number prefixes in a setting that allows children to transfer skills they learn in

class!

supplement your math lessons. Use Math Games whole class or at

a Math Game center and watch your test scores soar.

Easy Assembly:

. . . Assembly is easy!

Simply copy the bulletin board number prefix sheets onto colored paper. Copy the game board onto ledger size (11x17) paper. Glue it into a file folder or onto tag board. Copy the game cards. Cut the cards and laminate.

For the flash cards copy the word and the prefix definition cards back to back onto colored index paper and cut into cards.

For concentration games copy the prefixes and their definitions on colored construction or index paper. Cut into individual cards.

Keep the cards in a plastic baggie and store the game and cards together in a file folder or large manila envelope for easy storage. Use colored file folders to color code your Math Games

according to the math concept (Multiplication-red, Measurement-blue, Geometry-yellow).

Know Your Number Prefixes!

Students enjoy playing this number prefix math game! Watch how quickly your students master the meaning of number prefixes by playing this great game.

Play in groups of 2 to 4.

The objective is to be the first player to reach the finish line by answering all game cards about number prefixes correctly .

Shuffle the game cards and put them face down on the draw pile. Each student chooses a game piece. Use colored cubes for game pieces. Students roll a die to see who goes first. The highest number goes first. Play will go clockwise from the first player. The person on the player’s right chooses a card from the draw pile. That student reads the question on the card to the player. If the player answers the question correctly she gets to roll the die and move her game piece that number of spaces. If the player answers incorrectly, she loses a turn and play goes to the next player. Again the student on the player’s right chooses a card to read to the player. Play continues until the first person crosses the finish line.

This is a great game to play whole class. Everyone is practicing number prefixes! • flashcards

Students play in groups of 2 to 8.

The objective is to get the team leader back to the front of the line. Use the flashcards for this great game. Divide your class into 2 lines and name the first person of each line as the leader. A player from each line steps up and the teacher shows a flashcard with a prefix. The first student to give the definition of the prefix wins and goes to the end of their line. The next person in line goes up against the remaining student. The team that has the leader back to the front of the line wins! Send home the flashcards and watch your students practice in order to win tomorrow’s game.

The objective is to introduce and review math number prefixes.

Introduce each number prefix to your class using these blacklines made into a transparency. We recommend you introduce the prefixes that pertain to a number one at a time. After

introducing the prefix(es) display these sheets on the bulletin board for a quick daily review. As students are learning their number prefixes they can refer to these sheets when they are displayed in your room!

. . . . This old favorite keeps students multiplying while sharpening their memory skills. • concentration cards

Students play in small groups.

The objective is to be the player to collect the most cards.

Shuffle the word and prefix definition cards and lay them face down in rows. The first player chooses 2 cards at a time, looking for a word card and its prefix definition that’s a match. When a player chooses a matching set of cards, she/he collects the cards and takes another turn. If a student chooses 2 cards that don’t match it is the next person’s turn. The winner is the player with the most cards at the end of the game.

Send them home with your students to practice with mom and dad. This is a fun way to make sure your students are practicing math at home.

Use this great assessment with your students !

Make each student a copy of the Concentration Cards , words and definitions. Students cut them into individual cards and mix them up. Whole class have your students match up the word that goes with the definition. Walk through the room and note who is having difficulty and which students have it!
