3. Vas Deferens – aka Sperm ducts – where sperm travels. At this point, it is only sperm – no fluid has been

mixed with it yet.

1. Testicle – produces Sperm. Men make millions

of sperm. 6. Urethra –how semen and urine leave the body.

2. Epididymis – where mature sperm will reside

until ejaculation 4. Seminal Vesicle-

produces Semen- the clear-ish to off whitish thick fluid released during

ejaculation. Semen has sugars (energy) and proteins (strength) for the

Sperm.

5. Prostate Gland – Where the Ureters, Vas Deferens, and Seminal Vesicle meet. Also produced fluid that will

neutralize the acidic environment of the vagina

so sperm can survive longer

Scrotum- Outer layer of skin that holds the testes Ureter- Tube that goes

from the kidneys to the bladder

2. Fallopian Tubes

once egg is mature, it leaves the ovary. It is now

called an OOCYTE. It travels through the fallopian tube. If there is a sperm, the

sperm and egg meet (conception) in the fallopian tube. The sperm penetrates

egg’s membrane (fertilization). The fertilized egg will travel down into the

uterus, where it will implant into the ENDOMETRIUM

5. Cervix –

during

childbirth, the cervix

dilates, which opens the

uterus to allow the baby to

exit the uterus

3. Endometrium

– Where lining (tissue) of the uterus accumulates

so when an oocyte has been fertilized, it can implant itself into the endometrium and grow

baby will leave the female

Female Menstruation -

Follicular

Phase

The first phase of female

menstruation

This phases takes about 10

days.

Follicles grow inside the

ovary. Inside the follicles

are the ova (egg)

In this phase, one egg

matures completely.

A female CAN get pregnant

(7)

The second phase of menstruation

This phase takes about 4 days

A female has now been in her menstrual cycle for

about 14 days.

The Follicle wall ruptures and the Egg (now oocyte)

is released and travels through the fallopian tubes.

If there is a sperm, it will meet the egg (conception)

in the fallopian tubes and penetrate the egg’s

membrane (fertilization).

The egg (or fertilized egg) travels through the

fallopian tubes and will travel into the uterus by the

end of this phase.

Endometrium lining thickens during these 4 days so

if the egg is fertilized, it can implant itself.

Because the egg is in the fallopian tube, where

conception and fertilization occur, these 4 days are

when a woman is MOST LIKELY to become pregnant.

Female Menstruation -

Ovulatory

(8)

Female Menstruation- Luteal

Phase:

The third phase of menstruation

This phase takes about 14 days

This phase is also known as “PMS” because these are the

14 days where a woman’s hormone fluctuation can cause

“Pre Menstrual Symptoms” (including: fatigue, mood

swings, back ache, stomach/ abdominal cramps, leg

pain, bloating, swollen breasts, headaches, etc)

A woman has now been in her cycle for 28 days.

Without Fertilization of the oocyte, the oocyte

‘ruptures/degenerates’.

Without Fertilization, a woman will enter the next cycle,

Menstruation. If the egg implanted into the

endometrium, a woman will not enter the next phase,

which is why women do not ‘get their periods’ while

pregnant.

(9)

Female Menstruation- Menstrual

Phase:

Without Fertilization, a woman will enter this fourth phase:

Menstruation.

This phase can take 3 to 7 days.

In this phase, the Endometrium Lining Sheds from the uterus

walls because it is not needed. The Endometrium is/was there

for implantation of a fertilized egg. If there is no fertilized egg,

there is no implantation.

Shedding of the lining is what people consider ‘a woman’s

period’

Although this is the fourth phase, and this phase can last up to

7 days, on day 1 of THIS phase, a woman will re-enter the

Follicular phase.

A woman will be in BOTH the fourth phase and first phase for

up to 7 days.

This is commonly thought to be the 1

st

phase because this is

the only phase that has visible evidence of the menstruation

cycle.

The very first time a female reaches her menstrual phase is

known as menarche.

Getting Pregnant -T or F

Below are common ‘sayings’ about a woman getting

pregnant. Some are true, some are false.

1. A girl cannot get pregnant until she starts having periods

FALSE!

What if she has not reached menarche but is in her first follicular phase?

2. A woman can get pregnant the first time she has sexual intercourse

TRUE

3. A woman can get pregnant without having sexual intercourse

TRUE -

Even without penetration, if the man’s sperm is close to the vagina or on

fingers near the vagina it is possible sperm can ‘swim’ to the woman’s uterus

(womb)

4. If a woman’s period is late, she must be pregnant

FALSE -

A woman’s cycle can vary a lot and is often

irregular

especially in young

women. A period may be late due to anything that could cause hormone

Getting Pregnant – T or F

Below are common ‘sayings’ about a

woman getting pregnant. Some are true,

some are false.

5. A woman cannot get pregnant if she has a bath or goes to the

bathroom after sex

FALSE -

A woman washing her EXTERNAL organs will do nothing to the

INTERNAL vaginal environment. The urethra has nothing to do with the

Vaginal canal

6.

A woman can get pregnant during her period

TRUE -

Although the period is one of the least fertile stages of the

menstrual cycle, sperm can live inside a woman’s body for up to 7 days

7. A woman cannot get pregnant if the man withdraws his penis

before ejaculation

FALSE -

Usually the liquid produced prior to ejaculation is from the
