SEMESTER – I PAPER – I

UNIT- I

Scientific method – its characteristics, purpose, assumption, Steps. Scientific method and social work research. Theory building in social research.

UNIT- II

Formulation of a research problem. Concepts, opreationalisation of concept. Variables, types of relationships among variables. Hypothesis – formulation, types – relational, working, test, null and alternate. Attributes of a sound hypothesis.

UNIT - III

Research designs - case study, exploratory, explanatory and experimental. Impact studies, cost – benefit studies, monitoring and evaluation. Evaluation of social work services – Measurement tools for Evaluation of social work programme and practice.

UNIT - IV

Sources of data - primary and secondary. Research tools - interview schedules, guides, questionnaires. Methods of data collection – observation and interview. Sampling – need. Types and procedures. Determination of sample size. Sampling error. Preparation of research proposal. Report writing.

UNIT - V

Use of statistics and their limitation. Levels of measurement – nominal, ordinal, interval and ratio. Measures of central tendency – mean, mode and median. Dispersion – range, mean deviation, standard deviation, quartile deviation. Correlation – product moment, Phi Coefficient, Yule‟s Q, Guttman‟s Lambda, Gamma, Spearman‟s Rho. Tests of significance, tests based on “t”, Z and Chi square. ANOVA, Regression. Introduction to computer. Data entry, Data procession and Data analysis. SPSS and its use.

The strengths approach to social work practice: Guidelines for strength assessment – assessment process: Defining the problem situation, Framework for assessment, the strength model – Approach with individual, group and community – Marxist perspective on social work.

Crisis Intervention – crisis and stress– techniques of crisis intervention – Bereavement of loss – A Frame work for understanding, coping with Catastrophe. -Phases – Issues – Holistic model /Eclectical approach –Benefits and techniques – sustainable approach – Application & limitations.

Models and Theories in Social Work: The problem solving model – Psycho-analytic model – Functional model – Behavior Modification Model – Task Centered case work model –– Therapeutic model –– cognitive-behavioral model –Change behaviors.

Human Rights : Concept and Historical Development, UN international Bill of Human Rights: Universal Declaration (1948), international convention on civil and political rights (1966), international convention on economic, social and cultural rights (1966), the optional protocol (1966), Promotion of international peace and security. Indian constitution: Preamble, declaration by government of India.

UNIT – II

Human Rights and Social Development : Fundamental Rights – Right to equality, Right to life and personal liberty and Right to freedom, Right against exploitation, Right to freedom of religion fundamental duties. Rights of vulnerable groups in Social Work perspectives: Right to child, woman, aged, victims of caste and communal conflicts, human rights for indigenous people with reference to intellectual properties, people living with disabilities, HIV/AIDS infected persons and HIV/AIDS patient‟s Right to marriage. UNIT – III

Human Rights and Criminal Justice : Criminal justice system, human rights in criminal justice administration, custodial death and violence – causes and cure, code of conduct for law enforcement officials, rights of prisoners, independence of judiciary.

Housing Rights: Human rights issue of pavement and slum dwellers, human rights violation in urban slums, access to shelter – a human rights perspective.

UNIT – IV

Human Rights Situation in India : Human Rights Commission in India: Administrative structure, functions and power, inquiry procedure and steps, investigations, State commissions and human rights courts. Illustrate cases on violation of human rights. Review of Protection of Human Rights Act 1993, Humanism of Periyar, Right Information Act.

UNIT – V

Social Work Profession and Human Rights Approach : Foundation of social work profession and major intervention strategies, challenging oppression, empowerment, strength perspectives, ethnic sensitive practice, cultural competence, mission of social work profession, Human Rights Issues: Ethical principle, ethical responsibilities. Socio Economic rights and need for social work intervention, Human rights priorities and practice for social worker.

Health complication of children. Nutritional problems, child maternal mortality and child welfare services in India. Role and Functions of World Health Organization.

UNIT – III

Medical Social Work – Present Trend in abroad and in India. Review of programmes related Role and Function of Medical Social Worker in Solving the psycho social problems of ill person in Hospital. Role of Hospital administration.

UNIT – IV

Psychiatry in India and abroad. International classifications of Mental illness – symptoms, etiology, diagnosis, prognosis management of disorders related to Neuroses and Psychosis – Therapeutic approaches and rehabilitation Methods.

UNIT – V

Symptoms, etiology, diagnosis, prognosis and management of Personality disorders – Somotoform disorders – Eating disorders Sleeping disorders and sexual disorders – Mentally challenged – epilepsy – treatment methods, physical, psychological, psycho – social – cultural belief and various community based rehabilitation methods – Role of Psychiatric Social Workers in dealing with Mentally ill patients. Review of Case studies relevant to the above cases.

UNIT –II:

National and international policies, conventions for children, Constitutional provisions. Development programmes provided by Government and Non- Governmental agencies. Legislation relating to children. Rights of the children.

UNIT -III:

Status of women. Demographic profile of women. Gender discrimination. Exploitation, trafficking of women. Maternal mortality and morbidity its causes. Illiteracy and unemployment problem among women. Women in organized and unorganized sectors. Women empowerment. Reservations for women. Women development initiates- constitutional and legislative provisions. National and International policies related to women. History, function of self help groups among women in Tamil Nadu.

UNIT – IV:

Women and Family. Family Management. Family life cycle and its various development stages, family disinteragation. Changing trend in family and its imopacts. Reviewing the related studies.

UNIT –V:

Population growth in India. Fertility, mortality, morbidity and migration. Population Distribution- Characteristics of India‟s population. Family planning and family welfare. Reproductive Health. Medical Termination of pregnancy Act, 1921. women, pregnancy and HIV/ AIDS. Reviewing research studies, records and other documents rwlatimg to population development. Nature and functions of organizations promoting research and development in the field of population growth.
