Common Core Standard: 1.OA.2 Solve word problems that call for addition of three whole numbers whose sum is less than

or equal to 20, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the

problem.

Essential Vocabulary

Great game with lots of different games you can play.

Rich Problems:

• The total of three numbers is ten. What might the three numbers be? (Lilburn and Ciurak, Investigations, Tasks and Rubrics to Teach and Assess Math, p 30)

• Emily tossed three six-sided dice and made a total of twelve. What number of dots might have been on each dice? (Lilburn and Ciurak, Investigations, Tasks and Rubrics to Teach and Assess Math,p 30) • How many

different ways can you get a total of thirteen when you toss three six-sided

dices? Record each way. (Lilburn and Ciurak, Investigations, Tasks and Rubrics to Teach and Assess Math,p 30)

Number Strings- Adapted from Minilessons for Math Practice (Bresser and holtzman, 2006)

1. Record a number string on the board for students to solve (ex. 5 + 2 + 5)

2. Allow a minute or so for students to solve the problem.

3. Elicit answers and strategies from a few volunteers and record students' strategies on the board.

4. Using a new number string, repeat steps 1-3, this time asking students to share their strategy with a partner before you lead a class discussion.

Key Questions

• What strategy did you use?

• Can you find any familiar number

combinations?

(6)

string? Rich Question

• ? + ? + ? = 13. What might the missing numbers be?

Journal Prompt:

A teacher turned over 3 dot cards and counted a total of 20 dots. The first card had 8 dots. How many dots did the other two cards have? Show as many different solutions as you can.

Cluster: Understand and apply properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Common Core Standard: 1.OA.3 Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract. Examples: If 8+3=11 is

known, then 3+8=11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.) To add 2+6+4, the second two numbers can be

added to make a ten, so 2+6+4 = 2+10=12. (Associative property of addition.)

I am always looking for fun, simple, interactive ways to do math with my kinders. I especially like activities that they can become independent at, but produce something so parents can see what we've been working and I can evaluate student progress. And, like my students, I am very tired of pages that require them to show what they know by coloring. COLORING IS

things, and by golly I am going to give them what they want! So my students learned how to decompose numbers in a hands-on experience with unifix cubes, and then continued to develop the concept using 1" squares of construction paper in a
