Mission Statement:

A Community empowered by God striving to make Jesus known, experienced, loved

and imitated.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

This week the priests of the diocese will join Bishop Bradley for our bi-annual convocation. The convocation provides the Bishop with an opportunity to pray with us. While not a retreat, we are getting away from our parochial responsibilities, even for just a few days.

Please pray for us and for the success of the convocation. There will be

communion services at 9:15am on Tuesday, October 20, Wednesday, October 21 and Thursday, October 22. In the event of an emergency, please call the parish number and follow the instructions.

Earlier this month, we offered our goodbyes and thanks to Fr. Stanley Witek. After three years, he has been assigned Administrator of St. Peter’s Church in Douglas. I am so grateful for Fr. Stan’s dedicated service in our parish, especially to the infirmed and the hospitalized. In addition to our parish, Fr. Stan was present to the Sisters at Nazareth, the Prayer Group on the First Thursdays, and the Neo-catechumens at the Cathedral. It’s always difficult to say goodbye. Please thank the Lord for Fr. Stan’s priestly ministry and his success in his new assignment. Again we say, “ dziękuję .”

Bishop Bradley has been so kind to assign Fr. Ben Huynh (pronounced win) to St. Catherine’s. Fr. Ben was ordained in 2013; he has served at St.

Thomas More Student parish and St. Joseph Church in Battle Creek. Fr. Ben is already familiar with our parish as he has helped with confessions and an occasional Mass here. Fr. Ben moved in two weeks ago and has entered into our parish life very quickly. Please welcome Fr. Ben to his new home. Chào mừng!

Welcome!

So the rectory remains at full capacity. Ryan Hoch continues his pastoral year keeping busy with liturgical matters. Fr. Dan continues his Wednesday evening classes as well as other pastoral duties. Let us continue our prayers for Fr. Dan and his family at the recent death of his dad, Mr. Roy Doctor. The funeral Mass for Mr. Doctor was October 8 in Coldwater. Eternal rest grant unto Roy, O Lord. May he rest in peace.

Soon I will depart for my pilgrimage to Fatima and Lourdes. It has been fifteen years since I last visited these beautiful Marian shrines. Each offers the pilgrim a wonderful insight into our Lady’s role in the Church. In 2017, Fatima will observe its 100th anniversary. As for Lourdes, I have made three pilgrimages there. I look forward to visiting the cave where our Lady appeared to St.

Bernadette in 1859. At each shrine and church, please know that I carry you in my prayers. Our last stop is Barcelona, Spain. It’s timely that as the Synod on the Family continues this month in Rome—our group can pray for all families to be HOLY like Jesus, Mary and Joseph.

Sincerely, Fr. Bob

New ADA Access

Thank you to the Knights of Columbus whose generosity funded the addition of ADA access to the west side doors. This gift will enable those who need such accessibility with easy access into our church and a shorter walking distance from the designated parking area.

Double your prayer power: Join the Choir! No experience necessary!

St. Augustine of Hippo is often quoted as having said “He who sings, prays twice.” That was the adage my grandfather used to encourage me to sing at Mass when I was just a child. I was also attracted to the idea that songs were prayers we can joyfully share with our voices.

While sitting in the congregation a few years back, I was encouraged by a couple members of the Choir to consider joining to learn more about music and singing in a group. I didn’t know how to read a note of music and my singing lessons had been limited to a nun and a pitch pipe. I was relieved when I contacted Mike Kiebel, Director of Music Ministry and the choir, and he assured me that no experience was necessary. I attended the next practice, where Mike put me through a simple scales test to see where I fit in, and I was singing in the alto section the following Sunday.

My biggest surprise about participating in choir is how much it has deepened my faith life. I look forward to the 1½ hour practices each Wednesday night, which gives me a chance, midweek, to share fellowship with my choir buddies and to begin preparing in a very thoughtful way for the coming Sunday’s

liturgy. And, as a person who has always attended Mass alone since my children became adults and moved away, I now have a caring, supportive “family” to sit with at Mass every week!

We are fortunate to have such a rich music ministry at St. Catherine’s. If you love to sing, consider sharing your gift with the parish by joining the choir!

We have a chair for you! In Choir Within!

Portage North Middle School Reading Enhancement Mentor Are you willing to listen to a youth reader? Did you struggle as a young reader? Do you love to read?

Reading builds a foundation for future successes, and Portage North Middle School is seeking volunteers to pair with one 6th, 7th, or 8th grade student for one hour weekly on Thursdays. Mentors will build rapport, listen to a student read a book of his/her choice, and guide a student to write 3-5 sentences about what he/she read that day in a staff supervised classroom.

Volunteer Hours on Thursdays 7:40 am-8:29 am

8:33 am-9:22 am 9:26 am-10:15 am 10:19 am-11:08 am 11:12 am-12:01 pm 12:35 pm-1:24 pm 1:28 pm-2:17 pm

Do you have more than an hour to offer to help build student reading successes? We would be glad to have you consider more options.

Are you unable to commit weekly, but usually have Thursdays open?

Signing up to be a substitute Mentor may be your way to assist our program.

Your positive attitude, life experience, and time would offer our students an opportunity to excel!

If you would like to help, please contact Jodi McIntyre at 323-5706 or jmcintyre@portageps.org.

Respect Life Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for the precious gift of life.

Help us to cherish and protect this gift, even in the midst of fear, pain, and suffering.

Give us love for all people, especially the most vulnerable, and help us bear witness to the truth that every life is worth living. Grant us the humility to accept help when we are in need, and teach us to be merciful to all. Through our words and actions, may others encounter the outstretched hands of Your mercy.

We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen
