• Valid passport or travel documents • Student visa

You have to present your student visa label to the Immigration Officer at the airport upon arrival.

• 2-3 photocopies of your travel documents

You must bring some photocopies for use in case you have lost the original one.

Welcome Party & Exchange Orientation 2015/16, Sem 1

All exchange students are required to participate in the mandatory orientation at 2:00 pm on 28 Aug 2015 (Fri) at Theatre Hall SHR-G30,Hung Hom Halls of Residence.

Departure Date

When you book your return ticket, please don't forget to take note of the examination period of Semester1.

Please go to IAO, at M1603, 16/F Li Ka Shing Tower (Core M), at 9:30-12:30 on 28Aug 2015 (Fri) for Causal Networking cum Registration.

Chinese Mainland Students:

Please go to CMAO, at R701, 7/F Shirley Chan Building (Core R), at9:30am-5:30pm (Lunch Break 1:00pm - 2:00pm)on24 Aug – 4Sep 2015 for registration.

• Credit cards

You should check with your bank whether your credit card can be used in HK ATM machine and whether there is exchange rate or additional charges in advance.

• First-aid medicine

Your medical records (if applicable), immunization records and academic records, if applicable.

• Documents with details of your insurance policy issued in your home country , if applicable. • Clothes

You can expect around 30-35 degree Celsius during summer; sunny, bright and cool weather during winter.

• Beddings

The Student Halls will only provide mattress but you can buy the bed sheet, pillow and quilt/ blanket easilyin the nearby markets of the Student Halls of Residence.

• Electronic devices and chargers • Travel adaptor

The standard electrical voltage is 220 volts and 3-pin plugs are used in Hong Kong. You are recommended to buy at least one travel adaptor before you come to HK that you may need to charge your phone before calling your parents upon arrival.

• 5-10 passport size photos

For yourapplication of the PolyU Student ID card, personalized Octopus Card with “student status”, etc.

Proof of permanent address of your hometown in Chinese / English to open a bank account

Mainland Students: Official Identity Card issued by Mainland China

International Students: Utility bill, mobile phone bill, bank statement, tax demand note, driver’s license with address or bank statement,etc. (The bill or bank statement should be within the latest two months.)

• Cash

You may need to use HK dollars as soon as you arrive at the airport. You are highly recommended to also bringsome cash that would be enough for the use of the first several weeks.

Arriving Hong Kong

1. Going to Hung Hom Halls of Student Residence

• Option 1 [By Bus and Taxi]

Take A21 bus and get off at MTR Hung Hom Station and then take a taxi at MTR Hung Hom Station.

Duration : Around 75 mins Costs : HK$33

Taxi:

Duration : Around 5 mins

Costs : Around HK$25-30, plus HK$5 per piece of luggage

• Option 2 [By Bus and On Foot]

Take A21 bus and get off at MTR Hung Hom Station, find Exit B in MTR Hung Hom Station and follow Exit B1 to a footbridge via Royal Peninsula to Hung Hom Halls.

Bus A21:

Duration : Around 75 mins Costs : HK$33

On Foot:

Duration : Around 10 mins

• Option 3 [By Airport Express and Taxi]

Take the Airport Express and get off at MTR Kowloon Station, and then take a taxi from MTR Kowloon Station to Hung Hom Halls.

Airport Express:

Duration: Around 30 mins Costs: HK$90

Taxi:

Duration : Around 10 mins

Costs : Around HK$50, plus HK$5 per piece of luggage

• Option 4 [By Taxi]

It is the fastest and the most expensive way to get to Hung Hom Hall. Simply show the address to taxi driver. Duration : Around 45 mins

Costs : Around HK$250-300, plus HK$5 per piece of luggage

From MTR Hung Hom Station

• Option 1 [By Taxi]

Take a taxi at MTR Hung Hom Station. Duration : Around 10 mins

Costs : Around HK$25-30, plus HK$5 per piece of luggage

• Option 2 [On Foot]

1) Find Exit B at in MTR Hung Hom Station

2) Follow Exit B1 to a footbridge via Royal Peninsula to Hung Hom Halls 3) Cross the footbridge at Fat Kwong Street to the other side

Pre-paid SIM card

You can simply get a pre-paid SIM card at any convenient store such as 7-Eleven and Circle K. It would be better to buy a pre-paid SIM card at the Airport.

You may also consider subscribing monthly calling plan from telecom service provider.

Octopus Card

It is really convenient to use Octopus card for transportation, transaction at supermarkets, convenient stores and vending machines in Hong Kong. You are highly recommended to buy one at the airport. If you are a full-time student of 25 years old or below, you may apply for a personalized Octopus card with “student status”. Application form will be ready in the MTR website from early September.

Documents** for opening a bank account in Hong Kong:

1. Passport / Travel document(s), (e.g. Chinese Travel Permit for Mainland Students) 2. Proof of Permanent Address of your hometown in English

3. Proof of PolyU student identity (e.g. student ID card or Notice of Offer) 4. Proof of Hong Kong residential address in English

5. Contact phone number in Hong Kong & e-mail address

For those residing at Student Halls, item 4 will be prepared for you by the Hall Management Section (HMS) and distributed to you when you check-in at the PolyU Student Halls of Residence.

* Information from Hang Seng Bank (PolyU branch) for your convenience. Other banks may require different documents.

3. Bank Account Opening

Note for age under 18:

A new policy on the arrangement of opening bank account at local banks for people under age of 18 (minors) has been imposed by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA). Minors are required to be accompanied by parent/guardian when opening a bank account. Parent/guardian will be requested to sign a declaration and provide a copy of HKID card/passport/other documents if necessary. For details, please check with the local banks directly.

Note to exchange students:

According to the policy of Hang Seng Bank (PolyU branch), a monthly service fee of HK$60 will be charged if the total relationship balance* is below HK$10,000 for “integrated Account”. Besides, a handling fee of HK $200 will be charged if the bank account is closed within three months from the date of account opening. * Kindly visit the website of Hang Seng Bank for details:
