SUPPORT THE COA LEVY

Friends, on May 4, the Van Wert County Council on Aging will have our two long term 5 year replacement levies on the ballot. These are the same levies based on the .25 and .20 millage the agency has received in past elections. We hope the voters of Van Wert County will support us in this endeavor.

The two levies provide the Council on Aging with approximately 65% of our operating funds and approximately 16% of the .20 mill levy goes to the Delphos Senior Citizen’s Center to assist Van Wert County residents who reside in Delphos. This number is based upon the population of individuals aged 60 and older that reside in the Delphos portion of Van Wert County. The replacement levy simply provides the COA levy funding based on current home assessments and on a $100,000 home the replacement levy would cost the home owner approximately $15.75. Across the State of Ohio, the Van Wert County Council on Aging has one of the lowest senior citizen levies per capita.

The remaining 35% of funding to operate the agency comes from private contributions and fundraising. The levies directly support the services we provide to older adults, with the largest services being the operation of the Senior Center and our transportation service. With the Council on Aging being a private charity, we do not receive any city, county, state or direct federal funding, which is why the levies are so critical for our agency to be able to operate and provide the services we do.

Currently, our agency does not charge for our services; however, those we serve are able to make a contribution which helps to offset our costs. Without the voter’s support of these levies, the potential exists where the COA might have to greatly reduce services or charge for the services we provide. This is certainly not something we would like to see happen and will need your support to insure the levies pass.

How can you help with this? Our friends can help in numerous ways. The greatest impact can be done by telling your friends, neighbors or anyone else you might run into to support our levy. As well, we are looking for individuals within the city and county that live in high visible areas that will allow us to put a levy sign in their yard. Our friends can also help us through monetary contributions that will be used to offset the actual costs incurred to be on the ballot. If interested in making a contribution, checks can be made payable to: VW COA Levy Committee or can be dropped off at the Council on Aging Senior Center. Every contribution makes the difference. For questions regarding contributions, please contact the COA or Don Hangartner, treasurer, COA Levy Committee.

Thank you for your support in this endeavor, Kevin Matthews

Director

Did you know: In 2020 with the Covid restrictions the Council on Aging averaged 51 transportation trips both in town and out of town per week to assist the senior citizens of Van Wert County plus an average of 120 consumer assistance calls over the phone.

COA Activity Changes due to COVID

Due to COVID –19 we have had to make adjustments for activities here at the COA. Clients must call to make a reservation for the activity they would like to participate in. Per the ODA, we are only allowed 10 participants per activity. The day of the activity you will receive a phone call from the COA to check on how you are feeling. While in the COA, you must wear a mask at all times, and keep socially distanced of 6 ft. apart. You will enter and exit thru the front door and upon arrival you will need to sign in, have your temperature taken and answer some basic health question. We are in this together and hopefully soon we can get back to the way things used to be. We thank you for your understanding of the current situation.

Transportation changes due to COVID 19 Due to the COVID 19 the COA has had to implement safety procedures to keep the client’s and driver’s safe during this trying time. All passengers must wear a mask at all times while in the vehicle and the driver will take your temperature prior to boarding the vehicle, along with sanitizer for your hands. All passengers will be contacted by the office prior to transportation to ensure you are not showing any signs of the COVID 19. All passengers must sit as far away as possible from the driver. In order to keep everyone safe you may be asked to go early, and may have to wait for a ride back home. The COA prides itself on the services we provide, but we must follow direction given by the Health Department and the Governor's office. We ask that you understand and please be considerate to all involved and together we will get through this.

Golden Buckeye Card

The Golden Buckeye program has been helping older Ohioans and other eligible adults make community connections for more than four decades. Nearly 2.5 million Ohioans are eligible for the Golden Buckeye Card. The program empowers older Ohioans and others to become active, loyal customers who seek value and reward quality.

Eligibility:

Ohioans age 60 or older; or

Ohio residents age 18-59 with a disability as defined by Social Security.

Your Golden Buckeye Card is non-transferrable. Only the person whose name is on the card is entitled to its benefits and discounts. Some merchants may ask for another form of identification when you present your card.

If you have a current Ohio Driver License or State ID card, you should automatically receive your Golden Buckeye card. Look for it during the month before your 60th birthday.

If don’t receive your card automatically, please call 1-866-301-6446 and select the option for a replacement card. Staff will check if you are in the database. If you are, you can request a card be sent to you. If you are not in the database you will need to apply for a Golden Buckeye card at a sign-up site.

These include most public libraries and senior centers. Call ahead before you go to make sure they are open and have applications on-hand.

The best way to use your Golden Buckeye Card is to ask. Some, but not all, participating merchants display the Golden Buckeye logo. Look for it on their door, in their window, or at the checkout. If they don’t have a logo posted, ask if they participate. Anytime and anywhere you spend money, ask if they accept the card or offer another discount for which you may qualify.
