What is a vocational course?

On a vocational course everything you learn is directly related to your chosen career. The course, which may include work experience, will give you the opportunity to work on tasks as a member of a team. Your results are based much more on your coursework than on any examinations that you take. Employers, colleges and universities recognise vocational courses to be equivalent to academic courses.

Will a vocational course suit you?

Yes, if one or more of the following statements apply to you:

• You are reasonably certain of the career area that you wish to enter

• You enjoy applying your knowledge and solving problems

• You prefer coursework to examinations

• You want to concentrate on your favourite subject area

• You want some work experience within your course

• You enjoy working as part of a team

What are BTEC qualifications?

BTEC qualifications are suitable for a wide range of learners. They encourage and recognise achievement in learners, some of whom may not be getting the most out of ‘traditional’ academic study. Those who enjoy hands on, practical work with plenty of real life situations tend to find stimulation and success through BTEC qualifications.

Entry Level BTEC Diploma Variable GCSE equivalent

LEvEL 1 BTEC Diploma Variable GCSE equivalent

LEvEL 2 BTEC Diploma 4 GCSEs A* - C

LEvEL 3 BTEC Subsidiary Diploma 1 A Level *

LEvEL 3 BTEC Diploma 2 A Levels *

LEvEL 3 BTEC Extended Diploma 3 A Levels *

* Level 3 BTEC Diplomas qualify for UCAS points

Can I have additional support?

The College places a strong emphasis on support for learning. All new full-time students have an initial screening assessment, which helps gauge if learning support is required. We can then work with you and your tutors to devise a programme that is tailor-made to your needs. Our support can be provided in various ways. It can be done one to one, in class or via small groups. If specific support has already been identified by an outside agency we would normally try and ensure that it can be continued in much the same way. Learning support is normally available at every level of study.

Why do I need a police check?

It is likely that you will take part in structured work placements as part of your course. If your placement brings you into contact with children and / or vulnerable adults, we will have to complete a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check before your placement begins. You will have to provide certain documents and pay a fee of £44.00 as part of the CRB process. Full details can be found at www.gov.je.

How important are English and Mathematics?

Low skills levels in English and Mathematics have a profound effect on individuals, their families, on the economy and on society. The College offers support for its students to enable them to develop their English and Mathematics skills so that their everyday use of literacy and numeracy is a source of pride and not one of embarrassment. Every student will be enrolled on either a GCSE or Functional Skills programme of study if they have not already gained a grade C pass at GCSE.

Can I study for a degree?

Yes, over 150 students are currently working towards a degree programme at Highlands. Since 2004 Highlands College has been officially recognised as a Partner College of Plymouth University, giving us official status within the University with our own Board of Studies.

We currently offer the following full-time programmes: BA (Hons) Financial Services

BA (Hons) Business and Management

BSc (Hons) Information Technology for Business BA (Hons) Childhood Studies

BSc (Hons) Social Sciences

Foundation Degree Accounting and Finance Foundation Degree Sport and Management

(subject to approval by Plymouth University)

On a part-time basis we offer: Foundation Degree Art and Design BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology BSc (Hons) Construction Management

We currently offer the Plymouth validated Access to Higher Education Diploma for adults who need a qualification to enter higher education. This can lead to an on-Island degree course, Plymouth or other universities in the UK or Open University qualifications on Island.

The mission of the Plymouth University Partner Colleges is to provide “a degree on your doorstep”, and at Highlands College we have worked hard to make this a reality.

Am I guaranteed a place?

Having the correct entry criteria is not the only requirement for acceptance onto a course. You will need to be successful at interview and references will be taken up. You will also need to demonstrate a record of satisfactory attendance and participation. Due to the large number of applicants each year courses may become oversubscribed and places may not be available on your first choice course. We may have to place you on a waiting list. This does not, however, guarantee a place so you are advised to look at alternative courses at this time. We make every effort to place applicants on the course of their choice - so long as it is appropriate to their skills and ability. Occasionally courses may have to be cancelled and the College will do its best to suggest suitable alternatives.

The Apprentice

Jenny Caldeira has secured a hairdressing apprenticeship at Le Salon, following a successful

work placement with employer Justyn Thomas. This is exceptional, as Jenny is only 16 and

salons usually want their prospective staff to have some life experience before taking them

on as an apprentice. Jenny made the most of her time on the Highlands 14 -16 vocational

curriculum hairdressing course and has a promising future ahead of her.

Caring

Students

Raise Money

for Children’s

Cancer Charity

Second year students on the

Highlands College Level 3

BTEC Health and Social Care

course raised £800.00 for

the children’s cancer charity,

CLIC Sargent Jersey. They

organised two fund raising

events for the charity, which

provides monetary and

social support for families

of children undergoing

treatment for cancer.

The first event was a hair raising

experience for three of the

lads, who very bravely agreed

to subject themselves to the

torture of leg waxing, superbly

performed by the first year

beauty students. Curtis, Simon

and James were stoic and

fearless (well just about) as they

allowed their leg hair (and in

James’ case, chest and armpit

hair) to be ripped off in front of

their tutors, their peers and a

photographer from the JEP.

The group also staged a grand

Christmas raffle, with students

visiting shops and restaurants in

town, hassling their workplaces

and finding unwanted gifts

to use as raffle prizes. Their

persistence paid off and an

impressive array of prizes was

won by happy students and

tutors around College just in

time for Christmas.

The students also sold over

100 pink (glow in the dark)

armbands in aid of CLIC

Sargent. Very fetching they

looked too! Well done to all

Fashion First for Marianna

Marianna Amy, who completed her BTEC National

Diploma in Art and Design at Highlands College in

2010, is about to start her degree at the London

School of Fashion.

It is notoriously difficult to get into the London School

of Fashion and Marianna is the first Highlands

student to be offered a place there.

We wish Marianna the best of luck and hope to see

her designs on the catwalks in the future.

Joe is Top

of his League

Sports Studies student Joe Smith has

been accepted onto the football studies

course at Southampton Solent University

following a very successful time at

Highlands College. Joe started his

College studies at Level 1 and worked

his way through to Level 3. He excelled

in written work, achieving a distinction

in every one of his modules and ending

with a triple distinction star overall. Not

only did Joe work extremely hard at his

studies, he was also elected a College

be a spokesperson and to represent

them. This means participating in team

meetings and College wide events

as the voice of the students. Joe also

started a decorating business in his

spare time.

Inspired to Succeed

Emma Hunter is flying high with her learning in

childhood studies at Highlands. She came to

College from Haute Vallée School with GCSEs

from grade B to D. She had especially found her

Mathematics studies difficult and had gained a

grade E in this subject.

After three years of study at Highlands, which she

really enjoyed, Emma completed her CACHE

Diploma in Childcare and Education course –

equivalent to three A Levels. She also participated in

work experience with children aged 0 - 16 years at

Bel Royal School, Nestling Day Nursery and Jersey

College for Girls.

In addition she improved her Mathematics

qualifications, passed a St John’s Ambulance First

Aid qualification and gained certificates in food

hygiene and working with children with autism.

Emma has now been accepted onto the Highlands

New Skills Facilities Enhance Student Practice

Health and Social Care students at Highlands

College can now benefit from enhanced

facilities for their learning, thanks to the support

of Mercury Medical.

Following discussions between students, staff

and employers, it became clear that a bespoke

room was needed to allow students to have

some hands on experience of some of the

practical skills required in care sector work.

Mercury Medical stepped in with a long term

rental agreement for equipment that is now

located in a brand new open plan skills room,

which allows practical demonstrations and

assessment to take place on a regular basis.

Students will be able to learn aspects of

patient safety and experience prior to going

out on placement, including important skills

such as how to make a hospital bed, how to

communicate with a sick patient, how to handle

hoists and how to support an elderly patient to

get in and out of a chair. The room is divided by

perspex screens so that students can observe

practical work as well as participate in it.

The location of the room, close to stairs, a lift

and fire doors provides a realistic representation

of a care home environment where students can

practise their caring skills and experience the

issues around wheelchair access.

Health and Social Care students are the future

care workers, physiotherapists, nurses and

midwives of Jersey and will be working with

elderly people in residential homes, nursing

homes and in the community. This is especially

important as the population in Jersey lives longer.

part in some form of fund raising event. They

included sponsored walks, a car wash, cake

stalls, a charity bingo event and lots more.

Business, Sport and Travel and Tourism

students went on a four-day study trip to

London. The students had a great time in the

capital visiting the Olympic Park, Wembley,

the London Eye and Fullers Brewery, before

ending the trip with a day at Thorpe Park.

Travel and Tourism

students conducted

some market

research for the

Jersey War Tunnels

and Durrell Wildlife

Conservation Trust.

The Highlands College cricket team won the

schools cricket league. Howzat!

The BTEC Extended Diploma business

students took part in the Enhance Stock Market

Challenge sponsored by Quilter. Ten students

in two groups of five competed in the annual

investment challenge. The groups had a

fictional £1 million to invest in the stock market

over a period of six months. They competed

against other sixth form schools across the

island. Unfortunately the teams did not win

but all those who took part thoroughly enjoyed

the experience and were made more aware of

investing in the stock market.

Social Sciences can be defined as the study of

such as sociology, economics, social history,

criminology and public policy.

The BSc Social Sciences looks at aspects of

life that we care most about and the issues

that governments must face – from health,

education and crime to where our wealth comes

from and how we choose to spend it.

This traditional degree programme has been

designed to enable students to study and

interact. It will broaden your horizons and help you
