APPLICATION TO APPLY FOR A LEVEL UPGRADE

CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION

PEI Teachers should use this Application Package when applying for an

Upgrade to their Certificate level.

GUIDELINES FOR APPLYING FOR AN UPGRADE IN

CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION LEVEL

Please read these instructions carefully before completing and submitting this application. WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR INITIATING AN UPGRADE IN CERTIFICATION?

It is the teacher’s responsibility to apply for a certification level upgrade and for providing the necessary information and documents required by Office of the Registrar as required under the School Act, Teacher Certification & Standards Regulations and Teacher Certification & Standards Board Policies.

WHEN DOES AN UPGRADE BECOME EFFECTIVE FOR SALARY PURPOSES?

A teacher whose credentials have been evaluated by the Registrar and who qualifies for a higher level of certification shall be entitled to the resulting pay increase effective from the date when all required documentation has been submitted to the Registrar. See Checklist below. .

HOW WILL I KNOW THAT MY UPGRADE HAS BEEN APPROVED?

Your new certificate will be mailed to you along with a School Board Report. A copy of the School Board Report indicating your new certificate level will be mailed to the School Board you request on the application form. Payroll uses the School Board Report to initiate your upgrade in salary.

HOW DO I INQUIRE ABOUT THE STATUS OF MY APPLICATION?

[*Technical Education must be in an area recognized by the provincially authorized curriculum. These are: automotive, welding, carpentry and cooking.]

A. PATHWAY FOR APPLICANTS WITH ONE FULL YEAR OF TECHNICAL EDUCATION*

[*Technical Education must be in an area recognized by the provincially authorized curriculum. These are: automotive, welding, carpentry and cooking.]

Career and Technical Education Bridging Certificate I

(May be held for maximum of 3 school years and may be renewed only twice.) .a grade twelve high school diploma or a verified equivalency

.a minimum of four (4) years work experience in the career and technical area being authorized

.a minimum of one (1) year technical education resulting in the completion of a program at a recognized post-secondary institution, in the career and technical area being authorized

.a recognized occupational certification such as an Interprovincial Red Seal in a career and technical area recognized by the Minister

.thirty-six (36) credit hours of teacher education, such as the Certificate in Adult Education (CAE) offered jointly by the University of Prince Edward Island and Holland College

...totalling PLAR 30 ch plus education 36 ch = 66 ch Career and Technical Education Bridging Certificate II

.all of the above plus an additional twenty-four (24) credit hours of approved post-secondary teacher education courses such as those offered through the Bachelor of Education in Human Resource Development degree offered jointly by the University of Prince Edward Island and Holland College or an equivalent recognized teacher education program including proof of completion of a degree in pre-service teacher education.

..totalling PLAR 30 ch plus education 36 ch + 24 = 90 ch Career and Technical Education Certificate III

.all of the above plus an additional thirty (30) semester hours of approved post-secondary education course credits beyond the Bachelor of Education degree and at the non-introductory level in a subject area related to the PEI school curriculum or in an area related to the teaching profession.

..totalling PLAR 30 ch plus education 36 + 24 + 30 ch = 120 ch Career and Technical Education Certificate IV

.all of the above plus an additional thirty (30) semester hours of approved post-secondary education course credits beyond the Bachelor of Education degree and at the non-introductory level in a subject area related to the PEI school curriculum or in an area related to the teaching profession related to the teaching profession

.an additional thirty (30) credit hours leading to the completion of a masters of education degree at a recognized post-secondary institution and will result in a minimum of one hundred and eighty (180) credit hours

..totalling PLAR 30 ch plus education 36 + 24 + 30 + 30 + 30 = 180 ch

B. PATHWAY FOR APPLICANTS WITH TWO FULL YEARS OR MORE OF TECHNICAL EDUCATION Career and Technical Education Bridging Certificate II

(May be held for maximum of 3 school years and may be renewed only twice.) .a grade twelve high school diploma or a verified equivalency

. a minimum of four (4) years work experience in the career and technical area being authorized

.a total of two (2) years of technical education resulting in the completion of a program in the area being authorized at a recognized post-secondary institution .a recognized occupational certification such as an Interprovincial Red Seal in the career and technical education area being authorized

.thirty-six (36) credit hours of teacher education, such as the Certificate in Adult Education (CAE) offered jointly by the University of Prince Edward Island and Holland College

...totalling PLAR 30 ch plus 30 additional CTE training + 36 ch in teacher = 96 ch Career and Technical Education Certificate III

.all of the above plus an additional thirty (30) semester hours of approved post-secondary education course credits beyond the Bachelor of Education degree and at the non-introductory level in a subject area related to the PEI school curriculum or in an area related to the teaching profession

...totalling PLAR 30 ch plus 30 additional CTE training + 36 + 24 ch in teacher education + 30 ch in education course work = 150 ch

Career and Technical Education Certificate V

.all of the above plus an additional thirty (30) credit hours leading to the completion of a masters of education degree at a recognized post-secondary institution and will result in a minimum of one hundred and eighty (180) credit

...totalling PLAR 30 ch plus 30 additional CTE training + 36 + 24 ch in teacher education + 30 + 30 ch in a masters degree program = 180 ch

WHAT SHOULD I INCLUDE WITH MY APPLICATION FOR AN UPGRADE?

. completed application form indicating the upgrade level sought and listing all of the courses you wish to have the Registrar consider for the upgrade and indicating to which school board or institution you wish to have information on the new certificate level sent

. a $50 application fee in the form of a cheque or money order made payable to the Minister of Finance. [A cash payment will be accepted at the Office of the Registrar.]

. an official transcript of your marks mailed directly to the Office of the Registrar at the address shown on the cover. Faxed transcripts will not be accepted.

. proof of completion of a degree program when applicable. When "degree awarded" is not stated on the transcript, the applicant may provide a photocopy of their degree. When an applicant completes the course work well in advance of graduation, they may request to have the university send a letter written by the Dean or by a university faculty member attesting they "have met all of requirements for the degree program and that they are eligible to graduate". This letter must be mailed directly to the Office of the Registrar. Faxed letters will not accepted.

Education.

2. Official transcript of marks sent directly from the university or the

educational institution. Do not e-mail, fax or hand-deliver transcripts.

3. Proof of degree attainment if applicable. (ie. Photocopy of degree attained,

letter from university confirming eligibility to graduate if not stated on

transcript.)
