly, like smoke from factories and car exhaust pipes. Secondary pollutants are chemicals that mix together to pollute the air like mixtures of emissions, or waste output from vehicles and factory smoke that change to form more dangerous pollutants in the air and sunlight. Soil pollution can be caused by pesticides, leakage from chemical tanks, oil spills, and other chemicals which get into the soil through dumping or accidental contamination. Soil pollution can also cause water pollution when underground water becomes contaminated by coming into contact with the polluted soil. Water pollution can be caused by waste products such as sewage, oil spills, and litter in streams, rivers, lakes, and oceans. Early farmers had to account for communally stored crops. Early counting systems involved the use of small tokens which represented farmers’ stores. In the area which is now Southern Iraq, little figures shaped like discs, balls and pyramids were used from about 7500 BC, to represent various holdings. Later, marks which represented the figures were inscribed on clay tablets by use of a blunt reed to cut into the wet clay. Still, the symbols were always connected with specific merchandise. Around 3000 BC, people began using clay tablets and a new accounting system which they perfected over the next 4,000 years. A writing system called cuneiform, which consisted of wedge–shaped symbols, was also invented. At the same time, other cultures were independently developing numbering and writing systems. Owing to this, bullying is now a problem that has everyone worried, not just the people affected by it.. The Collins dictionary defines bullying as ‘hurting or intimidating a weaker or a smaller person especially to make him do something’. Every morning hundreds of people and school children all over the world wake up afraid to face the bullies in their lives. Bullying can take many different forms. Spreading rumours, forming cliques and turning someone’s friends against them are some forms of bullying seen more commonly in adults whereas hitting or threatening to hit, stealing and name-calling are more common with children. Sometimes it can be as subtle as someone constantly refusing to acknowledge your contribution or value your existence. Whatever form it takes though, it is just as damaging. The impact of bullying can be seen in the form of plummeting performance at work, loss of appetite, loss of confidence, high levels of stress and anxiety and overall a more subdued and scared existence.. Example According to the passage, which of them is not an impact of bullying? A. B. C. D.. Low self esteem Name-calling Decreased hunger Irrational fears. 21. What does the author have to say about the ‘forms of bullying’ in paragraph 2?. A.. B. C.. D.. It is difficult to identify different forms of bullying in children.
