Backup and Terminal Adapter Applications

T

he IBS Single Port represents Controlware’s latest generation of backup prod-ucts. The IBS is ideally suited for backup applications in a wide range of net-work scenarios with backup data rates ranging from 64 Kbit/s up to 2.048 Mbit/s. Features such as remote management and configuration via software download, integrated SNMP agent and Ethernet interface make the IBS the ideal equipment for backing up dedicated leased lines in Wide Area Networks (WANs). By using dial up ISDN, the IBS ensures the availability of wide area networks. This is achieved automatically and cost effectively.

Due to its modular design the IBS can be adapted to the customer’s actual band-width requirements and can be upgraded to accommodate higher data rates. Thus, the IBS also responds best to the demands of carriers offering Frame Relay services. The IBS can be fully integrated into Controlware’s TAXI Manager network man-agement systems, as well as into the umbrella network manman-agement systems Tivoli NetView and HP OpenView. The device can, in fact, be easily integrated into any network management system, which supports the SNMP V1 standard.

Features

Backup

The IBS ensures the availability of impor-tant links and vital applications. As soon as the leased line fails, the IBS immediate-ly establishes a backup path via ISDN at speeds ranging from 64 Kbit/s up to 1.920 Mbit/s or even offers full backup of E1/T1 lines at speeds up to 2.048 Mbit/s (IBS E1).

The IBS constantly monitors the leased line and is protocol transparent. Thus, no protocol-dependent configuration or top-ology and routing changes are necessary. Full bandwidth of the leased line is available as no data is used by the IBS for monitoring.

The IBS automatically detects a failure of the leased line using a combination of various call criteria and establishes an alternate connection via ISDN. When a backup is in progress, the IBS continues to monitor the leased line, thus ensuring that recovery from a backup is also automatic.

as the ISDN protocol can be selected via configuration parameters.

Variable ISDN Interfaces

The IBS is available with various ISDN interfaces. Depending on the require-ments users can select modules equipped with one or more ISDN BRI S or U inter-faces, one ISDN PRI interface for E1 lines and one ISDN PRI interface for T1 lines.

Automatic ISDN Line Verification

In order to ensure the availability of the ISDN path, an ISDN line verification test checks automatically the availability of the ISDN network. The ISDN connection awaiting backup simply remains idle. During this time, failures of the ISDN path itself may go unnoticed. In order to provide an early warning of impending ISDN problems, the IBS conducts a simu-lated backup at regular intervals. Test data is exchanged, but the data stream is not actually switched over. Any connect-ing problems are forwarded to the net-work manager and are also stored in local log files.

Disaster Recovery

The IBS provides backup and disaster recov-ery within the same unit. For example, if it is not possible to establish a connection between the two sites being monitored, the IBS automatically dials alternate lo-cations (e.g. a backup computing centre).

Local and Remote Software

Download

The operating software of the IBS or parts of it can be downloaded to any remotely installed device without requiring the presence of service personnel. A download of the IBS operating software or parts of it can be carried out locally via a serial interface and remotely via the ISDN network or IP based via the Ethernet Interface. Two complete software versions can be stored in the internal FLASH.

Multiple ISDN Protocols

The IBS allows the integration of differ-ent ISDN protocols into a single operating software. Corporations with global networks only need one product revision

Inband Communication and Access

Security

The IBS provides access protection by checking the calling party identification number. More than 96 valid access numbers may be defined. In addition, each unit may be assigned a password, which is exchanged inband in each B-channel during connection set-up. This function is especially important for inter-national connections, as ISDN gateways often delete all calling party information, thereby rendering all other access protec-tion schemes useless.

BONDING Compliant

Channel aggregation takes place in accordance with the Bandwidth ON Demand Interoperability Group Mode 1 de facto standard.

TAXI-System Compatibility

The IBS is fully compatible to Controlware’s TAXI-System and may thus be connected using a primary rate inter-face and the DBB Module for X.21 or V.35 applications or the Quad E1/T1 Module in conjunction with the IMX Module for G.703/4 applications. This is useful in star points where several IBS connect into one central TAXI-System.

Multiple Time Windows

The IBS uses programmable time windows to allow backup operation during user specified times. This feature prevents ISDN call charges being accrued during periods when data transfer is not vital.

Remote Supervisor

The IBS features an easy-to-use supervisor port, which can also be accessed remotely via ISDN. With Controlware offering fully compatible remote supervisory access for all units, an IBS may be accessed via another IBS or the TAXI-System. The three-level password protection scheme, the command file editor and the online help facilities are uniformly available in all Controlware ISDN products.

User-friendly Windows Based

Configuration Manager

With the IBS, Controlware introduces a new configuration manager, which allows the user to configure the IBS via a Windows based user-friendly software module.

Integrated SNMP Agent

The integrated SNMP agent supports the standard MIB II and the Controlware spe-cific ISDN MIB. All configuration param-eters as well as all alarm and status mes-sages are supported via the integrated SNMP agent. The IBS can thus be integrated into every SNMP network management platform. As a communication interface, either the optional Ethernet interface or the SLIP (serial line IP) port can be used.

Network Management

The IBS can be managed remotely together with the TAXI-System and IDB dial-backup adapters using Controlware’s network management system TAXI Manager, which runs on standard umbrella NMS platforms such as HP OpenView or Tivoli NetView. The TAXI Manager enables convenient configuration and monitoring of all TAXI-System appli-cations. Access to the NMS can be sup-ported via ISDN, serial line IP (SLIP) and via Ethernet. The standard IP addressing allows for full integration of the NMS data with any existing IP network.

For more information refer to Network Management literature.

Terminal Adapter

The IBS single port is also available as a multispeed Terminal Adapter without the backup option. This version is ideally suited for high speed ISDN dial up applications, such as Video Conferencing, High Quality Video Surveillance or LAN Interconnection. The Terminal Adapter version has the same modular platform and can be easily

upgraded as soon as the speed requirements change.

Full network management support and windows based configuration position the IBS TA as a versatile professional ISDN Terminal Adapter which can be combined with the Controlware TAXI System in order to concentrate many ISDN dial up connections on one central location.
