Traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing

For a full statement of the School of Nursing's baccalaureate degree

requirements, see the current Undergraduate Record. The basic requirements are:

1. Completion of 120 semester-hours of course work with an average of "C" or a grade-point average of 2.0. Of these 120 hours, 51 must be general education and\or elective nursing courses, and 69 must be required nursing courses.

2. Completion of the following general education requirements:

a. First Writing Requirement: ENWR 105/105 (6 credits) or ENWR 110 or ENWR 210 (3 credits) or exemption.

b. Second Writing Requirement: Any course designed to develop

writing skills. See detailed description below.

c. Natural Science and Math: (12 semester hours) BIOL 121, BIOL 206

and BIOL 207 (Human Anatomy and Physiology) are required. Acceptable courses include mathematics (excluding MATH 100 and MATH 103), statistics, chemistry, physics, genetics, environmental science, geology, and ecology. Students considering graduate education are encouraged to take statistics.

d. Social Science and History: (9 semester hours) Acceptable courses

include history, government, psychology, economics, western civilization, political science, women's studies, and anthropology, NUIP 315.

e. Humanities and Fine Arts: (9 semester hours) Acceptable courses

include philosophy, ethics, art, religion, music, drama, and foreign languages.

f. Electives: (17 or more to total 53 general education and/or elective

nursing hours) Three courses (up to 7 semester hours) in physical education or skills courses such as studio art or music performance may be counted toward these elective credit requirements. All ROTC courses successfully completed may be counted as elective credit. MATH 100 and

MATH 103 may also be counted as electives.

3. Completion of the prescribed professional nursing course of study as listed in the Undergraduate Record with a final cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0. Students are responsible for ensuring that all courses are complete and included on their official University transcript.

4. Enrollment and payment of all required tuition and fees for no fewer than two regular semesters or the equivalent.

Second Writing Requirement

In order for a course to meet the School of Nursing's guidelines of the Second Writing Requirement (SWR), it must:

1. carry at least three credits;

2. be designed as appropriate for the development of writing skills;

3. have at least two writing assignments totaling 4,000 words (twenty pages) or more;

a. assignments must be written in English;

b. Blue books, quizzes, and final examinations do not count;

4. have a student/faculty ratio no greater than 30:1; teaching assistants may be counted as faculty, but graders may not;

5. be taken at the University. Students should give the SWR form to the professor before the completion of the course. The Second Writing Requirement form must be completed and on file in the School of Nursing in order for a course to meet the SWR.

6. be taken for a letter grade; (Credit (CR/NC) or Satisfactory (S/U) grades will not fulfill the SWR);

In order for a student to fulfill the SWR with such a course, he/she must: 1. earn a grade of C- or better;

2. file a Statement of Completion form as soon as the course is completed; (Forms are available from Hollyn Mangione McLeod Hall 2013.)

NOTE: A course which satisfies the SWR may also be used to meet one other requirement. The credit hours, however, are counted only once. The SWR can only be met with a University of Virginia course -- it cannot be transferred in from elsewhere.

RN-BSN Program

For a full statement of the School of Nursing's RN-BSN degree requirements, see the current Undergraduate Record. The basic requirements follow:

1. Completion of the following general education requirements (55 credits

required):

a. English Composition: (3 semester hours)

b. Second Writing Requirement: Any course designed to develop writing

skills. See detailed description on preceding page.

c. Natural Science and Math: (12 semester hours) A course or sequence

of courses (if content is divided between two courses) in Human Anatomy and Physiology is required. Acceptable courses include mathematics, chemistry, physics, genetics, environmental science, geology, and

statistics.

d. Social Science and History: (9 semester hours) Acceptable courses

include history, government, psychology, economics, western civilization, political science, women's studies, and anthropology.

e. Humanities and Fine Arts: (9 semester hours) Acceptable courses

include philosophy, ethics, public speaking, art, religion, music, drama, and foreign languages.

f. Electives: (to total 55 general education hours) Three courses (up to 7

semester hours) in physical education or skills courses such as studio art or music performance may be counted toward these elective credit requirements.

2. Completion of the prescribed course of study for the RN-BSN program as

listed in the Undergraduate Record with a final cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0. Students are responsible for ensuring that all courses are complete and included on their official University transcript.

3. Enrollment and payment of all required tuition and fees for no fewer than two

regular semesters or the equivalent.

Master of Science in Nursing Programs

Clinical Nurse Leader Tracks

For a full statement of the School of Nursing's Master's degree requirements, see the current Graduate Record. The basic requirements are:

1. completion of the prescribed course of study for the chosen clinical area of

concentration in the master's clinical nurse leader program as listed in the Graduate Record with final cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0. Students are responsible for ensuring that all courses are complete and included on their official University transcript; and

2. enrollment and payment of all required tuition and fees for no fewer than four

regular semesters or the equivalent.

Clinical Nurse Specialist Tracks

For a full statement of the School of Nursing's Master's degree requirements, see the current Graduate Record. The basic requirements are:

1. completion of the prescribed course of study for the chosen clinical area of

concentration in the master's clinical nurse specialist program (Acute and Specialty Care and Psychiatric-Mental Health) as listed in the Graduate Record with final cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0. Students are

responsible for ensuring that all courses are complete and included on their official University transcript; and

regular semesters or the equivalent.

Specialty Tracks (Health Systems Management or Community & Public Health Leadership)

For a full statement of the School of Nursing's Master's degree requirements, see the current Graduate Record. The basic requirements are:

1. completion of the prescribed course of study for the Health Systems

Management or Community & Public Health Leadership track as listed in the Graduate Record with final cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0. Students are responsible for ensuring that all courses are complete and included on their official University transcript; and

2. enrollment and payment of all required tuition and fees for no fewer than two

regular semesters or the equivalent.

MSN/MBA (in conjunction with the Darden School of Business)

For a full statement of the School of Nursing's Master's degree requirements, see the current Graduate Record. The basic requirements are:

1. completion of the prescribed course of study for the MSN/MBA program as

listed in the Graduate Record with final cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0. Students are responsible for ensuring that all courses are complete and included on their official University transcript; and

2. enrollment and payment of all required tuition and fees for no fewer than two

regular semesters or the equivalent.

Nurse Practitioner Tracks

1. completion of the prescribed course of study for the chosen clinical area of

concentration (Family Nurse Practitioner, Community & Public Health

Leadership/Family Nurse Practitioner, Psychiatric-Mental Health/Family Nurse Practitioner, Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Geriatric Nurse Practitioner) as listed in the Graduate Record with final cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0. Students are responsible for ensuring that all courses are complete and included on their official University transcript; and

2. enrollment and payment of all required tuition and fees for no fewer than two

regular semesters or the equivalent.

Post Master's Programs

1. completion of the prescribed course of study for the Post-Masters Program)
