UPM + special sawn products are designed and manufactured for specific end use requirements, particularly in the joinery and furniture industries. The difference between special and standard sawn products is largely based on sawing and drying methods as well as length and grade selections. The UPM + range of products deliver clear savings in terms of material costs and handling.

UPM + Prime (UPM+P) products are especially developed for the joinery industry. The +P products are manufactured solely from selected Finnish redwood using the latest X-ray technology and specialised sawing techniques. The products are favoured by the window industry and staircase manufacturers in particular, although they are suited to a wide range of other end uses and are even used in lightweight aircraft structures.

UPM Timber products come from

WELL MANAGED FORESTS that:

• Preserve and promote biodiversity

• Store large amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide • Produce oxygen and filter air

• Help to control floods and produce clean surface water and groundwater • Provide people with berries, mushrooms and game, as well as timber

• Are the source of many renewable and recyclable commodities, such as timber, pulp, paper and energy

• Provide people with recreational opportunities and experiences.

Wood sourcing from certified forests

Forest certification is an excellent tool for promoting sustainable forestry. UPM Timber promotes all credible forest certification schemes, including the two major international schemes, FSC® and PEFC™.

All the raw material used by UPM Timber comes from responsibly managed forests.

We value the environment

From an environmental point of view, wood has unique, environmentally friendly properties. Forests absorb carbon dioxide and act as a significant carbon sink. Wooden products also store carbon. Wood is a recyclable and renewable material, and a source of environmentally friendly energy. UPM Timber is the industry leader in taking environmental issues into account and promoting ecological practices.

Carbon footprint as a good indicator

A carbon footprint can be used to quantify the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions caused during the lifecycle of a product. Timber products have a small carbon footprint because they store carbon. The carbon footprint of timber products is described using two different indicators. The biogenic carbon footprint of a product reveals how much carbon dioxide has been stored in the product. The fossil carbon footprint of a product refers to the emissions occurring during the product’s lifecycle.
