out

the

punctured the

the

the

big men

For

years he was In

the cattle

business in

the

San

Pe-dro valley,

but

all live time looking for mineral. Finally he secured

the

abandoned Cananea raines from

the

widow ofthe former owner,

and

be-gan developing them. From a

cattle

liuncher to a

capital

puncher was

hut

a step for Greene, and hewas as

suc-cessful

at

one job as

at the other,

and he raised

the

money to build

the

smelter

at

Cananea. and made

it

one of the biggest copper producing camps

In

the

world.

At the

zenith of his prosperity hewas

credited with

being worth many millionsofdollars.

If

he had confined himself to

the

copper camp he probably .would have made

it

the

big success and he would have always been it. However he had more plans and schemes. He organized

the

Green Gold company,

the

Green Gold

& Silver comptny, and

the

numerous flotations offered

the sharks

on Wall

street

to many chances, and they final

ly got him.

The

gold company and

the

gold sliver company went flat, and he lost control of

the

copper com

that

he had stowed away enough to leave his family in comfortable circumstances.

The manager of

the

Lordsburg ball team learned

that

the Douglas ball players were going over to Demlng for a game

last

Sunday, and would pass

throught

here Saturday,

lie

hurrlbiy made arrangements to have them stop over between

trains

for a game Saturday afternoon, while the big crowd for

the

horse race was in town.

The

game

started out

with an exhibition of

butter

fingers on bot,h

sides, and In

the

early

part

of

the

game runs were made by both sides

that

were entirely owing to poor

playing.

After

a

little

both sides steadied down, and

the

rest of

the

game was good ball. For serveral Inning

the

score stood five to five,

and was

that

In

the last

half of the ninth, when Joe Nash came to bat. Joe Is handy with

the

stick, and madegood, finally came home on a

muffed fly, to

the great delight

of

the

crowd in

the

grand

stand, The

most notlcabie plays In

the

game was

the

throw ing to firstby

the

Douglas

pitch-er. He

caught

one or two of

the

Lordsburg players, who had made a lead, and they learned

It

was

not

safe to get

far

away from

the

base while he held

the

ball.

Not a

base was stolen on him.

The

Douglas

play-ers were afine

set

of fellows, and

the

Lordrburgers enjoy

their

visit. Sher-iff McCrath served as umpire.

The

advertised horse race Saturday afternoon, which followed

the

ball game was more of

a

procession

than

a

race.

Hall's

black horse, which had

won

everthlng

he had been up against, was the favorite with many, while

a

large number of people

thought It

was about

time

for him to be beaten, and placed

their

reli-anceon Gardner's sorrel. When

the

horses came up

the track with the

sorrel about a

leuth

in

the

lead, a man

sitting

In

the

grand

stand,

who had seen many horse races,

turned to

his

seatmate

and said;

"I

don't

know what

that

Is,

but It

Isa sure

thing

that

It is

not

a horse race."

The

crowd who wanted

to

see

the

sorrel win yelled

solustily

that

if

he ends and

froqt

of the grand

stand

had riot been open they would have lifted

the

roof. There is some

talk

of

matching

an

other

race between

the

two horses.
