Research and Enterprise funded project
End of project report (Round 9)
Principal Investigator: Kristianne Drake
Project Title: The Photobook Show
Project ID: 818
One of the conditions of you receiving funding was that you archive the output(s)
arising from your project in the Institutional Repository, Solent Electronic
Archive (SEA). If you have not already done so, please archive your output(s)
now.
To archive in SEA, follow this link:
http://ssudl.solent.ac.uk/, then log in.
For further information on how to self-archive you may contact Margaret
Feetham on ext. 3220 or go to http://sea.solent.ac.uk
As specified in your letter of confirmation of funding, you are expected to
archive in SEA the output(s) arising from your project.
Outline all the deliverables that you intended to achieve as per your application and indicate if they were achieved or not, and if not, why not? Also copy the URL link to the repository where you have archived your output, where applicable.

Deliverable 1 This R&E project will enable SSU students on a range of courses to acquire professional experience by taking part in an open competition and exhibition based upon
Photobook production. It will also be an innovative way for them to gain professional experience as they will be encouraged to submit photobooks they have made in response to the open submission (this happens before every show) which will give them an equal opportunity to have a book in the show alongside the collection in its current form; currently the collection holds titles by Professor David Chandler and Professor John Kippin, Stuart Griffiths, Jason Evans, Harry Watts, Simon Norfolk, Weibke Leister, Ewen Spencer, Misha de Ridder and many more.
We had a high number of student and alumni work submitted and selected for the show. This included the winner and third place selections from the public vote that was held throughout the month the show was open.

Deliverable 2 Previous shows have seen the presence of Self Publish Be Happy’s Bruno Ceschel, graphic designer and creator of Oodee publishing house Damien Poulain, Harry Hardie from HERE books and the deputy editor at the BJP Diane Smyth amongst others. William and Kevin will also use their connections to promote the student choice as part of the promotion of the show giving the student chosen even wider exposure.
In addition to this there would be the opportunity for students in terms of professional networking and direct skills to learn/gain such as publishing, editorial,
sequencing, design and layout. This will happen both through the workshops being held and the competitive element of the submission call.

Deliverable 3 The Photobook Show has already been exhibited in
Brighton and London and will be shown again this year at the Brighton Biennale and then Helsinki, Finland gaining international momentum for the show.
Once Southampton Solent University has been a part of this unique way of sharing a photobook collection, the connection will remain as part of the show’s history and development, especially as it will be the first show to be held for more than a few days and will include for the first time workshops as well as the symposium. It will also be the first showing of the collection in 2013.
2013 saw The Photobook Show hold it’s first long run of one month in Southampton. For the first time the show held workshops that were free and open to the public. This followed the shows in 2012 in
Brighton (as part of the Brighton Photo Biennal) and Helsinki. The show is potentially going to Japan next and so we have become an important part in the history of The Photobook Show as has the work of our students and alumni that were selected for it.

Deliverable 4 As part of my own CPD I am considering the photobook as an area of specific research for a possible MPhil/PhD and this would be part of the contributory process to that research, specifically looking at how photobooks can be used both as a medium for fine art practices, design practices and for documentary purposes. This experience will be enhanced through having Guy Moreton as my mentor, bringing his considerable experience as both researcher and practitioner.

External
funding As a result of your completing this project will you apply for external funding? (Please delete as appropriate) NO
If NO: Please outline reasons
IF YES: Please let us know where you intend to apply for external funding.
This project has allowed me to work closely with a internationally recognised professionals and now I need to take up further discussions within my faculty at Solent to decide if they will allow me to take the idea of our own book
repository further.
Lessons Learned
Summarise the lessons learnt during the project: What went well and what you would do differently next time. Think about the project’s successes and areas which need to be improved and explain any recommendations you would have for future projects.
Overall the whole project was very successful and has received excellent feedback from all parties concerned.
The student submissions worked very well and that many were selected and went on to win accolades was an indictment of why we should have our own repository.
Benefits Please outline any personal, departmental and/or institutional benefits that have been achieved. You may wish to consider the following statements:
To provide pump-priming for new areas of applied research and research clusters which link with the institutional focus on the needs of employers;
To encourage more cross-disciplinary research;
To underpin the curriculum with research in new and developing subjects;
To generate additional knowledge for commercial exploitation by the Solent Centres;
To support bids for external funding;
To support a cross-institutional programme of research and enterprise seminars;
To provide mentoring of early career researchers by more experienced staff;
To increase the number of doctorates (included for the first time in the 2008 RAE), as well as the qualifications held by SSU staff.
The necessity for a repository of Solent student book work to be funded on a regular basis and maintained with consistency
The cross-disciplinary nature of the whole project encourages and supports the necessity of developing further research of this nature The self published/hand made photobook is currently an expanding area
within the arts and our connection to this through The Photobook Show now needs to be promoted and exploited further. We have already gained connections with 2 renowned small publishing companies who have been in to talk to students and we can develop this further and build on these experiences
Having opened up these collaborations we can now develop our
relationships and potential to work with these institutions further in the future
My experience being mentored throughout this project was invaluable. The support given to me by Guy Moreton to pursue this project (being only an associate lecturer but having worked at SSU for 6 years and never having had any research funding experience before) and to look to develop my own research and potentially take my qualifications to the next level was essential and also invaluable
Personally I hope to look at taking the next level of educational
