HORA or D/2
D-2 or Hora Dhana-Varga
the 1/2 Portion = Second Divisional Chart "fruits of the treasury”
BPHS Chapter 6: Shloka 5-6
"The Rashi owned by a Graha, is called its Kshetra. The first half of an odd Rashi is the Hora, ruled by Surya. While the second half is the Hora of Chandra. The reverse is true in the case of an even Rashi. Half of a Rashi is called Hora. These are totally 24, counted from Mesha and repeated twice (at the rate of 12) in the whole of the zodiac.”
David Frawley in Astrology of the Seers
The Hora chart is simple as it is the most basic of the harmonic charts.
The first 1/2 of odd signs like Aries is ruled by the Sun, the second 1/2 by the Moon.
Conversely, the first 1/2 of even signs, like Taurus, is ruled by the Moon; the second 1/2, by the Sun.
For example, if Mars is located in 20 degrees of Virgo, as it is in the second half of an even sign, it would be in the Hora of the Sun. Hence, the Hora chart only gives solar or lunar status of planets and does not place them in signs like the other harmonic charts.

Good results from Hora Lagna
The Hora lagnesh – either the Sun or the Moon – should be strong, making any one of the following combinations:
- The Sun and the Moon should aspect each other.
- They should be posited in a trine or Kendra in the natal chart. - Hora lagna lord shoud be posited in own hora.
- Hora lagna lord (the Sun or the Moon) should be associated or aspected by benefic planets, then the native would be virtuous, intelligent, brave and well behaved. He could be rich, happy and prosperous.

Bad results from Hora lagna
- When hora lagna is posited in 6, 8, 12 houses in the natal chart.
- When hora lagna is associated or aspected by malefic planets in the natal chart.
- When hora lagna is debilitated or conjunct debilitated planets then such a combination would make the native mean, selfish, deceitful, immoral and unhappy.
- It is normally concluded that the Sun, Mars and Jupiter give good effects when they occupy the hora of the Sun.
- Moon , Venus and Saturn are good when they occupy the hora of the Moon.
- Mercury is considered well-placed in both the horas.
- If a malefic or cruel lagna lord occupies an odd sign in the natal chart and falls in the Sun’s hora in the D/2 chart there will be a tendency of being cruel, strong and wealthy.
- A benefic planet placed in a even sign in the natal chart and falls in the Moon hora in the natal chart, the native is brilliant, soft spoken and fortunate.
- Mixed of planets gives mixed results.
- The mahadasha lord and its placement in odd or even sign and different degrees of divisions (as stated below) will indicate the native’s speech, attitude, speech and fortune.
Some scholars are of the opinion that different strength of a planet varies when they are placed in the following 3 divisions of a hora:
Hora Divisions Degrees of the division Strength of the division
1 0 to 5 and 15 to 20 Strongest
2 5 to 10 and 20 to 25 Average
3 10 to 15 and 25 to 30 weakest
Mansagri gives the following general effects of hora placement:
- Sun placed in Moon’s hora : the native has comforts and wealth acquired by his own efforts. At the same time he will be dignified with feminine disposition.
- Sun placed in own hora : the native will be courageous, hardworking, does victorious deeds.
- Moon placed in Sun hora: the native is troubled by females and enemies, does not have many friends and has low intelligence.
- Mars in Sun hora: brave, wealthy and persevering and is the beloved of all.
- Jupiter in Moon hora : the person will be noble and with good character.
- Venus in Sun hora – will like to co-habit with low character women; and in Moon hora – the spouse will be a good woman.
- Saturn in Sun hora – will be a husband of a sterile woman; and in Moon hora – the person will be a henpecked husband.
- Malefic planets in Sun hora gives wealth and luxuries, will be dear to a king.

The effects of Hora or D/2 in the chart – Example 2:
- The Hora lagnesh, Sun is associated with Moon in Moon hora, who is a friend, but in the 12th house in the natal chart.
- Hora lagna lord is associated by a benefic Venus, but at the same time by Rahu who is a malefic along with Mercury.
- These indications not so beneficial but at the same time the native gets various comforts.
- Considering the above conditions, during the dasha of Sun and Moon, the attitude, manners, speech, etc. of the native did not bring him him any honour or dignity.
- The hora lagna is Leo and Sun, Mars and Jupiter give good effects when they occupy the hora of the Sun. In the instant case, Jupiter and Mars occupies a kendra and are conjunct. Further, both are lords of trikonas in the natal chart, and Jupiter aspects 5th and 9th. The both are capable of giving the native honour, dignity and wealth.
- Any cruel planet occupying Sun’s hora lagna, gives wealth and honour. Mars in Sun hora: brave, wealthy and persevering and is the beloved of all.
The truth of hora lagna in the present case is as follows: i) The native became the beloved of all.
ii) With the 9th house operating fully during Mars dasha, under the benefic aspect of Jupiter, the native became a corporator, built a temple, got a house and built a 3 star hotel.
iii) He got honour and social status.
iv) Moresoever, his language was refined and commanding and attiude with the public made him endearing to one and all, even his enemies.
