Overview

• Summer schools range from 1 to 6 weeks

• Available to undergraduate students

• Different locations and subjects on offer

• Non-credit-bearing (cannot transfer credit)

Two formats

• In-person summer schools

• Online summer schools

Why summer schools?

• Gain international experience or develop remote working skills across time-zones:

• Broaden academic experience

• Collaborate with students and academics from around the world

• Think about future study/working abroad

• Learn something new

• Explore a new culture and language

In-person summer schools

• Eight partner university summer schools are currently being offered in-person.

• In-person summer schools are subject to change to an online format or cancellation at any time.

• The University of Nottingham will continue to review the

offer of all in-person summer schools in line with travel and international travel, border and quarantine restrictions up until 30 April 2022.

• Allocated students are advised not to arrange or pay for any non-refundable costs relating to their allocated summer

school up until this deadline and advised by the University of Nottingham.

In-person summer schools

Courses covering a wide range of subject areas

• The majority are open to students who have no previous experience in that subject

• Some courses require pre-knowledge

The majority offer cultural excursions as part of the programme:

• Some are included in the tuition fee waiver

• Some incur an additional cost

• Some summer schools reserve and guarantee accommodation

• Some summer schools don’t reserve accommodation but can assist summer school students with finding accommodation The majority of summer schools will include assessment as part of the programme and offer a transcript for completion:

Online summer schools

• Six partner university summer schools are currently being offered online

• Courses offered across a wide-range of subject areas: some require pre-knowledge, some no experience required

• Can participate from home

• Working remotely with students from around the world across multiple time-zones

• No international travel required

• Many partner universities offer online cultural activities alongside the academic programme

• Some assessment may be required and provide transcripts for completion

Application process How to apply

• Online application form available through the international summer schools webpage

• Read partner university profiles, FAQs and Conditions for applying section

• Choose a maximum of three summer schools in order of preference. You can apply for both online and in-person summer schools

• Universität Zürich is first choice only

• Some partners require you to select the subjects you wish to study, this will be indicated on the online

application

• Application deadline: 3pm, Friday 18 February 2022

Eligibility

Priority is given to students who:

• have not previously studied abroad, or who are not due to study abroad within their degree programme at Nottingham;

• are not in their final year, due to examination clashes

• do not have resit examinations unless otherwise stated

Students not in these categories are still eligible to apply and their applications will be considered.

What’s involved in the application?

• Students must achieve a minimum of 45% in academic average including autumn 2021 semester, visit the

Eligibility section on the webpage for full eligibility criteria

• Some partner university summer schools require you to have prior knowledge of a subject area or a minimum

number of years studying at undergraduate level. Check before applying.

• Students must research proposed partner university summer schools thoroughly and answer a personal

statement question on the online application (max. 800 words)

• The full personal statement question can be viewed in advance on the FAQs and Conditions for applying page

What’s involved in the application?

• It is not possible to save the application form part-way through, students are advised to prepare the personal statement question in advance before beginning the online application.

• Applications considered based on suitability, priority status, personal statement and academic performance (minimum 45% academic average to be considered)

• Universität Zürich: Students with a low household income as classified by UoN Financial Support as well as the two criteria above. Visit the partner profile page and FAQs for full eligibility criteria.

• For some partners, students from certain academic

schools/departments will be prioritised but all students can apply

• The application is considered by the University of

Nottingham selection committee only. Partner universities do not see internal applications

• Students will be informed of the application outcome by 5pm on Monday 14 March 2022

• You will need to confirm your acceptance by email no later than Monday 21 March 2022

• Once you have accepted your place, you will need to apply directly to the partner university.

• The University of Nottingham will nominate you to the

partner university so they know to expect your application We will nominate students in advance to partners with early application deadlines

Acceptance

• We will provide you with information regarding the application documents you are required to submit.

• Summer school offers are conditional: Partner universities have the right to reject your application

• Acceptance briefing is on Wednesday 16 March

• Pre-departure meeting for students allocated to an in- person summer school

• Students eligible to receive funding will have their funding paid by bank transfer to UK bank account

• Tuition waivers but most programmes still require you to cover the costs of accommodation, meals, travel and some activities. Check each programme.

Turing funding and eligibility

• Students successfully allocated to a partner university

summer school, which is a minimum of 28 days in duration are eligible to apply for Turing funding

• Online summer schools are not eligible for Turing funding or University of Nottingham summer school bursaries

• Aarhus Universitet – Students must be studying in both Term 1 and Term 2

• Korea University – Six-week programme only

• Linköpings Universitet

• Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen

• Yonsei University – Six-week programme only

Turing funding and eligibility

• Students apply for Turing funding after they have received notification of allocation to one of the eligible summer

schools

• Additional funding may be available for students who are categorized as widening participation within Turing’s WP eligibility criteria:

• Annual household income of £25,000 or below as confirmed by the University of Nottingham Financial Support

• Non-financial WP criteria

Successful summer school applicants who are awarded Turing funding are not eligible for any other summer school bursaries offered by the University of Nottingham

• Automatic awards of £1,000 for allocated students

• Not means-tested, automatically awarded if allocated

• Not eligible for Turing funding

Summer schools below 28 days in duration

• Awards of £300 for summer schools in Europe, for non-final year students. Students from low-income households and meet one or more of the University of Nottingham’s widening participation

criteria prioritised. A limited number of awards are available.

• Awards of £750 for summer schools outside of Europe (not

including Malaysia Campus), for non-final year students. Students from low-income households and meet one or more of the

University of Nottingham’s widening participation criteria prioritised.

Covid-19 and international travel

• Check in advance entry requirements for each country you are interested in applying to

• Check the host country’s requirements if you are

required to stop over in another country on the way to your destination

• Some countries will only allow entry or waive

quarantine to visitors who can prove they are fully vaccinated, usually a minimum of two vaccinations

but some countries may also require you to prove you have a booster vaccination

• Check what is accepted as proof of vaccination status

Covid-19 and international travel

• Countries may require Covid-19 tests prior to

departure from your home country, upon arrival at the airport, periodically throughout your time in the host country and prior to departure

• Check the requirements of your home country in order to return from your host country

• Check what insurance providers cover in relation to Covid-19; some countries require proof of insurance

• Prepare an emergency budget in case you are required to quarantine and remain in your host country for longer than expected due to a positive Covid-19 test

restrictions are subject to change at short notice

• Partner universities may change in-person summer schools to online at short notice

• Students are strongly advised not to arrange travel or make any non-refundable payments in relation to their allocated summer school in advance

• The University of Nottingham will review the offer of in-person partner university summer schools in line with travel and international travel, border and

quarantine restrictions up until 30 April 2022.

Covid-19 and international travel

• The University of Nottingham reserves the right to withdraw nominations of students allocated to in- person partner university summer schools if

international travel, border and quarantine restrictions contradict the university’s travel policy

• Students must read the university’s travel policy in advance of submitting a summer schools application to understand the risks and potential consequences of international travel.
