PLEASE NOTE: DUE TO THE UPTICK IN CORONA VIRUS INFECTIONS, OUR JAN. 10 and FEB. 14 WORKSHOPS WILL BE VIRTUAL. We hope to return to in-person workshops thereafter.

WELCOME

Please welcome new member Ronald White, from Wethersfield. Ron is looking forward to participating in all of the club’s activities

.

JANUARY WORKSHOP (Virtual)

Our January 10 Workshop will be “Creating a Digital Slide Show” presented by Meredith Harris

Digital slide shows are a fun way to share photos. Whether you plan to participate in the Charter Oak mini- show presentations in May or just want to share images with family and friends, our January workshop will help you develop simple, but professional looking shows. Topics will include best practices to keep your audience engaged (regardless of software used), as well as how to use PowerPoint to create a slide show - with or without music.

FUTURE WORKSHOPS

February 14 Workshop - Post-processing in Photoshop

Steve Potashner is back with new topics. This year Steve will be demonstrating techniques to:

Change the background on your image

Use exposure blending to fix dynamic range issues

Get rid of those boring backgrounds and blown out highlights! Join us to learn new techniques or brush up your existing skills.

Share Your Favorite Places or Events to Photograph

For our April workshop, we invite members to talk about your favorite places or events to photograph.

Share a few images (maximum 6) and tell us about the place/event. Helpful information would include location, best time or season to photograph, website or contact information, special

equipment recommended (if any), and any other useful tips. Please sign up to present by March 1 by emailing [email protected]. Include the name of the place/event and your images. We

encourage places/events in the Northeastern U.S., but others will be allowed. Share your knowledge!

JANUARY COMPETITION (VIRTUAL)

Digital Competition Judging is scheduled for Monday, January 17. The deadline for submissions is January 10.

This month’s Specified Topic is “SHALLOW DEPTH OF FIELD”.

Monthly competitions are open to all, and we encourage all members, regardless of photographic experience, to participate.

SPECIFIED TOPICS FOR 2021-2022

Those who compete in the digital competitions know that one of the options for image submission is to place entries into the "Specified Topic" category. Each year, the Board chooses seven specified topics for the upcoming season. Here are this year’s upcoming Specified Topics.

 January: Shallow Depth of Field

 February: Architectural Details

 March: Patterns

 April: It’s All About The Light

CHARTER OAK ON INSTAGRAM

ATTENTION: Why not send your winning images to Charter Oak’s Instagram page?

Steve Silk is looking for content from members in order to continue refreshing the club’s presentation on our Instagram page. Many members have developed personal Instagram pages, following Steve’s

excellent tutorial workshops, Since Instagram is primarily a cellphone medium, vertical 4X5 format images work best, but horizontals, squares and all aspect ratios can be used. You can send your best images (with titles and/or brief text) to Steve at [email protected]. Title your email “Instafeed”.

COPS is on Instagram at charteroakphoto.org. Install the Instagram app to follow COPS photos and videos.

NOTE: Instagram provides COPS with a great platform for recruiting new members.

JANUARY PROGRAM (VIRTUAL)

Be sure to tune in to our January 24, 2022 Program. You don’t want to miss “The Challenges and Benefits of Winter Photography” by Henry Doyle.

Henry comes to us sponsored by our friends at Hunts Photo. Gary Farber will introduce Henry and give us some background on Henry and his work.

Winter can be a challenging but rewarding time of year in which to take photographs. In this presentation, Henry will go through some of the things you need to keep in mind when shooting in the winter: exposure, dealing with cold temperatures, and composition. Throughout this

presentation, Henry will also show some of his winter photos, and his thought process behind each shot.
