Dear Friends,

I have had the distinguished honor of teaching Fashion Design at The High School of Fashion Industries for the past thirteen years, and am proud to declare that it remains a haven which many of us call “a home away from home.”

This unique trade school in “the heart of Manhattan” has experienced an evolution of titles stemming from Central Needle Trade to vocational, and currently Career and Technical Education. Nevertheless, our dual focus studies continue to offer

enriching academics, as well as Fashion Design, Graphics Art and Illustration, Visual Merchandising and Fashion Marketing majors.

Our goal is to teach students to identify and solve real – world problems, give them an

interdisciplinary, team – oriented approach to challenges, and train them to use technology in these tasks.

Alumni, collectively we can help build resources to upgrade classroom technologies, and offer internships and college scholarships to graduating seniors. The words you share, time you render, generous contributions you make will shape the future of our students. We have the distinct

opportunity to create a legacy that will support our alma mater by building partnerships which can prepare students for college and to compete in the 21

st

century work force.

At HSFI, we are moving forward with new innovations and collaborations that will involve alumni, faculty, students, and parents.

With heartfelt thanks,

State of the School

Daryl Blank, Principal, High School of Fashion Industries

I am thrilled to be writing this state of the school summary for the High School of Fashion Industries Alumni Association. Even though I did not graduate from HSFI, I feel like my 17 years here at Fashion should qualify me for an honorary degree. I am very proud to be the Principal of this amazing school that is currently thriving and has a rich history.

I want to congratulate all High School of Fashion Industries alumni as we have earned an A grade on the New York City Progress Report for the sixth consecutive year. We received A grades in every category of the school report card including Student Progress; Student

Performance; School Environment; and College and Career Readiness. This impressive

accomplishment is a testament to both the past and present group of Fashion students. My roots at HSFI are being a history teacher so I know something about history repeating itself. It is clear that the dedicated work of HSFI alumni laid the foundation for these six consecutive ‘A’ grades.

Another tremendous development for the school is the state certification of all four of our major programs – Fashion Design; Graphics & Illustration; Visual Merchandising and Fashion Marketing. Presently, there are approximately 125 schools in New York City that offer over 300 Career and Technical Education programs. Sadly, only about 40 programs in the entire city are state certified and the High School of Fashion Industries has four of them. The certification process was a grueling ordeal, but the approval affirmed the fact that our programs are rigorous and of high quality.

As Principal, I have worked with the entire HSFI community to bring a Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS) to the school. Under this research proven system, HSFI students are rewarded for positive behavior with a monetary currency of Fashion Dollars. Students use these Fashion Dollars to purchase everything from school supplies to Fashion sweatshirts to the chance to shadow me as “Principal for a Day.” The school community has worked together to create a matrix of positive behaviors that serve as a value system. The HSFI community is focused on a commitment to Safety; Ownership; Achievement; Respect; and Responsibility. If you take the first letters of these five words, you get the word SOARR. SOARRing towards college and career readiness is what the High School of Fashion Industries is all about.

The High School of Fashion Industries Alumni Association means a great deal to me. I want HSFI alumni to share in the school’s current success because you made the school what it is today. I want HSFI alumni to feel that Fashion is their home away from home and you are always welcomed back. The teachers and supervisors might have changed, but the HSFI spirit remains as strong as ever!
