Friday, May 15, 1942 Carletonian: Ex-Journalist Clark to Seek Fortune

Dr. Keith Clark waxed philosophical and poetical about her resignation as associate professor of political science at Carleton: “Glad that I came, not sorry to depart,” said she, quoting Omar [Khayam]. Leaving Carleton after 19 years, Dr. Clark is filled with no nostalgia. World citizen, former newspaperwoman, and globe trotter, she has had too broad an experience to think that Carleton is the only beauty spot on earth. The only feminine Who’s Who-er at Carleton, Dr. Clark has a long series of accomplishments to her credit, among them, editorial and special writer for the St. Paul Dispatch-Pioneer Press, visiting professor at Kobe College, Nishinomiya, Japan; lecturer in Japanese cities; member of innumerable national associations; author of “The Spell of Spain,” “The Spell of Scotland,” and “International Communications,” and a member of the executive council of the American Political Science Association. But she’s setting out to seek her fortune like Dick Whittington and his cat. (by Jane Zimmerman)

Merrill E. (Casey) Jarchow became simultaneously associate professor of history and Associate Dean of Men. (Minnesota B.A., M.A., Ph.D. (1946-1986) (Minnesota Historical Society in 1949 published his The Earth Brought Forth, a history of agriculture in Minnesota during pioneer days. Dr. Jarchow made only occasional returns to classroom in the 1960s, and was Dean of Men for many years.

Carlton Chester Qualey, (St. Olaf B.A., Minnesota M.A., Columbia Ph.D.) (1946-70) came to College from position at Swarthmore. Of Norwegian descent, he possessed a lifelong interest in the history of immigrations, especially those from the north of Europe to the American Middle West. He was the author of Norwegian Settlement in the United States, published in 1938 by the Norwegian-American Historical Association, Northfield, Minnesota. Field: American History. Under his chairmanship, department moved toward a selective topical approach, steady increase in number of students majoring in history and continuing in graduate work.

Dr. Catherine Evangeline Boyd, (Radcliffe B.A., M.A., Ph.D.), and further study abroad. (1947-1966) Spent 19 years at Carleton, made special contribution in her courses in French and Italian history, in which she was an acknowledged authority. Her book, Tithes and Parishes in Medieval Italy: the Historical Roots of a Modern Problem (Cornell U. Press, 1952), won a coveted award from the American Historical Association. In 1966 Professor Boyd left Carleton to join the staff of the history department at the University of Wisconsin, Madison (?).
