Program Outcomes Guide (POG)

Program Title: Pharmacy Technician Letter of Recognition Program Team: Elaine Ashby, Jessie Lindner

Expected Program Learning Outcomes (PLO) See attached outcomes that match the current requirements that we must meet using these classes as part of the accredited certificate for pharmacy technology.

Assessment (How do students demonstrate achievement of these PLO?) Student success is measured by success in completing the PTCB or ICPT national certification exams or becoming registered or employed as a pharmacy technician. Since much of this information is self-reported, we will have to actively survey students to determine their success. Course-level assessments. Currently, most of the content-driven PLO are assessed at the course-level as follows: There are course level assessments for each of the 3 component courses.

Validation (What methods are used to validate your assessment?)

Since the PTCB and ICPT are national certification exams, success on the National Certification Exam will validate our program results.

We will also survey local pharmacies to validate that our LOR graduates are successfully making the transition to the workplace.

Results:

See attached PTCB results.

Follow-up (How have you used the data to improve student learning?) Students have suggested a PTCB review class to help prepare for the exam.

In progress or planned:

We hope to add a certification exam review course to the curriculum in the next year. Budget Justification

**Both the Letter of Recognition and Certificate need to have a full-time program coordinator to collect data on our students, monitor student success, and modify the program as determined by these assessments.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES

Prepare medications for distribution.

Verify the measurements, preparation, and/or packaging of medications produced by other technicians. Assist the pharmacist in the administration of immunizations.

Assist the pharmacist in the identification of patients who desire/require counseling to optimize the use of medications, equipment, and devices.

Initiate, verify, assist in the adjudication of, and collect payment and/or initiate billing for pharmacy services and goods.

Purchase pharmaceuticals, devices, and supplies according to an established purchasing program Control the inventory of medications, equipment, and devices according to an established plan.

Assist the pharmacist in monitoring the practice site and/or service area for compliance with federal, state, and local laws; regulations; and professional standards.

Maintain pharmacy equipment and facilities.

Assist the pharmacist in preparing, storing, and distributing investigational medication produces. Assist the pharmacist in the monitoring of medication therapy.

Participate in the pharmacy department’s process for preventing medication misadventures. Take personal responsibility for assisting the pharmacist in improving direct patient care. Demonstrate ethical conduct in all job-related activities.

Maintain an image appropriate for the profession of pharmacy. Resolve conflicts through negotiation.

Understand the principles for managing change.

Appreciate the need to adapt direct patient care to meet the needs of diversity.

Appreciate the benefits of active involvement in local, state, and national technician and other pharmacy organizations.

Appreciate the value of obtaining technician certification.

Understand the importance of and resources for staying current with changes in pharmacy practice. Communicate clearly when speaking or writing.

Maximize work efficiently through the use of technology.

Efficiently solve problems commonly encountered in one’s own work. Display a caring attitude toward patients in all aspects of job responsibilities. Maintain confidentiality of patient and proprietary business information. Understand direct patient care delivery systems in multiple practice settings.
