Introduction

1.1

A comprehensive induction programme is of fundamental importance to

building positive relationships with new staff when they join the

organisation. It welcomes people, helps them to settle in and to

understand the culture and values of the organisation.

1.1.1

It sets standards and ensures that new staff have clear terms of reference

on which to build their knowledge and motivation to carry out their roles as

quickly and effectively as possible, thereby contributing to the quality of

patient care. It also provides health and safety reassurances for the

organisation

1.2

Corporate induction events will be provided for all new staff. They will be

supplemented by local induction arrangements. These local arrangements

will have a core requirement but will also be flexible to be adapted where

necessary to meet the needs of the individual, local team, service or

department.

Procedure for Newly Qualified Nursing Staff

2.1

The Trust has a twice yearly intake of newly qualified nursing staff who

undertakes an extended induction period. Staff who will be working on the

Nurse Bank only are also covered by these arrangements. (Appendix 1)

2.2

The period covers two weeks and incorporates the key components of the

Trust Corporate Induction Programme plus a range of specific sessions to

support the newly qualified nurses’ transition into the workplace. (Appendix

2)

2.3

Once the training has been complete the nurse will undertake a local

induction process in the workplace resulting in a completed Local

Induction Checklist (Policy Appendix 2) which should be completed and

returned to the Training and Development Department, St. Nicholas

Hospital.

3

Monitoring and Compliance

3.1

Records of attendance at both the Corporate Induction Programme and

completion of the Local Induction Checklists is recorded and monitored by

Workforce Directorate.

3.2

Reports of compliance are prepared for the Workforce Training and

Development Sub Group, with none compliance reports also made

available to Group Directors via the Trust Dashboards.
